Five years ago today, Devils Backbone Brewing in the Beech Grove / Roseland area of Nelson County, VA opened its doors for business. “I never envisioned we would be what we are five years later,” Founder & Owner Steve Crandall told us during a recent lunch about turning 5. In November 2008 it was just what’s now called the Basecamp that consisted of the charter brewery and the accompanying restaurant. A brewpub that, just again, won Small Brewpub & Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival last month in Denver.

“Back then we just thought the Basecamp restaurant and brewery would be it. Now we have a huge expansion underway at our Outpost facility in Lexington, and there’s even more exciting news on the horizon in the near future,” Steve continued. That expansion is adding tons of new space to the production brewery in Rockbridge County, VA

With the coldest temps of the season projected for this weekend, Wintergreen Resort says they will begin making snow on Sunday, just in time for Thanksgiving.

It’s crazy to say, but they just might have some areas of the resort open for winter snow sports by Thanksgiving. An incredibly cold air mass is headed for the Blue Ridge during the second half of the weekend which will lend to ideal conditions for making snow. Wednesday the resort posted this to their Facebook page:

A blast of cold air is headed our way and you know what that means – SNOWPOWER®! Our team of snowmaking experts is poised ready to start as soon as the temperatures drop. And the really exciting news is that there is a strong possibility that we’ll have some terrain and tubing open during the Thanksgiving holiday.

Talk about an early start, if it all work out, this will be very, very cool!

We first told you about the inaugural event Bouncing For Hams back in December 2010. That was the inspiration for Bouncing For Turkeys that raises money for The Nelson County Pantry. That money is used to buy turkeys for needy families during the holidays.

BRL Juniorette Publisher Peyton Stafford got in on a little of the jumping. Chad Williams, a manager with Devils Backbone helps out Peyton is the coordinator for the 2013 event.

Folks bouncing started at 5PM Tuesday and someone will constantly be jumping for a 24 hour period ending at 5PM on Wednesday.

We told you about the proposed Minotaur rocket launch Tuesday night in this post. Sadly, a thin veil of clouds moved across parts of the Blue Ridge blocking the view. But not if you were there! After a short delay the rocket blasted off at 8:15 EST. BRL Publisher Yvette Stafford and Junior Publisher Adam Stafford were at the launch site and grabbed the video above. Adam added a bit of his own commentary!

Most people in the Blue Ridge area will have a good view Tuesday night of the Minotaur Rocket Launch from Wallops Island, VA. The scheduled launch window is between 7:30 p.m. EST & 9:30 p.m.

It was a nasty dreary day for lots of folks this past Saturday. Especially if you were on the east side of the Blue Ridge. Low clouds and fog trapped at the surface banks up against the easter slopes of the Blue Ridge Parkway and made it a cool, damp Saturday. But if you went up a few thousand feet, it was full sunshine! Unfortunately we’ll see more rain for everyone back in the forecast on Sunday, ending overnight Sunday.
