In spite of the nasty weather hundreds turned out for the Be Bold 4 Miler held this past Saturday morning at Bold Rock Cidery in Nellysford. Temps hovered in the mid 30s with a mix of snow and rain falling, but that didn’t stop folks from coming out, making the run, and having lots of fun in the process!
Blue Ridge Life Magazine has been a charter sponsor of the Corkscrew Racing series since it began years ago.
The next race in the Corkscrew series is the Be BOLD Orchard 5K at Bold Rock Tap Room May 26th at Carter Mountain Orchard in Charlottesville. Click here for details and see you there!
Photo courtesy of Jason Pugh – Wintergreen Fire & Rescue : About 1.5 ” of snow fell on Saturday – April 7, 2018 of this past weekend at Wintergreen Resort. Though it didn’t really stick to the roads very much, there was some light accumulation on the grassy areas.
By 5 PM Thursday of this coming week temperatures across Central Virginia will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s across the region.
The snow will be a distant memory later this week as much warmer weather is headed our way. It’s very likely that some locations just south of Nelson will see 80° toward the end of the week. Everyone will see mid and upper 70s for sure.
We still have a bump or two to get over early this week, but the weather turns around pretty quickly after that.

The Wintergreen Rescue Squad has completed an initiative to equip every ambulance in Nelson County with “Nasal Narcan” to save lives of persons who have either intentionally or accidentally overdosed on opioids.
According to Chief of EMS Operations Mike Riddle, Nelson County hasn’t seen an uptick in opioid-related medical calls. Nonetheless, the national data suggests it could become a problem.
Riddle says, “A severe opioid overdose doesn’t afford you much time to react. The patient needs Narcan, and they need it quickly. Without it, they may stop breathing”
Every ambulance in the region has carried Narcan for quite some time, however in a different form. Nasal Narcan can be given by virtually any first-responder regardless of their training level. In the past only Advanced Providers could administer Narcan via injection.
Chief of Wintergreen Fire & Rescue, Curtis Sheets stated the grant to provide the Narcan kits came from the Virginia Department of Health, Office of EMS. Specifically, there is a program called Rescue Squad Assistance Fund designed to assist with these types of initiatives.
According to Sheets, “For this particular initiative it was just as easy for us to go ahead an apply to equip every ambulance in the County as it would have been to have only focused on our fleet.”
Typically grants through the Virginia Office of EMS require the applicant to match a portion of the funding. In an effort to get out in front of the opioid crisis, Virginia is offering rare 100% funding.

Very often it’s hard to get anyone locally with the right expertise to fix a refrigeration unit in the brewing industry here in Nelson. Or find a welder with the right skills to help manufacture something in one of the many vineyards, breweries, cideries, or distilleries. East Nelson Board of Supervisor Jesse Rutherford went on a mission to bring a program to the county that will actually train people here in those trade fields. The program will also train students on how to grow food used in the food and beverage / agri business. It will be a satellite arm of PVCC on site at food and beverage locations in Nelson.
“It’s a great start in the right direction. This will help stop having to import workers into Nelson to fill jobs that would otherwise might have to come from other parts of the world. Some of the skilled tradespeople have come from as far away as France to work on the equipment here,” Rutherford tells us.
Above, just a few of the many letters of local support for the program from various hospitality organizations and vineyard / brewing operations.
Once the final details are completed students involved in the satellite classes will be able to work and train at specific faciltites in Nelson to learn the skills needed in the industry.
Two specific Nelson operations will be participating in the joint venture with PVCC. Additional details on those plans will be revealed soon.
