Graphic via usgs.gov : Another 4.5 aftershock rocked Nelsonians and a wide area of the Mid Atlantic early Thursday morning around 1:07 EDT.
Nelson County, Virginia
We were in a dead sleep here at NCL early Thursday morning when another 4.5 magnitude aftershock woke us. This one lasted longer than the original one we experienced on Tuesday, though the intensity was not as great.
“Woke me up out of a dead sleep in Lovingston,” Joanie Saunders told us on our Facebook page.
Our Facebook and Twitter pages were going nuts with posts after - the 1:07 AM aftershock near Mineral, VirginiaClick on the image above to read the details about Thursday morning's aftershock that woke up many people across the Mid-Atlantic.
Tommy and I had just wrapped up a business lunch meeting at Basic Necessities in Nellysford when we felt and heard a rumble which lasted for at least 20 seconds. A quick survey on our Facebook feeds showed simultaneous reports of tremors up along the east coast from as far north as New Hampshire. According to the USGS, the epicenter was in Mineral, Virginia which is in nearby Louisa County.
Incidentally, Adam and Peyton were at home with a great sitter who promptly scooped them up, taking them outside as this 100 year-old house shook. Peyton was oblivious to the geological event. Adam cried because he wasn’t wearing his orange Crocs. All are fine now, napping.
Tommy will be on the radio just after 4PM EDT to talk about the quake. You can listen to the stream live here at:www.kwam990.com

Via NHC: Hurricane Irene continues to churn out in the Atlantic with a path toward the mainland United States later this week. Virginia will likely see the effects of Irene by the weekend.
Nelson County, Virginia
Hurricane Irene is still days from having any effect on Virginians, but that may not be the case by the weekend. As of Monday morning Irene left about 800,000 people in Puerto Rico without power. Once she clears any land masses around the Bahamas and gets into the open water between there and the mainland U.S., significant strengthening is expected. As of Monday around noon, it appears the impact to Southern Florida will not be as great as that of other parts of the US such as the Carolinas.
The current position and anticipated track of Irene via the National Hurricane Center. By late in the coming weekend, Virginians may well be feeling the effects of Irene. Heavy rains are likely on the current path. This situation should be monitored closely for changes in the track and strength.

About $100,000.00 in damage. That’s what Wintergreen Fire Chief, Curtis Sheets estimates in a Wednesday morning fire at 534 Crawford’s Climb in Stoney Creek. The home belongs to The Croswell’s. “The fire was confined to an attached garage. One car was pushed out and saved by our guys, but two trucks were lost. A vehicle caught fire in the driveway, the nose of it was under the overhang and then caught the garage on fire,” Chief Sheets tells NCL.

Chief Sheets tells us no one at the home was injured. “We did have three firefighters treated. One for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and the other two for exertion.”
