Nelson Commonwealth Attorney Martin Releases Charges In Fatal 151 Crash

NCL received the following release Tuesday morning regarding the fatal motorcycle accident last month at the intersection of Route 151 and Tanbark Drive in Afton.

Virginia State Police have charged a 17-year old juvenile from West Virginia with two charges: reckless driving (failing to yield the right-of-way) and failing to obey a highway sign.
The charges stemmed from a traffic accident that occurred on July 22, 2012 in Afton at the intersection of Route 151 and Tanbark drive in Afton. The accident claimed the life of two people from Rhode Island, a husband and wife, who were on a motorcycle when struck by the car driven by the juvenile.
A trial date in the Nelson County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District court is pending.
First Weekend Of August Was A Very Busy One Across Nelson

Tractor Trailer Accident Halts 29 N Traffic Near Nelson-Albemarle Line Monday Afternoon

People headed northbound near Faber on Route 29 Monday afternoon were going nowhere fast. A tractor trailer flipped over in the roadway on the northbound side shutting traffic down for at least a couple of hours. While towing crews worked to clear the highway, drivers sat and waited. Some got out of their cars and stretched as you can see in the picture above.
At one point traffic was backed all the up to Route 6 East headed toward Scottsville. Around 6PM Monday evening the roadway was clear and traffic was flowing normally.

Faber: Nelson Sheriff Stops Project-X Party With 2000 Possible Teens & Adults Before It Gets Started

Saturday morning August 4th, NCL received the following news information from Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks. The release has been posted verbatim below:
A planned Project X party in the Faber area was stopped before it started last night, August 3, 2012. Over 2000 teens and young adults responded on Facebook that they were planning on attending. Arrests have been made across the United States as young people have tried to emulate “Project X,” a new film about a high school house party that rages out of control.
The event sponsor (Carlos Kirk-CGK3 Records based in Indianapolis, IN) and event planners (some being local Nelson residents) did not obtain the proper documents to hold the event and according to the landowner were deceitful about why the property was rented. Even though they advertised the planned event on Facebook, you needed to provide a cell phone number to get the exact location of the party. One person planning to attend posted on Facebook that the address was being guarded, “so the Pigs don’t find out the location and try to shut it down before it gets started”.
Summonses were issued on some of the party planners for underage possession of alcohol and possession of narcotics.
We were pleased to be able to intervene before this party got started as we feel this could have quickly gotten out of control as it has in other locations.

If you’ve noticed a bunch of Fiats on the roads of Nelson lately, there’s good reason! Fiat FreakOut 2012 is going on this weekend at Wintergreen Resort. All types have been making their way down 151 up to the resort.
According to the FreakOut website:

FFO is four days of events that feature a track day, concours car show, coordinated scenic drives including the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway, visits to historic sites and lots of socializing. The FFO is not just about show cars…it’s a great opportunity to talk to manufacturer representatives, knowledgeable vendor sponsors and other enthusiasts about your vehicle.

Annual Hop Harvest At Blue Mountain Brewery

For years now the folks over at Blue Mountain Brewery have made harvesting the hops a community event. This past Wednesday afternoon Nelson’s first established microbrewery cut down the hops and started separating them to be used in the two time award winning Blue Reserve
As part of the afternoon, Tara Mills played tunes from 2-5pm.
We’ve told you about Stan Driver’s handy work with the hops for several years now.
Can’t wait to have some of the beer the hops are used in!
