Once the crisp mountain days of October hit you know it’s time for Apple Butter making in the Blue Ridge. Silver Creek & Seamans’ Orchards kicked off their annual festival this past Saturday along with many of the other area orchards.

Nelson EMS Director Miller: ” the person has been found. Safe & sound. On Wilson Hill Rd headed out toward Route 29.
Nelson County EMS Director Jaime Miller and Nelson Sheriff David Brooks have confirmed to BRLM that a search is being organized for a missing 65 year old woman in the Arrington area of Nelson County. “She’s a 65 year old female that walked off from the area of the church on Centenary. She is from Australia, visiting her sister here in the states. She has on a blue parka. According to dispatch she went missing 4-5 hrs ago” Director Miller told us around 3PM Saturday afternoon.
Several area search crews are being called in to help along with volunteers since many search & rescue crews have been tied up in the search for missing UVA student Hannah Graham.

As BRL was the first to report in our Twitter feed early Saturday, an overturned milk truck has shutdown the intersection of Route 151 & 250 while crews continued to clean up the mess. As of 10:35 AM the roadway was still blocked but one lane of Route 250 was open. VDOT believes Route 250 will open soon, but Route 151 may be closed several hours due to cleanup.

Forget about the 70’s & 80’s for a good while, some places won’t break 60° on Saturday. And Saturday night some of the lowest lying protected areas and the highest of elevations in the mountains could see some patch frost!

As events unfold in the disappearance of UVA student Hannah Graham, a request was made on Thursday from the attorney, Michael J. Hallahan II, representing Randy Taylor who was convicted and sentenced to two life sentences for murder by a Nelson County jury in connection with the abduction of Alexis Murphy.
The request asked for CA Martin to have DNA samples in connection with the arrest of Jesse Mathew in the Graham case to be compared with those taken in the Alexis Murphy case.
The letter requesting a rexamination of DNA by Randy Taylor’s attorney above in a post from Hawes Spencer who has been doing investigative pieces on the disappearance of Hannah Graham.

Beech Grove

Over the weekend Nelson County lost one of the kindest and most sincere people I have ever met. Robert Mansfield of Beech Grove passed away on Saturday. You can hardly meet a person that didn’t know Mr. Mansfield. And, if they did know him, you never heard anything other than kind words spoken about him. I last saw Mr. Mansfield at one of the cabin days or music events there in Beech Grove a few years back. We’d done several stores with him over the years, one of my favorites was on the old Dodd Cabin that he was restoring. It appeared in our then April 2008 issue of Nelson County Life Magazine.
Listen to my interview with Mr. Mansfield back in March of 2008 about his move to Nelson, his ministry, and the restoration of the old Dodd cabin in Beech Grove. He touches on many things from his past in this roughly 10 minute interview.
By far Mr. Mansfield had become best known for his Piney Mountain Ministries founded back in 1975. He was there just this past July doing what he’s been doing for decades before.
Will miss you Mr. Mansfield, greatly, but the work you have done and the impression you have made on countless people will live on for generations to come.
