Nelson County, Virginia

Rescue crews are pulling out of the search and believe the hiker has made it to safety in the Afton area. That’s the only info we have at this time.
Original post below:
Rescue and law enforcement teams are trying to reach an, apparent, injured hiker along the Appalachian Trail (AT) as of 5:15 PM.
An original call stated someone had been attacked by a bear and nearby hikers said they heard someone screaming, “Stop!”
None of this has been confirmed and the hiker has not been located as of the original post. Numerous crews are working the area and a helicopter is in the area looking and may be used to hoist the victim out.
We have inquires in, but many are on the scene and out of range or too busy.
It’s also noteworthy, bear attacks are extremely rare in Virginia, and none have been reported in Nelson, as far as our research has shown, in the last 50 years.
This is a fluid story and we will update as soon as we have more info.
