Arrington : Bronze Statues Unveiled To Honor Nelson Natives Earl Hamner, Jr & Jimmy Fortune (Video)

Arrington
Nelson County, Virginia

It was a joyful, sometimes tearful day, at The Nelson County Historical Society – Oakland Museum. A typical hot and humid Virginia July was the backdrop as a few hundred people packed a tent and the grounds near the museum. They were there to watch a 2 hour program that ended with the unveiling of bronze statues honoring and remembering Nelson native writer Earl Hamner, Jr and songwriter Jimmy Fortune. Fortune is best known for his years touring with The Statler Brothers. The late Hamner is best known as the creator of the highly successful 70’s TV show, The Waltons.

Above in the video, Oakland Museum volunteers remove the veil to reveal the bronze statues that honor and remember singer/songwriter Jimmy Fortune and Schuyler native writer and creator of The Waltons, Earl Hamner Jr.

Oakland Museum volunteer and program coordinator and presenter, Woody Greenberg, tells those in attendance Saturday how the idea for the statues took shape and eventually became – reality. From left to right : Jimmy Fortune (singer & honoree) Actress Kami Cotler (she played Elizabeth on The Waltons) there to speak on behalf of the cast for the late Earl Hamner, Jr. Jesse Rutherford, Nelson BOS Chair and Greenberg.

In addition to the statues being unveiled at the end of the program, Nelson Board Of Supervisors Chairman Jesse Rutherford presented a resolution from the board proclaiming June 8, 2023 at Earl Hamner, Jr and Jimmy Fortune Day.

Jimmy Fortune, singer/songwriter from Nelson County, sings three different songs to the crowd in attendance on Saturday. One of the songs he sang was a favorite of Hamner’s – Virginia Dreams.

Ironically Earl Hamner, Jr. would be 100 years old on Monday – July 10th. Hamner passed away on March 24th, 2016. (More about his passing in our post from that date)

Kami Cotler, who played Elizabeth on the series The Waltons, made the trip from the west coast to Nelson County to speak on behalf of the cast of the show and reflect on her time with Hamner during the years since her start. Cotler was cast in the original 1971 pilot, The Homecoming, that was the TV inspiration for The Waltons that ran over the next decade in the 1970s. “Nelson is beautiful as always, and there is so much more to see and do! I visited the Quarry Gardens, which are so beautiful and inspiring. I see distilleries, cider presses, breweries…I even bought coffee beans roasted in Lovingston. I hadn’t visited the NC Historical Society’s Museum. They’ve done a beautiful job and adding an exhibit on local music makes it that much more interesting. I felt honored to be included in the celebration of Earl & Jimmy, and I’ve had a lovely time catching up with my Nelson Co friends from when I lived and taught here,” she told us the next day after soaking in the weekend of events.

Above in this video, the late Earl Hamner, Jr. discusses The Homecoming. Originally inspired from a novel written By Hamner, it eventually was turned into a TV movie and ultimately The Waltons.

In addition to the honorees speaking, many other friends and celebrities reflected on their association with Hamner and Fortune. One of the former members of The Statler Brothers was on hand to say a few words. Before his former musicians spoke, Fortune told the crowd, “I said if a statue is going to be made of me, one has to be made of Earl Hamner as well.”

The statues are on display for the public to see anytime they like. They are on the front lawn of The Nelson Historical Society & Oakland Museum in Arrington, Virginia just south of Lovingston. You can learn more about the genesis of the statues and other displays honoring Hamner and Fortune by heading on over to their website here.

Showers and thunderstorms, sometimes severe, paused long enough for Wintergreen Resort to put on their annual 4th of July fireworks display Sunday night. Storms earlier in the day paused and the yearly event went off without a hitch before more severe storms moved in just before midnight.

Lovingston Volunteer Fire Department also held their first annual fireworks show at the high school stadium on Monday night.

Rockbridge : Virginia’s Natural Bridge Now Under State Ownership

0

Rockbridge County, Virginia

Virginia’s landmark Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County is now fully under state ownership.

The deed establishing the Commonwealth of Virginia as the owner of the natural wonder and 1,530 acres surrounding it was recorded in Lexington on June 15.

The property was previously held by the Trust for Public Land (TPL), a national nonprofit organization that works to protect public land. The organization worked with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) through its acquisition process to transfer the property to the Commonwealth for permanent stewardship. It has been managed as a Virginia State Park since 2016.

“We are extremely grateful to the stakeholders who came together and worked tirelessly to make this acquisition possible. Now, the Department of Conservation and Recreation can ensure the protection of this natural, cultural and historic resource in perpetuity,” said Matthew Wells, DCR director.

Kent Whitehead, regional director of land protection for Trust for Public Land, said, “Although Natural Bridge has been open to the public for decades, until the conservation community stepped in, that public access was not guaranteed, and the surrounding land could have been subdivided and sold. TPL is proud to have played a role with other organizations and the Commonwealth in permanently protecting this iconic landscape for future generations.”

The deed’s recordation date coincided with the 87th anniversary of the Virginia State Park System, which opened in 1936 with just six parks — Douthat, First Landing, Fairy Stone, Staunton River, Hungry Mother and Westmoreland.

“Virginia’s state parks got a great anniversary present,” said Dr. Melissa Baker, director of Virginia State Parks. “Now Virginians, and people all over the world who are captivated by the Natural Bridge, can rest assured that this natural wonder will forever be accessible to them as a Virginia State Park.”

A National Historic Landmark, the Natural Bridge is a 215-foot-tall limestone gorge carved out by Cedar Creek that has drawn visitors since the 18th century.

Thomas Jefferson, who called the bridge “the most sublime of nature’s works” and thought it should be held in public trust, purchased the Natural Bridge and 157 acres from King George III of Great Britain 249 years ago.

In 2014, approximately 1,700 privately owned acres, including the Natural Bridge, were slated to be sold at auction. The Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund, administered by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and the Virginia Resources Authority (VRA), made a loan to prevent piecemeal development of the landmark.

“It’s important to realize that almost a decade ago, Virginians were at risk of losing public access to one of the Commonwealth’s most recognized and revered natural features,” said VRA Executive Director Shawn Crumlish. “The Virginia Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund made it possible to conserve this landmark and protect the streams on the property.”

TPL took over the remaining loan balance in 2022 for an interim conservation period.

“We could not have achieved this milestone in the history of state parks without our partners at TPL and VRA, and the foresight and dedication of past and present state parks field staff and agency leaders,” said Brian Fuller, real property manager at DCR.

The park’s master plan (PDF), approved in 2021, called for making several improvements after the state took ownership, including moving Route 11 off the bridge, as recommended by the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Big Storms Rolled Through Monday Night

Nelson County, Virginia

By Tommy Stafford

As predicted, in this post about watches for the area on Monday, huge storms with strong winds, hail and heavy rain pounded several counties in the Blue Ridge. The above photo  shows some of the lesser damage, but significant none the less.

Photo By Dondi Brandon : Hail falls on this deck in Afton – Monday – June 26, 2023
Clock on the screen grab of the image above to go to the history of Monday’s storm at our weather station in Roseland.

Our BRL-Maple Brook Farm rain gauge in Bryant/Roseland of Nelson County (above) measured 2.99″ inches of rain before midnight.

Many other locations received even more rainfall and more intense storm damage.

We have a quieter week ahead with seasonal days and cools nights. Other than a renegade shower or thunderstorm, no organized activity is expected until we get to Friday into the weekend.
