Central Virginia Blue Ridge
The Thanksgiving Eve snowstorm everyone has been talking about will be taking shape on Wednesday. The areas most dramatically affected will be in the highest of elevations, but any heavy snowfall down below has the potential to create some tricky driving as well. A Winter Storm Warning is in effect Wednesday from 3AM until 6PM.

Winter Storm Warning
Statement as of 7:43 AM EST on November 26, 2014
…Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 6 PM EST this
evening…
* precipitation type…snow.
* Accumulations…1 to 3 inches below 1500 feet. 8 to 16 inches
above 1500 feet.
* Timing…snow will continue through today along the ridge tops
above 1500 feet. A mixture of rain and snow below 1500 feet will
change to all snow by noon. The heaviest snow is expected
through 2 PM this afternoon. Snow will end late this afternoon.
* Temperatures…upper 20s to lower 30s along the ridge tops
above 1500 feet. Lower to middle 30s below 1500 feet.
* Winds…north becoming northwest 5 to 10 mph with gusts around
15 mph.
* Impacts…roads will become snow covered and slippery and
visibility may be reduced below a half mile at times…mainly
for elevations above 1500 feet. Interstate 64 will be impacted
by the snow. Snow will have a significant impact on Holiday
travel plans for today…especially for travelers headed north and
west through the Blue Ridge mountains and Potomac Highlands.
Heavy amounts of wet snow along the ridge tops may cause downed
trees that lead to an enhanced threat for power outages.
Precautionary/preparedness actions…
A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow
are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an
emergency. If you must travel…keep an extra flashlight…
food…and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

* Timing…Wednesday morning through Wednesday afternoon.
* Temperatures…upper 20s to lower 30s above 1000 feet. Lower to
middle 30s below 1000 feet.
* Winds…becoming northwest around 10 mph with gusts 15 to 20 mph.
* Impacts…roads may become snow covered and slippery…
including interstates 81…70…83…66 and 64. This may have
a significant impact on Holiday travel plans for Wednesday.
Heavy amounts of wet snow may cause downed trees that lead to
an enhanced threat for power outages.
Precautionary/preparedness actions…
A Winter Storm Watch means there is a potential for significant
snow…sleet…or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

Six years ago we told you about Devils Backbone Brewing Company opening the doors. This past friday night the Basecamp and Outpost in Lexington celebrated with a thank you get together. The party consisted of tons of complimentary hors d’oeuvres, music and fun.
Since those early days, DB has grown into a full blown production facility with that location in Lexington.

Wintergreen Resort

As we told you several days ago, Wintergreen Resort started making snow, the earliest ever. Ultra cold temps with overnight lows in the single digits have allowed the resort to keep making snow around the clock. Their plans are to open the weekend following Thanksgiving. That would be a first as well!

For years we’ve been telling you about the annual Cardinal Point Oyster Roast. This year didn’t disappoint. There was a chill in the air, but full sunshine and yep, plenty of oysters! Tickets sold out on Saturday. They finished up the 2014 roast Sunday afternoon.

Wintergreen Resort

Around dark Friday the snowmaking officially began at Wintergreen Resort. It’s the earliest in their history, ever that snow’s been made. Plans are to open the resort Thanksgiving weekend.

Our BRL Mountain Photographer Paul Purpura is up at Wintergreen this evening and will be bringing us more pictures throughout the weekend as the snow piles up.

Almost on cue, knowing Wintergreen Resort had plans to start making snow on Friday, (the earliest ever incidentally) Mother Nature kicked in to lend a starting hand Thursday evening. As we were posting all afternoon, the wintry mix began falling in the highest of elevations on Devils Knob about an hour before nightfall. As day turned to night and colder temps began moving down the mountains, light snow started falling around the Mountain Inn.
Above our Instagram video taken just before dark Thursday evening when the snow just started falling around the 3500′ level on Devils Knob.
Additional light accumulations were reported in the higher elevations overnight Thursday.
By Friday, Tommy says we’ll see sunny skies but temps remain cold for the next week. Another chance for wintry precipitation moves back in by Sunday into Sunday night!
