Solar Eclipse August 2017 In The History Books!

©2017 Blue Ridge Life : BRL Publisher Yvette Stafford shows Juniorette Publisher Peyton Stafford & Junior Publisher Adam Stafford how to view the eclipse in a homemade pinhole projection box. Monday – August 21, 2017

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

If you missed your chance at seeing the eclipse on Monday, not to worry, you will have another opportunity in 7 years. The next total solar eclipse will be on April 8, 2024. Though you will have to travel out of the Mid Atlantic to get a really good look.

When the eclipse was about 50% in effect you could see it easily on a projection box like the photo below and through tree limbs projected onto objects like this bucket on a tractor.

Conditions more or less cooperated across the Blue Ridge, but some people eneded up having clouds and thunderstorms so the only got to see little to none of the eclipse.

UPS Driver Jimmy Campbell of Nelson County took a quick peek through one of the box viewers we made when he was dropping off a package at our office.
Photo By Lurene Cachola Kelley : One of my former news colleagues, Lurene Kelley of Memphis, shot this photo Monday afternoon in St. Genevieve County, Missouri. It was one of the locations in the US that saw a total eclipse. Notice the sunset look as the eclipse reached its peak. This was at 1:18 PM CST on August 21, 2017.
The view of the solar eclipse when it was at about 50% of coverage. Here in the Blue Ridge the peak of the eclipse was around 2:40 PM Monday afternoon – August 21, 2017.

Hope you got to see the eclipse and if not, see you in 7 years!

Back in 2008 Peter and Betsy Agelasto of Elk Hill made sure there was a permanent marker put up to remember the dozens of people that died here in Nelson. Hurricane Camille was their fate. Camille was one of the 10 most devastating hurricanes in history. Each year The Agelasto’s have Amy Webb place commemorative wreath where the marker is at the start of the Rockfish Valley Trailhead.

Augusta : Stable Craft Brewing Announces 2018 Wilderness Series

0

Waynesboro
Augusta County, Virginia

The new Stable Craft Brewing Wilderness Series will combine two things that runners love: scenic views and tasty brews.

“Work up a sweat in the road race, then cool down back at the brewery with one of our signature beers,” said Craig Nargi, the owner of Stable Craft Brewing, which is partnering with Augusta County in presenting the Wilderness Series.

The county announced last week that Stable Craft Brewing had been awarded a $3,000 grant through the Augusta County Tourism Grant program.

Stable Craft was one of four granted awards through the program – along with White’s Wayside, Jam Fish Music Festival and Red Wing Roots Music Festival.

“Augusta County was extremely impressed by this year’s applications for the tourism grant program,” said Tracy Pyles, chair of the Augusta County Board of Supervisors. “The award winners have strong potential to promote other tourism partners in the county, as well as attract new tourists to our area.”

The road races in the Wilderness Series, which kicks off next March, are expected to draw runners from throughout the Mid-Atlantic.
“The two are a natural fit. Runners are always on the lookout for new places to run, and craft breweries like Stable Craft provide great natural scenery, in addition to something to do when the race is over,” said Wilderness Series organizer Woody Elliot, who has more than a decade of experience creating fun, challenging races for the likes of Devils Backbone Brewing Company and the Virginia State Parks.

Award-winning Stable Craft brewer Christopher Fann is creating five unique, out-of-bounds beers for the Wilderness Series, which is set to launch in September. “The goal with the special brews on tap is to provide that extra bit of incentive to get through that last mile and get back to the Stable,” Fann said.

Blue Ridge Life Magazine along with Marriott Residence Inn Waynesboro are two of the first charter sponsors that have signed on for next year’s series.

Look for more details in the coming months!

Midlothian, Virginia

People are still processing the tragic helicopter accident in Charlottesville on Saturday when two VSP pilots were killed. The chopper they were flying went down. They had been lending air support during the protests taking place downtown. In addition to brothers and sisters in the police community mourning their loss, those in the mountain biking community are saddened at losing one of their fellow cyclists.

Above, BRL Embrace The Adventure columnist and Virginia Off Road Series Founder, Woody Elliott, remembers his friend and trail cycling enthusiast Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen. Cullen was a helicopter pilot with the Virginia State Police. He was killed on Saturday – August 12, 2017 when his police chopper crashed in Charlottesville, Virginia. Woody, reflects on his friend in this brief audio interview.

Photos courtesy Virginia State Police : At 4:51 p.m., Saturday (Aug. 12), a Virginia State Police Bell 407 helicopter crashed into a wooded area near a residence on Old Farm Road in Albemarle County. The helicopter was assisting public safety resources with the ongoing situation in Charlottesville.
The pilot, Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen, 48, of Midlothian, Va., (left) and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates of Quinton, Va., died at the scene.

Early reports published in this LawEnforcementToday.com article cite mechanical problems as the cause of the crash. A more detailed investigation is now underway by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Lt. Cullen’s family and Trooper-Pilot Bates’ family.
