Major Phone Outage Across Nelson : Cable Cut : Service Restored – Updated 2.15.12 @ 10:45AM
Due to another cable being cut most telephone service in the 277 and 263 exchanges of Nelson County has been out for a big part of the afternoon.

NCL has learned the strike Tuesday to a Verizon cable was part of the ongoing construction project to install fiber internet to much of Nelson County. Preliminary indications by the county’s engineer firm, show the cable positions were likely improperly marked by a contractor for Verizon. This is similar to what happened a few weeks ago during a cut in Colleen. If this is the case, the construction crew wouldn’t have any fault in these incidents since they are simply following the markings put down by other marking crews.

For the second time in just weeks another major Verizon telephone cable has been cut severely affecting telephone service in Nelson County. The third we know of in less than a year. We were the first to report  the outage earlier as it was happening over on our Facebook and Twitter feeds. “A cable has definitely been cut. We are asking people with an emergency to use our regular Sheriff’s office line at 434.263.7050. It is still working, though you may only be able to call it from a cell phone depending on what part of the county you are in,” said Nelson Sheriff David Brooks. Sheriff Brooks says 911 circuits are down too and affected by the outage.

Even businesses on the western side of Nelson are being affected. Wintergreen Resort reported on their Facebook page:

“Wintergreen is experiencing internet and phone outages. Verizon has confirmed that a major line has been cut, affecting Wintergreen and Nelson County. Currently incoming and outgoing phone calls, email, internet access and online booking are not working. Verizon is working to resolve the issue, but does not have an estimated time for repair. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. Please contact us later.”

Other area businesses report that their regular phone lines are operational, but some speciality lines aren’t working, such as internet, and some credit card machines.

We had to do a double take ourselves when Paul sent this shot in. At first we thought, could we have blooms out there now after 9° the other night? Not to worry we noticed it was a file shot he had taken but a very nice one. Bleeding Hearts, appropriate for Valentine’s Day!

But it sure will be nice when we see them blooming for real!

Very High Winds Cause Saturday Night Power Outages Across Nelson

Winds gusting as high as 66 MPH in the mountains of Nelson County have caused numerous power outages Saturday night across the county. Early in the evening it was from Martins Store south into Nellysford and toward Beech Grove. Later in the evening after that power was restored it was points north from Martins Store toward Afton. Some residents in Schuyler were reporting outages around 8PM as well as a few residents in the Piney River area.

This screen grab from CVEC's outage map shows the areas out before 8PM Saturday night. Shortly after 8PM a majority of areas had power once again.

To make matters worse, temps plummeted into the lower 20’s by dark in the valley portions of Nelson and into the single digits in the mountains at Wintergreen. That combined with the high winds easily dropped wind chill readings well below zero.

Regardless of the howling outside and the freezing temps, folks at the RVCC sockhop made do with candle light and a small generator.

More than an honor, it was a distinct privilege to have three tour bus loads of people from the North American Farmers’ Direct Marketing Association make a stop at Saunders Brothers Farm Market in Piney River this past Saturday afternoon. It was all part of a week long tour hosted by the association’s Williamsburg event.

Members of the bus tour got the chance to check out some of the locally grown fruit produced by Saunders Brothers.

Between 150 to 200 people toured Saunders Brothers Saturday afternoon as part of the bus stop.

The market is not in operation during the cold winter months, but a special opening was held to accomodate the large bus tour.

Saunders Brothers Farm Market will open for regular seasonal operation in the Spring of 2012.

The staff and friends of the newly opened Devils Backbone Outpost Brewery in Lexington got a treat Friday afternoon when VA Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife, VA’s First Lady, Maureen McDonnell stopped in for a tour of the newly completed facility.

DBBC’s Lexington Outpost recently opened and is now providing commercial beer (on tap) production to area restaurants in Virginia. Their bottled beer production is expected to begin in the next several weeks.

If you’ve ever stepped foot in the door at the Rockfish Valley Community Center or been to the Nelson Farmers Market in Nellysford, you know Bo Holland. Bo has been the center manager at RVCC for years. This Friday (February 10th) Bo marks an end to that chapter as she’s moving on to greener pastures. Bo knows the RVCC building like the back of her hand, and through her love and care, has helped RVCC through some tough times and some good times too!

We even featured Bo on the cover of our October 2008 issue of NCL about chicks and their tractors!

Suspicious Package Found Near BB&T In Lovingston – ALL CLEAR: 10:53 AM Update
©2012 www.nelsoncountylife.com : BB&T in Lovingston has been evacuated due to a suspicious package being found near the bank. A VSP robot x-ray type device is being used to look inside the package to see if it poses any threat.

The Virginia State Police, Nelson Sheriff’s Office and various other support teams are on the scene of what’s being described as a suspisious package found this morning just outside of the BB&T bank in Lovingston.

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks conforms to NCL the package was found this morning as the bank was opening. The building was evacuated and a perimeter set up. “It looks like some kind of old briefcase or something similar. But aroused enough suspicion by an employee to contact police,” Sheriff Brooks tells NCL Thursday morning. The sheriff went on to say that a special Virginia State Police bomb unit is on the scene with equipment capable of shooting an x-ray to determine if the package might contain anything harmful, or simply nothing at all.

As Tommy talked about in his audio weather for Wednesday, light snow began falling across Nelson County. Most of the people seeing any snowflakes were up in the mountains at places like Love, Montebello, and Wintergreen. Other reports were coming in to our west from Staunton and Waynesboro as well.

No real travel problems have been reported and the significant snow will be over with by the early evening hours. Sunny skies return Thursday.

Back in December 2011 we told you about BRMC getting ready to open their newly constructed addition to the public. This past Tuesday years of planning and construction came to fruition as area dignitaries and the BRMC staff officially cut the ribbon to mark the opening of the new facility. NCL Mountain Photographer Paul Purpura came down to the flatlands to grab a shot of the ceremony on Tuesday afternoon.
