...Increased Fire Danger This Afternoon and Evening...

Across the Foothills and Piedmont region of Virginia and North
Carolina, relative humidities will reach a minimum of 20 to 30
percent during the afternoon hours. Sustained winds will be 10 to
20 mph with gusts of 20 to 30 mph.

These winds, low relative humidity levels, and low fuel moistures
will increase the risk of ignition and spread of wildfires this
afternoon and evening.

Across the North Carolina mountains, northwest winds will
be 15 to 30 mph sustained with gusts around 35 mph. The strongest
of these winds are expected in the morning hours, not coinciding
with the afternoon minimum relative humidities of 30 to 50 percent.

Residents in these areas are encouraged to postpone burning and
to properly extinguish all smoking materials. Many destructive
wildfires each year are started due to improperly discarded
smoking materials.

VADCR Richmond

Virginia State Parks campgrounds will open on March 3, 2023. Full-service campgrounds with bathhouses are open from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December, with the exception of Douthat, Hungry Mother, Pocahontas and Shenandoah River state parks, which have full-service campgrounds open year-round. Due to a campground renovation project, camping at Claytor Lake State Park will not open until April 1.

Spring is right around the corner and whether you are looking for a week long retreat or a restful weekend getaway, Virginia State Parks has you covered. The camping options are plentiful and vary from cabins and bunkhouses to yurts and primitive camping. Each park offers different scenic camping options, so be sure to do your research before booking your stay.

Are you a member of the Customer Loyalty Program? If not, check out the web page and see how you can start earning rewards for staying at a campground, cabin, bunkhouse or in a lodge at the parks you love.

Visit the camping web page for more details about reservations, cancelations and severe weather procedures. If you are traveling with horses, be sure to visit the equestrian camping page for all the policies dealing with horses while camping.

Reservations can be made online or by calling 1-800-933-PARK (7275) and choosing option 5. You can make lodging reservations up to 11 months in advance or, for camping, up to 2 p.m. on the day of arrival, so start planning your next adventure today.

All parks with campgrounds now offer site-specific reservations for campsites. This new reservation system allows a camper to view an interactive map and choose an available site to reserve.

Managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Virginia State Parks offers more than 1,800 campsites, with options ranging from primitive camping to RV sites with electric and water hookups.

Afton Mountain Overlook
Route 250
Near The Nelson/Augusta/Albemarle County Line

We’ve got a saying. “Even the drive to the dump is beautiful in Nelson!” And that’s the absolute truth. Thanks to Joy Rayman for these beautiful photos of the clouds down below as seen from the 250 overlook heading up Afton Mountain.

Incidentally, Joy was one of the first people we covered back in the inaugural issue in 2005. She was, and still is, part of a belly dancing group.

There’s Joy in the upper right photo in our very first issue back on April 1, 2005. How can that much time have passed already? Click to enlarge and read that story.

Joy took these photos looking down into the Rockfish Valley of Nelson on Sunday morning, February 26, 2023.
It’s not a totally rare occurrence to see this here in the Blue Ridge, but it doesn’t happen everyday either. Sunday – February 26, 2023

Looking down as the clouds hug the mountains at the Afton Overlook along Route 250 heading up the mountain. Sunday – February 26, 2023

What beautiful and peaceful photos Joy! Thank you and thanks for making us take a look back at that very first issue!

Wintergreen Resort
Nelson County, Virginia

It’s been a tough year for skiing at Wintergreen. On Friday the resort posted to their Facebook page that the 22-23 season would officially end this week on Sunday at 5PM.

“The southeast has experienced two consecutive weeks of record warm temperatures far above the seasonal norms for February. In spite of a valiant effort to keep the ski season going by making snow at every opportunity, we’ve made the difficult decision to conclude the 2022-23 winter season this Sunday, February 26 at 5:00pm.”

News Bulletin : VSP : Last Body Pulled From December Incident In Rockfish River

File : Photo via VSP : Crews searching the Rockfish River near Schuyler for victims of a fatal car incident where a vehicle went into the water. Wednesday – 12.28.22

Near Schuyler
Bridgeport Lane and Johnson Hollow
Nelson County, Virginia

From VSP:

“On Friday, Feb. 24, 2023, at approximately 9:50 a.m., Virginia State Police Search & Recovery Team (SRT) divers located the last missing body in the Rockfish River in Nelson County. The SRT has returned every week to the Rockfish River to search for the missing individuals since the vehicle they were riding in was swept away by rushing floodwaters in December.

The body recovered this morning will be transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner for autopsy, examination and positive identification.

This concludes the SRT divers’ search efforts.

At 11:41 a.m. on Dec. 27, 2022, the Virginia State Police was alerted to a submerged vehicle in the Rockfish River near the intersection of Bridgeport Lane and Johnson Hollow in Nelson County. A 1997 Toyota 4Runner tried to cross the flooded Rockfish River at a low river crossing on Bridgeport Lane and was swept away by the strong current. The crossing is on private property.

The bodies of Christopher W. Doss, 17, of Arrington, Va., and an 11-year-old male were located on the riverbank.

Once the Toyota was retrieved from the river, troopers recovered the body of Pharoh M. Shabazz, 30, of Arrington, Va., from inside the vehicle.

After multiple searches of the Rockfish River, the VSP SRT located the body of Myson Sylvestre, 18, of Arrington, Va. on Jan. 27, 2023.

None of the individuals were related.
