As the days march toward summer more and more farm markets open up for the season. This past weekend Saunders Brothers Farm Market opened. The weather was perfect, a bit windy, but otherwise great!

One of the favorites at Saunders has to be the ice cream! People line up to get some this past Saturday.

We start this week a bit cool, even some scattered frost overnight in places. We dropped a cold night time low of 31.8° at our Devil’s Knob station. Down here in the Rockfish Valley we skirted freezing, only missed it (technically) by a tiny bit. 32.7° the overnight low here at NCL in Greenfield. But we will warm up with showers by Tuesday afternoon and even thunderstorms by Wednesday with temps nearing 80°

The farm market opens in May and continues operating until the end of the fruit growing season in the late fall.

A mother was killed late Thursday night and her 9-10 month old infant remains in the hospital after a tragic crash just west of Shipman. Another passenger remains in critical condition. Nelson County Sheriff, David Brooks, tells NCL that Mary Beth Sprouse, in her early 20’s, of Shipman was killed when she lost control of the car she was driving. “The crash happened around 10:30 Thursday night. 17 year old Nick Wright of the Phoenix area of Nelson was also injured,” says Sheriff Brooks. Mary Sprouse was the driver.

“The 9 to 10 month old infant received a skull fracture and injuries to the spine, but should make a good recovery, according to medical reports,” continued Sheriff Brooks.

The infant was in a car seat but had to be cut out of the car for rescue. Helicopter Medivac units helped transport the injured from the scene.

NBC29 in Charlottesville has more from the scene by clicking here.

Another Nelson County resident was killed during the early morning hours the next day in an unrelated crash. 39-year-old Nikki Renee Patterson of Afton, was killed along Plank Road in Albemarle County around 5AM Friday. NBC-29 has the details of that crash here.

A picture is worth a thousand words. The sky above Seaman’s Strawberry Patch in Roseland says it all. Look for those sunny skies to continue as we end the week heading into Mother’s Day Weekend. Temps will still be warm on Friday but cool to the 70’s Saturday and then 60’s for afternoon high’s by Sunday.

There’s a chance for a hit and miss thunderstorm Saturday, but most people won’t see any precipitation.
