When we stopped in to drop off our check to Stu Mills on Monday afternoon, he was busy at his computer reviewing a spreadsheet and going through a stack of checks people in the community had sent. “The response has been overwhelming. It’s very heartening to see the generosity,” Stu said.

BRL presented a check for $1000 to help raise the funds necessary to complete a windows project at RVCC.

Stu is asking anyone that still has pledged money to please send it in by August 1st. He went on to say that he’s confident they will have more than enough to match the Perry Foundation Grant of $20,000. On or before the first of the month.

In an email prepared for individuals who have pledged contributions in the campaign to send back the Dominion Foundation grant proceeds, Stu Mills, the Executive Director of the Rockfish Valley Community Center, announced the following:

“We are very pleased to report that RVCC has today returned the $20,000 that the Dominion Foundation had granted to us for our Green Initiative project. The check went out in this morning’s mail …

“… We would ask that you fulfill your pledge at your earliest convenience. We would like to have the funds in hand by August 1st in order that we may notify the Perry Foundation that we have fulfilled our obligation of matching their very generous challenge grant in the amount of $21,317. The sooner we have the donations in hand to show them, the sooner we will have access to these funds as well, and the sooner we will be able to start replacing the 61 windows in the main building, and having our idle geothermal heating/cooling system re-ducted and operational once again.”

Checks can be made out to RVCC with “Green Initiative” on the memo line. Credit Card payments are also accepted at the RVCC office, at the Treasure Chest ,or on the organization’s website at http://rockfishvalleycommunitycenter.memberlodge.com/donations

As a proud supporter of RVCC since we first began publishing our magazine in 2005 – then called Nelson County Life – Blue Ridge Life is eager to honor its pledge and will soon deliver a check to Mr. Mills in the amount of $1000.00.

In a meeting held Tuesday evening – July 19, 2016 at the Rockfish Valley Community Center in Afton, the board voted unanimously on motion to return a Dominion Foundation grant that was received earlier this year. As we first told you in these earlier stories, considerable resistance was met when word of the grant surfaced. Many objected to taking the money since the same family of companies is also pursuing the Atlantic Coast Pipeline through Nelson County.

According to the board a total of $28,737.00 in pledges was raised outside of the grant. Some of those were specifically directed at the green initiative project, but more than enough was been pledged to cover the windows program matching grant.

The board plans to notify Dominion Foundation tomorrow of its decision to return the grant.

For the second time in a week another family is homeless after fire struck their home. The most recent was Sunday afternoon around 5pm in Gladstone of Southeast Nelson County. Julie and William Gunter along with their family lost everything.

“It’s just so devastating. The lost everything but a few things her grandfather had given Julie. They lost pets, lots of them. Including three adult dogs, puppies and more,” Katie Gunter Franklin, a cousin, told us.

Katie says a man passing by noticed the fire and kicked out a window freeing some of the animals. No one was home at the time.

Strong storms that moved through the area Wednesday afternoon and evening are believed to be the cause of a fire that left a family’s house gutted on Brogan Hollow Lane. “It was a total loss,” said friend Natasha Hall. Her son is best friends with one of the family members. Kenny (Wayne) Mays and five other family members spent the night in a hotel provided by the Red Cross, according to Natasha.

The fire has left Mr. Mays and family without a home currently. Their friend Natasha Hall has set up a go fund me account below, and is asking for clothing needs in the posts below.

The line of storms that passed through the area lit up the sky with brilliant lighting. Many people sent images to us or reported the intense storms about the time the home caught on fire.

According to Tommy’s Weather, similar storms are forecast again today late in the afternoon after the heat and humidity kick in and get them going.
