“The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office is investigating a fatal fire in Augusta County.
Augusta County officials were notified at approximately 2:20 a.m. Thursday (Jan. 27) of a residence on fire in the 700 block of Purple Cow Road.
After the fire was extinguished, fire crews recovered a deceased adult female and a deceased male juvenile inside the residence. Both bodies have been transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Roanoke for examination and autopsy.
An adult male was flown to VCU Medical Center in Richmond for treatment of life-threatening injuries sustained in the fire.

During the current winter storm impacting the Commonwealth, Virginia State Police troopers have responded to 142 traffic crashes and 162 disabled vehicles since 12:01 a.m. Sunday (Jan. 16) through 12:45 p.m. Sunday (Jan. 16). The majority of those crashes have involved only damage to vehicles. There have been no reported traffic fatalities during this time period.

Since midnight on Sunday (Jan. 16), Virginia State Police have responded to:
Salem Division: 29 Disabled Vehicles & 32 Traffic Crashes
Virginia State Police remain on the scene of a multi-vehicle backup on Interstate 81 in Roanoke County. At approximately 12:05 p.m. Sunday, a tractor-trailer jackknifed and the cab disconnected from the trailer in the northbound lanes of I-81 at the 134 mile marker. A wrecker is on scene working to get the tractor-trailer re-connected, so the northbound lanes can be cleared and traffic can begin moving again. However, in the backup of traffic, there are two additional reported traffic crashes – one with minor injuries reported and the other with no reported injuries. Fire and EMS have responded to the scene. Please follow 511 Salem for information on the detour. PHOTOS attached.
As the storm continues to cross the state, Virginians are still advised to avoid travel Sunday and overnight into Monday…especially along the Interstate 81 corridor. Open highways allow VDOT crews to safely and effectively treat the roads.
If you MUST travel during the storm, please take these safety tips into consideration:
· Know Before You Go! Before heading out, check Virginia road conditions at www.511virginia.org or download the VDOT 511 app. Do not call 911 or #77 for road conditions. Please leave these emergency lines open for emergencies only.
· Clear ALL snow and ice from the roof, trunk, hood and windows of your vehicle – car, SUV, minivan, pickup truck, commercial vehicle – before you travel.
· Use your headlights – in rain and snow. Virginia law requires headlights on when your wipers are active.
· Drive for conditions – slow your speed and increase your traveling distance between the vehicle ahead of you.
· Always buckle up.
· Avoid distractions – put down the phone.
· As the storm moves through the state, there will be an increased chance of encountering emergency vehicles assisting motorists. If it is safe to do so, carefully move over and give these responders plenty of room to safely work.

A wind driven snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain falls in Roseland, Virginia of Nelson County. Sunday afternoon – January 16, 2022.
From VDOT Lynchburg, 4:10 PM
VDOT ROAD CREWS FACE CHALLENGING CONDITIONS
Falling snow has turned to sleet and ice in many areas in the Lynchburg District
Lynchburg, Va. – In many areas within VDOT’s Lynchburg District, the steady snowfall has turned to sleet. Ice on the roadways is now a major concern. VDOT continues to urge motorists to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. The storm is expected to leave the Lynchburg District area between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., meaning we still have several hours of precipitation yet to come.
VDOT crews have been plowing roads all day and will continue until all roads are passable. Crews are first treating primary roads before moving on to secondary roads. Looking ahead, ice-covered roadways are a threat overnight and into tomorrow, as there is a risk of refreeze on the roadways.
Keep in mind, due to the colder temperatures we are seeing now, this storm is different from the storm we faced on Jan 3. It may take crews more time and effort to clear the roads this time around.
Those who must travel should maintain a safe speed, increase following distance and visit 511virginia.org to check conditions before driving. Motorists are advised to have an emergency kit inside their vehicle with things like food and water, blankets, hats and gloves, jumper cables, a flashlight and batteries and a working cell phone.
VDOT’s Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day to answer questions and take reports of roadway hazards. Call 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or contact us online at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov

Lynchburg, Va. – VDOT continue to monitor the latest weather forecasts. The latest information suggests a shift in snow totals and ice accumulation. While maximum snow amounts are trending downward, the amount of ice and freezing rain to hit our region is going up.
“It is recommended that motorists stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary,” said Gerry Harter, District Maintenance Engineer. “As bad as snow is on the roads, ice is much worse as far as impacts to traction are concerned. Our crews are ready and waiting. This storm is expected to bring us snow, sleet and freezing rain, so our response will change along with conditions.”
In addition to heavy snow and icy conditions, the forecast is now calling for even stronger winds, particularly Sunday night into Monday morning. That means downed trees and power lines and power outages are major concerns. VDOT urges the public to complete preparations for the storm now and plan to wait the storm out safely indoors.
Those who must be on the road during the storm should maintain a safe speed, increase following distance and visit 511virginia.org to check conditions before travel. To view VDOT plow locations once plowing operations have begun, visit vdotplows.org

