For the 3rd year in a row people from all over turned out for the 3 mile, yes 3 miles, yard sale in Lowesville. East Nelson Photographer, Victoria Mininger, was there last year and headed on over to grab some shots of the day.

It’s been a tough start to the season for The NCHS Govs football team. But, our NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura was down off the peaks and on the field to capture Friday night’s action in the special Animoto slide show above. Paul is getting very, very good at these lately!
To add insult to Friday’s match, there was real injury at this game against The Riverheads. #51 Kevin Moore a senior at NCHS who plays offensive and defensive line was injured, carried off of the field and transported to an area hospital. At the end of the game Friday night, Paul said officials did not have a condition update.
NCHS stands at 0-3 for the season thus far.
Paul says “These kids play their heart out, but they just can’t seem to pull out a win.”

Saying good-bye is never easy. We all know it’s coming. It’s out there, we just never expect it to happen without everything being just right. Friday morning the NCL family said good-bye to our longest living pet, Jerky. We’re not exactly how old Jerky was, but at least 11 or 12 years for sure. He was the first pet Yvette and I had together way back in the days before children, before marriage, before Nelson County Life Magazine. Every major event in our lives, Jerky was there. We don’t even know what breed(s) Jerky was made up of. Most likely German Shepard and Beagle. It doesn’t matter. He was the best companion ever!
Yvette with Jerky near Mountain View, Arkansa in October of 2002. At the time we owned a mail order company. Jerky was there when we founded it too!
Thursday night we knew something was wrong. By Friday morning we knew it was not getting better. We had to make the decision in a matter of minutes. It was time to say so long to our trusted friend. The friend that made the long journey across the mountains of West Virginia to our new home here in Nelson County. In dog years he’d already spent at least 21 years with us before ever moving to Nelson. With the help of a dear special friend, we were able to send Jerky off peacefully here at home. Off to join his other buddies that passed before him. Millington. Angelo. They will all be having a pretty large weekend we’d say! After all it’s been years since they all got to hang out together.
Junior Publisher Adam Stafford (barely one year old in 2009) with his buddy Jerky down in the pasture.
Putting into words how much a pet means to you is never easy. It doesn’t convey. The smiles, the tears, those carefree summer days playing with your dog. Or a nap on a lazy rainy afternoon with your dog at your side. Jerky was all of those things and much more. He was as much a part of Nelson County Life Magazine as us. He was there from the start.
Jerky in our yard back on the farm in Tennessee. Fall 2002.Jerky with then new kitty Angelo in 2006. We lost Angelo earlier this year in May. Oddly Angelo showed up 2 days before Millington passed away. Jerky with his buddy Millington back in 2005. Both made the move to Virginia with us.
Our days will be different here at NCL. No question. But we will always look over that pasture out back and remember that special black and tan beagle running through the field, chasing deer or lying in the sun on a crisp fall afternoon. Or, resting in front of the wood stove on a cold winter’s night.
We miss you already Jerky, but know you are in a much better place. Rest well our friend.
BOARD OF SUPERVISORS’ SPECIAL CALLED MEETING
Wednesday, September 7, 2011
Present: Mr. Joe Dan Johnson, Mr. Tommy Bruguiere, Mr. Allen Hale, Mr. Tommy Harvey and Ms. Connie Brennan
LOVINGSTON HEALTH & REHABILITATION CENTER: Mr. Carter reported on the proposed new 90-bed facility in Albemarle County which would result in the closure of the Lovingston facility, noting that the county’s request to participate in the process and object to the closure would probably not be successful. He reported that Medical Facilities of Virginia XXXII Limited Partnership has offered a compromise of conveying the building to the county along with a payment of $10,000.
Mr. Phil Payne (County Attorney) reviewed the negotiations to date. Mr. Harvey asked for the closure time table and Mr. Payne said approximately three years. He said that he assumes Medical Facilities will appropriately maintain the building until it is turned over to the county. Supervisors asked about the value of the property and Mr. Carter said that it is approximately 8 acres plus the building valued at $2.2 million. Mr. Bruguiere said that when it is turned over, he wants to see it sold on the open market and does not want the county to own it. Mr. Hale agreed.
Mr. Payne distributed a draft Settlement and Release Agreement and a Donation Agreement. After review, Supervisors voted 4-0-1 (Mr. Johnson abstaining) to authorize Mr. Payne to amend the agreements to add a legal description of the property in question and to add the phrase, “upon closure of the facility as a nursing home” to prevent the use of the building for some other use. Mr. Johnson said that he abstained as he would not vote against the rest of the Board but would have preferred to fight the closure. Mr. Hale said that it is a difficult decision in terms of seeing the facility close, but that he feels it is the wisest course to follow. Ms. Brennan said that she is sad to see the center leave, hopes the employees are offered jobs at the new facility and hopes that Medical Facilities of Virginia will work with the county to find the best use for the building. Mr. Bruguiere said that he is sorry to see the business close with a loss of jobs and tax base. Mr. Johnson said that $10,000 is a slap in the face when one day in court would cost them more.
Mr. Payne asked that the Board vote to rescind their previous resolution asking to be made a party to the process as the county has reached an agreement with Medical Facility of Virginia. Supervisors voted 4-0-1 (Mr. Johnson abstaining) to rescind their previous motion.

Our NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura, came down down to grab this past Friday night’s shots in the new Animoto slide presentation above. Very neat Paul! Paul says the evening did have some good moments in spite of the big loss. “Tyler Vest scored Nelson’s first touchdown of the evening. (The sequence of this running play is on the Animoto above.) It was about an 80 yard run. It was spectacular!”
In spite of the team effort, it wasn’t enough to pull out a win.
Next week The Govs will play The Riverheads here in Nelson.
