“My purpose in painting is to evoke a feel of nostalgia – of simpler times and pleasures from the harmonizing chords of color. I try to turn my subject matter into a fantasyland of pleasing color, while balancing the horizontal and vertical plans of the canvas with a personal method of ‘characterizing.’” You can check out more of his work at http://fineartamerica.com/profiles/nicholas-martori.html

For 25 years, Lynn published the monthly country newspaper “Backroads” from her home in Love, Virginia. Now she brings together some of the best stories, recipes, and photos for her new book. As bestselling author Brad Herzog writes, “Backroads is a treasure trove of mountain lore, mountain humor, mountain history, mountain interests, and mountain concerns. But mostly, it is a loving account of mountain people.” Bestselling authors Jan Karon (of the Mitford novels) and Earl Hamner (of The Waltons) have also added their voices to the chorus of rave reviews for Lynn’s work.

Stone Soup Music – Southwater

0

Event Image
Southwater, a collective of bluegrass and acoustic musicians, encompasses a love of bluegrass, old time, country, jazz, blues and other musical traditions. As a result, Southwater’s music stands at the crossroads of the old and the new, the traditional and the progressive. Consistent within the performances is harmony singing, improvising and a “ragged but right” approach that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

A Windy Day, But No Chance For Snow …At Least For A Few Days! : 2.11.10

It has been an incredible winter so far, and finally it appears we have a break for at least a few days, from snow that is! High winds will continue to kick up Thursday, but not as bad as they were on Wednesday.

Wednesday started out messy with accidents everywhere including a turkey truck that blocked much of 151 for a big part of the day in the vicinity of Bland Wade Road.

For the 9th day in a row, Nelson County Public Schools are also closed again today due to snow.

High winds also knocked out power last night to Wintergreen Resort and residents living on the top of the mountain. People living in Schuyler also had their power knocked out as well. Numerous trees and limbs were blown across roads across the county as well. By roughly midnight, power was back on in both of those locations. As of this morning according to CVEC, “there are 184 CVEC members affected by outages caused by the weekend winter storm. These are located predominantly in Fluvanna and Louisa Counties as well as a few in northern Cumberland and Buckingham counties, all areas that suffered widespead and significant damage. This area saw numerous downed trees, broken poles and wire on the ground. The remaining damage has been every bit as challenging as the damage that kept hundreds and thousands without power earlier in the restoration process. CVEC, with the assistance of reinforcement crews from Southside Virginia Electric Cooperative will be working to resolve the remaining issues and restore power to small clusters of homes and individuals in those areas.”

Thursday will still be a breezy day, but winds will begin dying down by Friday.

There is another chance for a wintry mix entering the forecast by as early as the overnight hours Sunday, but at this time, it does not appear major.

Enjoy the sunshine, even if it’s cold sunshine!

Power Outage Up At Wintergreen Tonight : 2.2.10 : Restored by Midnight

Wintergreen
Nelson County, Virginia

Updated 8:30 PM:
Verbatim from CVEC:

CVEC offers the following updates on power restoration efforts from the weekend winter storm as well as an update from outages that occurred today.

CVEC is completing power restoration for small neighborhood outages and individual outages in a number of substation areas. The heaviest concentration of these remaining outages are in Fluvanna and Louisa counties. The Co-op advises members to remain as patient as possible. You may see your neighbors lights return and find that your are still without power. If that occurs, you should call CVEC to confirm that you are still on our outage list, but understand that dedicated crews are working to restore service to individual homes and businesses that need specific attention, along with crews that are restoring service at the neighborhood level.

New outages arrived on the system today with heavy winds that knocked down trees in western Albemarle and Nelson counties. A 46 kV transmission line was knocked out of service when a tree fell along the steep terrain and broke a transmission line pole feeding power to two substations at Wintergreen Resort. Crews are in the process of repairing the pole. More than 2000 meters are without service on the mountain. Given the specific nature of the damage, CVEC was able to estimate a repair time of 2 AM on February 11.

Problems have arisen at the Schuyler substation that serves more than 500 CVEC members. CVEC is working with the transmission company to investigate low voltage conditions. Look for additional information as it becomes available.

The Whitehall substation and Red Hill substation also had additional power outages of almost 200 members each.

Update: 7:55 PM
CVEC: “CVEC personnel have located a broken pole on the transmission line right-of-way. The repair crews have a temporary pole on site and plan to replace the broken pole. Power restoration time is estimated at 6 hours.”

Original Post
Within the past couple of hours many people up top at Wintergreen including the resort itself, lost electrical power. The cause is most likely related to the extremely high winds blowing here in Nelson. A minimum 45 MPH wind gust has already been recorded at our NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation station @ 3500 feet on Devils Knob.

“CVEC has two substations without power on Wintergreen Mountain, affecting about 2061 services. The problem appears to be along a 46 kV transmission line that feeds power through the Martins Store substation, directly to the Mountain Resort. The Co-op has people at the switching controls in the Martins Store substation and in the transmission line right-of-way,” Greg Kelly, Member Services & Business Development Director for CVEC tells NCL tonight.

The problem appears to be a major broken pole in the Rodes Farm area of Stoney Creek in the valley.

As NCL was the first to tell you, Route 151 just north of Bland Wade Road was down to one lane for a big part of Wednesday. For the second time in less than two months a semi tractor trailer rig used for hauling turkeys and chickens wrecked in almost exactly the same location.

The semi operated by Circle S Ranch in Monroe, N.C jackknifed across across Route 151 Wednesday. Hundreds of turkeys were thrown off the trailer during the wreck with many injured or killed.

On December 19th of 2009, another tractor trailer used for hauling poultry and using Route 151 as a cut through between I-64 and US 29 jackknifed in almost the same location blocking the road and stranding over 400 drivers on their way home in a snow storm and sub freezing temps. Cars were backed all the way up to Rockfish Gap at one point that night while crews worked to clear the road. Drivers finally were able to make it home shortly after midnight.

According Nelson Emergency Service Coordinator, Ray Uttaro, the driver hit an area of black ice and lost control. At the time of the accident, interstates and local roads in Nelson were in very hazardous condition.

The road was completely reopened for normal traffic around 3PM Wednesday afternoon.
