What little girl wouldn’t love her very own ice castle? Inga Swiderski of Nellysford has her very own over and over each winter. Her dad, Pete, started making the ice creations for his daughter after remembering his own childhood back in Florida where citrus growers would spray their trees with a coating of water to protect them from freezing temperatures.

People rang in the 2011 New Year in style over at Veritas Vineyard and Winery. The annual Masked Ball kicked off on New Year’s Eve at 7PM with people dancing into the wee morning hours of January 1st! The night started with wine and hors d’oeuvers followed by a five-course winemaker’s dinner in Saddleback Hall. Dancing took place until midnight, when the masks came off and the champagne flowed! Breakfast followed at 12:30 a.m.

Impressive Temperature Inversion Occurring Across Nelson

This is a screen shot taken of our two NCL Weathernet Stations just after 5AM Friday morning. Our station at 3500' on Devils Knob is 14° warmer than the one here in the Rockfish Valley.

Though not a totally rare occurrence here in Nelson, it’s neat to see when it happens. Over the past day or so a temperature inversion has set up over the area. This means the temperatures are increasing as you go up in elevation. The exact opposite of what you’d normally see. When the screen shot was taken Friday morning (12.31.10) just after 5AM the temperature difference was 14° warmer at our NCL Wintergreen Nature Foundation site at 3500′ vs our Nelson County Life Magazine Office here in Greenfield about 5 miles north of Nellysford.

Not to worry about the snow in the mountains, ski conditions are perfect with a tremendous base! This will actually make for a perfect day to be on the slopes!

Warmer Temps Will Greet 2011

Photo By John McKeithen : Brilliant sunsets have been the order for the past couple of days as temps have become milder. Readings near 60° will arrive around the first of the year.

The final hours of 2010 are here! December 2010 was a very cold month on average with some nights in the single digits for overnight low in the valley and mountains. As we wrap up 2010 temps will climb to near 60° on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. There’s a tiny chance for a wintry mix as we start the day Thursday, but the day will mainly be dry with mostly cloudy skies.
