Nelson : CVEC Payment Kiosks Go Live

02.09.17 CVEC Kiosk

Arrington
Nelson County, Virginia

CVEC has announced new, round-the-clock payment centers at each of its three offices located in Colleen, Appomattox, and Palmyra. With convenient 24/7 access, the recently installed electronic kiosks will accept local payments using bankcards, checks, and cash (sorry no change).

“Members have different schedules and preferences in how they pay their electric bills,” offered CVEC spokesman, Greg Kelly. “The Cooperative is responding so that members can now pay their electric bills on site, during and outside of regular business hours, and have those payments posted immediately to their accounts.”

The kiosks expand the current options that include automatic bank draft, mail in, online and telephone payments.

“Knowing that some members prefer to visit our offices, we understand that the kiosk payment centers will offer a convenient alternative before we open the doors in the morning or after a member leaves work in the evening. We are pleased to introduce the new payments centers and believe the members will find them beneficial.” continued Kelly.

Press release verbatim below from VSP:

Update : Feb 10, 2017

“AUGUSTA CO., Va. – A second individual has been charged in connection with the non-fatal, officer-involved shooting at an Augusta County Rest Area on Interstate 81 that occurred Sunday (Feb. 5, 2017) evening.

The incident began with a suspicious person call to the Virginia State Police Appomattox Field Division about two individuals at the southbound Interstate 81 Rest Area at the 232 mile marker in Augusta County. The male subjects were making comments that alarmed another motorist who had also stopped out at the Rest Area.

A Virginia State Police trooper responded to the Rest Area at 9:46 p.m., Sunday. He approached the two adult males at their vehicle and during the course of talking with them, one of the male subjects fled on foot.

The male subject, Shaun A. Riley, 34, of Elkton, Va., ran across the southbound lanes, through the median and across to the northbound Rest Area. The trooper ran after Riley on foot. The trooper encountered Riley at the fence line behind the Rest Area. Riley then pulled out a knife and advanced on the trooper. Riley was subsequently shot.

Riley was flown to UVA Hospital in Charlottesville where he continues to be treated for serious injuries. On Feb. 9, 2017, Virginia State Police charged Riley with one felony count of attempted malicious wounding of a police officer.

The second male subject, Jason P. Hess, 34, of Bluefield, Va., was detained at the southbound Rest Area by State Police for questioning. Further investigation by state police led to Hess being charged with one misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana.

The trooper was not injured in the incident. In accordance with Virginia State Police policy, the trooper has been placed on administrative leave with pay.

The incident is being investigated by the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office. The investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Press Release Via CVEC:

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative (CVEC) is pleased to announce it will be working with AcelaNet, LLC to develop solutions to provide broadband connectivity to the members of the Cooperative over the next five years.

AcelaNet submitted a proposal in response to a Request for Information issued by CVEC in September 2016.  The proposed system includes a combination of fiber optic cable and wireless technologies to reach CVEC members throughout the Cooperative territory spread across the rural portions of 14 central Virginia counties.  The goal of the program is to have broadband service available to all CVEC members within five years from the start of construction.
CVEC President and CEO, Gary Wood, outlined the Cooperative’s motivation for embarking on the project, “Eighty years ago, CVEC members joined together to improve their quality of life and economic opportunity through rural electrification. Today, we begin the work of overcoming the digital divide for the very same reasons.”

AcelaNet, a regional Internet Service Provider (ISP) based in Nelson County, has experience serving rural areas, with active projects in central Virginia counties, including Amherst, Albemarle, Buckingham, Louisa, Nelson, and Appomattox. AcelaNet CEO, Lon Whelchel, commented on the opportunity, “Working with CVEC is a natural fit. AcelaNet is committed to deploy true broadband in the same rural areas served by the Cooperative. Using the utility poles as a delivery platform will allow us to achieve our mission along with the help and cooperation of localities and the rural residents.”

There are many hurdles to be overcome for the project to become viable on a system wide basis.  CVEC and AcelaNet seek to develop a regional effort engaging the CVEC members and local businesses as well as assistance at the local, state and federal level to overcome the physical, financial, legal, and regulatory hurdles to providing universal service to rural Virginia.  The Cooperative and AcelaNet will begin work immediately to develop the framework for the infrastructure project.  The time line, logistics, and costs for the project and services will be announced after a comprehensive plan has been established.

For more information on CVEC For information about AcelaNet and to indicate interest in receiving service, visit www.acelanet.com. AcelaNet will be managing the enrollment and scheduled deployment and will contact CVEC members and others when service is available. Some might be served immediately from the infrastructure that is already in place.

The Cooperative does advise interested members that an important first step has been taken but specific details and the schedule of service availability will be announced in the future when an implementation plan is complete. CVEC and AcelaNet will contact members at that time.

AcelaNet, operating as SCS Broadband and CVALink, delivers high-speed broadband services over fiber and wireless equipment in central Virginia. The company is committed to delivering high quality Internet service to meet the growing needs of businesses, schools, local government and residents.

Headquartered in Lovingston, Central Virginia Electric Cooperative is a member-owned electric-distribution utility serving nearly 36,000 meters in the rural portions of 14 central Virginia counties. For more information about the Cooperative, visit www.mycvec.com.

As Tommy talked about in weather, the temps Wednesday soared into the lower 70s in the lowlands and even made it into the middle 50s in the higher elevations around 3500 feet.

A perfect day for a hike. BRL Publisher Yvette Stafford and friends went along on one of the many hikes The Nature Foundation at Wintergreen hold throughout the year.

Here’s how they described Wednesday’s :

“Join TNFW staff member, Josh Palumbo on an exploration of seldom seen panoramas at Wintergreen. This bushwhack will go to hidden rock outcrops, waterfall views and other hidden gems of the Wintergreen wilderness. The journey will involve multiple bushwhacks into different locales, so be prepared for difficult terrain and uneven footing.”