From Virginia State Police: “As many are making plans now for what they’ll do over the long weekend, the Virginia State Police is advising everyone to be weather aware and factor in how the pending winter storm can/will impact those travel plans.
As of today, the weather forecasts have all regions of Virginia being affected by varying combinations of precipitation starting late Saturday, Jan. 15, and continuing through Sunday, Jan. 16. This winter storm system is also expected to impact much of the East Coast, especially along the I-95 corridor – for those who may be traveling out of or returning to Virginia over the weekend.
For the latest on this weather system and to help Virginians plan ahead, please visit any one of the following National Weather Service websites:
The Virginia State Police is currently preparing for this latest round of winter weather and will have all available troopers on patrol in order to respond as quickly as possible to traffic crashes, emergencies and disabled motorists.

From VDOT Culpeper Division:
“MAKE PREPARATIONS NOW FOR FORECAST WINTER WEATHER
Another major winter storm expected to impact travel across Va. beginning Sunday morning
CULPEPER — Crews in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Culpeper District are closely monitoring weather forecasts and preparing for another major winter storm that is expected to arrive early Sunday and drop a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain on Piedmont Virginia through the day. Similar conditions are expected across most of the Commonwealth.
Crews are pretreating Interstate 64, I-66 and major highways across the district today with a brine solution that will help melt precipitation as it begins. Drivers across Virginia will see similar pretreatment all day today and should give the brine trucks and escort vehicles plenty of room to work.
VDOT urges the public to complete preparations for the storm today and tomorrow so they do not have to travel during the storm. For those who must travel during winter weather, be prepared with essential items, including:
Keep at last a half-tank of fuel in the vehicle
Keep a blanket in the vehicle
Keep winter clothing in the vehicle: Winter coat, heavy shoes or boots, gloves and a hat
A snow shovel and a bag of sand or cat litter
Jumper cables, a flashlight and batteries, ice scraper, phone charger and map (in case your phone battery goes dead)
Non-perishable snacks and water
Those who must be on the road during the storm should reduce speed, increase following distance and use VDOT’s free 511 tools to find out about road conditions along the route.
VDOT crews will report to work Sunday morning to complete preparations. Once precipitation begins falling, VDOT snowplow operators and contract crews will treat roads with salt and sand to aid melting and improve traction. If snow accumulates to about two inches, the plows will push the snow off the roadways. Crews will work around the clock to clear roads, beginning with interstates and primary highways, then shifting to secondary roads and neighborhoods once the main roads are passable.
VDOT’s Customer Service Center is open 24 hours a day to answer questions and take reports of roadway hazards. Call 1-800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623) or contact us online at https://my.vdot.virginia.gov.

Power crews continue working long hours to get the lights back on for people living in the Central Virginia Blue Ridge.
As of 7:30 AM Wednesday morning (January 5th) just under 14,000 people were still without power on the CVEC system across the area. The task of restoring power has been a tough one since ice and snow still cover the ground making it very difficult to get into many of the remote areas where trees are across power lines or broken poles.

From VDOT Lynchburg:
Lynchburg, Va. – Many areas have received multiple inches of snowfall and snow continues to come down at a quick pace, with many areas seeing snowfall rates at greater than one inch per hour. We continue to experience strong winds and receive reports of downed trees on roadways and vehicles in ditches.
Snow plowing continues but with the rapid rate of snowfall, cleared roads are becoming snow-covered again quickly. Visit 511virginia.org or call 511 for up-to-date information on road and traffic conditions.
The storm is expected to move out of the Lynchburg District early this afternoon. There is a risk of re-freezing on roadways this evening and overnight, beginning anywhere from 4 to 7 p.m., depending on elevation and local temperature variances. Drivers are asked to avoid driving if possible and be extra careful when on the roads, watch out for slick and icy spots and give themselves extra time to arrive at their destination.

“HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS THROUGHOUT THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY ON MONDAY
STAUNTON – (11 a.m.) The first major storm of the winter season has brought 2 to 10 inches of snow as of mid-day Monday in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. Snowfall is expected to taper off Monday afternoon, but many roadways are snow-covered and slippery.

Interstate 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.
Interstate 81 – Moderate conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta and Shenandoah counties. Minor conditions in Rockingham and Frederick counties.
