…THE FLOOD WARNING HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR NELSON…ORANGE AND
ALBEMARLE COUNTIES AND THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE…

Flood waters are receding across the region, and are no longer
expected to pose a threat to life or property. Please continue to
heed any road closures.

205 PM EST Sun Feb 11 2018

…FLOOD WATCH IS CANCELLED…

The Flood Watch for portions of North Carolina, Virginia, and
southeast West Virginia has been cancelled.

Heavy rains have pulled out and aside for some minor river
flooding in portions of the mountains, the additional rainfall
expected through tonight is not anticipated to cause additional
flooding issues.

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SATURDAY EVENING THROUGH SUNDAY EVENING
Flood Watch
National Weather Service Blacksburg VA
402 PM EST Sat Feb 10 2018

…Moderate to heavy rain expected this weekend…

.A cold front will slowly cross the Appalachians this weekend
from the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. Several waves of low
pressure will move northeast along the front resulting in
multiple periods of moderate to heavy rain. This rainfall, in
addition to snowmelt in the upper reaches of the Greenbrier and
James Rivers, may result in flooding.

The greatest river flood threat will be along the Greenbrier
River where confidence is increasing that minor to potentially
moderate flooding may occur Sunday to Monday. This will greatly
depend on the amount of rainfall and snowmelt which takes place.

…FLOOD WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM EST THIS EVENING
THROUGH MONDAY MORNING…

The Flood Watch continues for

* Portions of Virginia and southeast West Virginia, including
the following areas, in Virginia, Alleghany VA, Bath,
Botetourt, Craig, and Rockbridge. In southeast West Virginia,
Eastern Greenbrier, Monroe, Summers, and Western Greenbrier.

* From 7 PM EST this evening through Monday morning

* Periods of moderate to heavy rainfall are expected. The
potential for over 2 inches of rain exists across the watch
area. The heaviest rainfall is expected tonight through
Sunday.

* Excessive rainfall, combined with an already saturated ground
and snowmelt, may lead to flooding along streams, creeks,
rivers and in low lying areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Those living along the Greenbrier River should begin taking
precautions. There is still a snowpack in the upper reaches of
the basin. If all of this snow melts during the peak of this rain
event, this will greatly increase the chances for flooding.

The river level at Alderson is already half bank full from the
last rain event, which means it will not take as long to reach
flood stage if heavy rain occurs. Based on the latest forecast,
if flooding occurs on the Greenbrier River it would be on Sunday
and Monday.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.

NEWS ALERT : Wintergreen Property Owners Association Notified Of Eminent Domain Suit By Atlantic Coast Pipeline

Wintergreen
Nelson County, Virginia

By Tommy Stafford

For the second time in less than a week the ACP has notified additional landowners it will use eminent domain lawsuits to get access to property. This time it’s The Wintergreen Property Owners Association. Generally speaking WPOA is the homeowner’s association that maintains streets and takes care of the the properties at Wintergreen and Stoney Creek in the valley. WPOA also provides all police and fire protection to its property owners. It owns a large amount of property in and around the resort.

A few days ago ACP filed suit against the owners of The Fenton Inn located near the entrance to Wintergreen Resort.

Friday afternoon Jay Roberts, Executive Director of WPOA released the following statement. Here it is verbatim:

“Dominion Energy notified Wintergreen Property Owners’ Association (WPOA) that, based on the legal authority given to it by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), it was filing suit in Federal court on Friday, February 9 for condemnation of WPOA property. WPOA has repeatedly and publicly stated our opposition to the location of the pipeline. However, based on the law of eminent domain and the history of these cases in Federal Court, we expect that a court of law will grant the access necessary for the project to proceed.

We respect the legal process and are focused on addressing the concerns of our owners through Dominion’s agreement to participate in a formal mediated process that will include the financial and non-financial implications placed on the community by the presence of the pipeline. WPOA is committed to the best possible outcome for our community; one that provides fair treatment and security for our owners, employees and guests.

Friends of Wintergreen, one of many groups strongly opposing the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP), revealed late Tuesday night that the ACP has filed their first eminent domain suit against the owners of The Fenton Inn. The relatively new B & B is just beyond the Wintergreen Resort gatehouse on the left as you head up Route 664 to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

News of the eminent domain lawsuit comes a day after the Nelson Board of Zoning Appeals unanimously dismissed the ACP’s request for floodplain variances on seven properties.

Snow Hits Area Then Turns To Rainy Mess (Video)

Snow fell across the area on Sunday morning quickly covering the ground and roadways. However, by early afternoon temperatures had risen just enough to to turn everything to a slushy mess. For a few hours folks living in the Blue Ridge got to see a pretty nice snowfall Sunday morning.

Above what Route 151 nearing Brent’s Gap looked like around 10:15 Sunday morning – February 4, 2018.

Photo courtesy of Mandi Smack : Several accidents happened across the area as the snow began. This was one of them on Route 151 near Sunrise Drive. The driver of this truck lost control and flipped on its side. Sunday – February 4, 2018.

As the snow turned to rain widespread rain settled in. By mid afternoon Sunday our BRL-Maple Brook Farm station had already picked up about .60″ of rain with plenty still falling.

The rain will end early evening but gusty colder winds will follow. MOnday will be sunny but bluster with temps only in the mid and upper 30s with gusty northerly winds. Milder with more rain by midweek.
