Updated 2:45 PM : 4.20.27

UPDATE by VDOT:

” Spring rain has delayed the installation of advance-warning rumble strips on Route 250 eastbound, which will alert motorists of the signal ahead. To provide the safest condition for full activation of the signal, VDOT will keep it in flash mode over the weekend, until the rumble strips can be installed. Regular signal operation is planned to begin Tuesday, April 25.”

Information via VDOT:

“The temporary signal at the intersection of Route 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 151 (Critzers Shop Road) near the Albemarle-Nelson county line was placed in flash mode late this afternoon.

The signal and accompanying advance warning flashers will be fully operational on Thursday, April 20.

Motorists are asked to use caution driving through the area while traffic adjusts to the new traffic pattern.

A more extensive project is in development to convert the intersection to a roundabout. The safety improvement project will address a history of turning-related crashes at the high-volume intersection. Route 250 carries 6,700 vehicles per day and Route 151 carries 10,000 with about seven percent truck traffic daily on both routes. Pending funding approval, preliminary engineering on the project will begin in 2018.”

For almost a year, we have been following the mystery surrounding the piece of property between Wells Fargo Bank and University Of Virginia Community Credit Union in Nellysford along Route 151. Last summer we confirmed that Dollar General (DG) was looking seriously at the property to locate a new store. Tuesday, the Tennessee-based company finally confirmed that the construction we have been telling you about for several weeks is indeed for the new store.

WPOA was first to confirm the news.

“The Broadway Group has purchased one of our commercial lots fronting Route 151 in Nellysford. WPOA is not certain of their construction timeline. The attached photos (rendering-above) shows the final result of many hours of collaboration between the Dollar General Store design team and the WPOA Architectural Review Board,” said Jay Roberts WPOA Executive Director

Above a photo shot on Tuesday – April 18, 2017 clearly shows Dollar General on the building permit that’s been displayed on the property at least since March of this year.

After multiple attempts to get DG confirmation, BRL received the following press release Tuesday afternoon from Laura Somerville, a representative from the company’s PR department.

“We are excited to bring a new location to Nellysford. As you noted, we are working diligently on a new store located on Rockfish Valley Highway. Based on the initial construction timeline, I anticipate the store will open by mid to late-fall, but feel free to check back periodically as we get closer since construction progress can alter the exact timeline.

When choosing store locations, meeting customers’ needs is Dollar General’s top priority. The company looks for places where we can offer customers an easy and convenient shopping choice. We know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions as we generally serve customers within a three to five mile radius, or 10 minute drive. We also take demographic trends, competitive factors, traffic patterns and community concerns into consideration.

The store will employ approximately 6-10 employees, depending on the individual needs of the store. Anyone interested in joining one of America’s fastest-growing retailers may apply for available positions online at www.dollargeneral.com/careers.

Dollar General sells quality name-brand and private brands merchandise such as health and beauty products, home cleaning supplies, housewares, stationery, seasonal items and basic clothing. We also sell an assortment of packaged foods, as well as some refrigerated foods and frozen foods.

Dollar General gives its customers more than everyday low prices on basic merchandise as part of its mission of Serving Others. Dollar General is deeply involved in the communities it serves and is an ardent supporter of literacy and education through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which awards grants each year to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs. Since its inception in 1993, the DGLF has awarded more than $127 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 7.9 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education. For more information about the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and its grant programs, visit www.dgliteracy.com

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation also supports customers interested in learning how to read, speak English or earn their high school equivalency test. At the cash register of every Dollar General store, customers may pick up a brochure with a postage-paid reply card that can be mailed in for a referral to a local organization that offers free literacy services.
