We first told you about Michael Zuckerman’s plans to head for the sunset back in our August 2010 printed edition of Nelson County Life Magazine. Photographer, Hayley Osborne, took a stroll down memory lane with Michael back in the waning days of summer as he was preparing to retire from nearly 3 decades of service with Wintergreen Adaptive Sports.

Michael Zuckerman in our August 2010 spread shot by photographer Hayley Osborne and written by Jennie Tal Williams.

A few days before Christmas 2010, friends and colleagues got together with Michael to bid him farewell after nearly 30 years on the slopes as director, helping disabled people ski. Eventually the program turned into an all encompassing one including all kinds of sports, not just skiing.

Molly Brown (right) express her gratitude to Michael for his inspiration during his time as WAS director. Molly has become a champion skier in the WAS program and was the cover for our Jan 2008 edition.

Michael says he’ll be spending lots of time snorkeling in the Caribbean and doing gardening at his house in Afton!

Congrats Michael and enjoy your retirement!

No Big Snow. Still Made For Pretty Christmas

Photo By Paul Purpura : ©2010 www.nelsoncountylife.com : Nope it's not Nelson, this is what Nelson was supposed to get. This is about 3 hours east at Virginia Beach where NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura was visiting family. They got hammered by the snow.

Nelson County, Virginia
Pretty for Christmas, but not much trouble otherwise. That’s how you could best describe the snow that fell over Nelson this past Christmas weekend. Threats of a Winter Storm Watch and Winter Weather Advisory never really came to pass. Early predictions by forecasters (Unfortunately including this one. Crow now stewing in pot for consumption later) of 6+ inches of snow never happened. Hours before the storm hit, accumulation estimates were downgraded to an eventual 1-2 inches that covered Nelson County.

A very light coating of 1-2" of snow fell in most places across Nelson. Far short of the predicted 6+ inches forecasters were talking about last week leading up to the storm.

The big story over the next 24 hours will be cold temps and very high winds. A Wind Advisory is in effect until late Monday for gusty winds as high as 40-50 miles per hour, especially in the mountains.

The remainder of the week will see much milder temps move in, some readings not seen since November. By the new year highs near 60° in the valley are possible.

Merry Christmas to everyone! And, a very special thanks to those of you who dropped gifts here at NCL to help a couple of Nelson families have a very special Christmas this year. These families hit some pretty hard times in 2010, but with your help, the parents and children will have a wonderful Christmas because of your generosity. We, along with many of you, donated gifts and money.

A Special Thank you to:
Henri & Elaine Weems of Rodes Farm
Marlo Allen of Nellysford
Thomas & Aubrey Cutchin – Nellysford
The Grazianos – Manassas, VA
Beth Golden & Family – Shipman
The Fox Family – Falls Church, VA & Nellysford
Chris Barksdale – Nellysford
Morris & Anne Foster – Afton, VA
The Gormans – Melissa Staton & The Cardinal Point Crew

Ray Uttaro who has been coordinating the delivery of the gifts to the family will be playing Santa this Christmas Eve. Can you imagine the faces of those children when they see all of the wonderful gifts you made possible? The real spirit of Christmas!

We have been personally blessed this year by a new member to our family, and by your continued support over the years. We thank you, and hope you all have a very special Christmas this 2010.

Christmas Winter Storm Threat Diminishing Somewhat

5
Image ©2010 www.accuweather.com : As of Thursday evening, forecasters at AccuWeather believe the brunt of a Christmas weekend storm will not affect Nelson & Central Virginia. Click image for more details.

Nelson County, Virginia
Updated 6:00PM EST 12.23.10
As of Thursday evening forecasters, including those at AccuWeather.com believe the snowstorm threat for Central Virginia and Nelson County has diminished over the Christmas weekend. Does this mean we are out of the woods, absolutely not! But the current thinking is this storm will remain far enough off of the east coast to keep Nelson from seeing a major snowfall. But, a change of 50-100 miles in the track of this storm would make a major difference in snowfall amounts.

We will be frequently updating throughout the day Friday into the weekend as this system gets closer!

Earlier post
Everyone is wanting to know what a potential snowstorm will be doing this Christmas weekend. The short answer, no one knows just yet. Lots of things have to occur. But, most forecasters are beginning to agree, including me, that this storm has great potential. The reason no one can agree is because computer models that forecasters use to make predictions are not agreeing. They have been all over the place for the past 2-3 days. But, this quote from the folks over at accuweather.com caught my attention.

“Expert Senior Meteorologist Dale Mohler stated that he is noticing some similarities on the charts with this storm and the March 1993 super storm. Every storm is different, but I could see how this storm ‘bombs out’ somewhere along the East Coast. The question is how far north or east,” Mohler stated. AccuWeather.com meteorologists believe that none of the computer models have the exact idea on the storm, and they are basing current forecasts on years of experience in these situations.”

I agree, the models aren’t handling this very well at all just yet. I wasn’t here in 1993. I lived in West TN at the time. But many of you will remember that ’93 storm and from what I’m told it was a doozie!!

Stay tuned. This is not a definite by any means, but it certainly has the potential, and we’re talking inches and inches if all elements come together.

Winter’s Lunar Eclipse In Nelson By Ann Strober

Photos By Ann Strober : ©2010 www.nelsoncountylife.com : Ann Strober captures the rare lunar eclipse over Nelson County that coincides with the start of winter 2010.

We know exactly where Ann Strober was very early Tuesday morning on December 21st 2010. Behind the camera patiently waiting for a rare lunar eclipse that hasn’t coincided with the start of winter since 1638! WOW!

The eclipse as it was just beginning over the skies of Nelson County, Virginia early Tuesday morning, December 21, 2010.

Thankfully a large area of cloudiness held off until Ann could grab these fantastic shots. Though the Winter Solstice doesn’t’ officially being until 6:38 PM EST Tuesday evening (11:38 Coordinated Universal Time UTC) it is a very rare event indeed for the two to happen on the same date. More on Winter Solstice here from timeanddate.com And lots more on the lunar eclipse here from The Washington Post.

The eclipse shadowing about 50% of the moon as seen over Nelson County, Virginia 12.21.10

Thanks Ann for either staying up late or getting up very, very early to grab these photos!

If you are a Nelson Mag Facebook friend, you can view the entire sequence of Ann’s pictures by clicking here. We have shared them to our profile. If you aren’t our Facebook friend become one.
