Hot and humid weather didn’t stop folks from coming out for the annual Lovingston 4th of July parade held Wednesday morning. Folks lined the streets to check out all of the entires! Nelson County Parks & Recreation and Lovingston Volunteer Fire Department, along with support from the County of Nelson hosted the 2018 parade.

Laurel Hill Road
Augusta County, VA
Verbatim release via VSP: At 10:24 p.m., Tuesday, Virginia State Police Trooper T.L. Johnson responded to a fatal pedestrian crash in Augusta County. The crash occurred July 3, 2018, on Laurel Hill Road at the intersection of Dunsmore Road.
A 2010 Chevrolet Impala was traveling east on Laurel Hill Road when it struck a female pedestrian walking in the roadway.
The pedestrian, Wanda K. Kramer, 41, of Verona, Va., died at the scene.
The driver of the Impala, Jeffery S. Lakatos, 50, of Waynesboro, Va., was not injured in the crash. Lakatos was arrested for DUI/manslaughter and was transported to Middle River Regional Jail.
The crash remains under investigation

With the 4th of July being right in the middle of the week this year, Wintergreen Resort held their annual fireworks display one night early on the 3rd so folks in town for just the 4th would have a chance to see them!

the mid 90s, and dewpoints in the low to mid 70s.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A Heat Advisory means that a period of high temperatures is
expected. The combination of high temperatures and high humidity
will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke

“Virginia State Police Trooper T.M. Skehan is investigating a fatal crash in Nelson County on the Blue Ridge Parkway approximately 5.4 miles south of Route 814. The crash occurred Saturday (June 30) at 4 p.m.
A 2005 Toyota 4Runner that was traveling along the Blue Ridge Parkway when it first ran off the right side of the highway. The vehicle swerved back to the left, crossed over the highway, ran off the left side of the road and struck several trees.
The driver, Reid D. Ostrander, 65, of Fancy Gap, Va., died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.
The crash remains under investigation.

The following is from Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets:
“At approximately 4PM Wintergreen Fire & Rescue and Montebello Fire Department were dispatched to a motor vehicle crash at milepost 21 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just South of Twenty-Minute Cliffs. This area has little to no cellular coverage and therefore initial dispatch information was not correct. Our crews were told there were multiple serious pediatric injuries with entrapment and the vehicle was over the edge. Based upon this, Wintergreen Fire & Rescue assigned one fire engine, two ambulances, one heavy-rescue truck, members of the technical rescue team, as well as one supervisor on the call. An additional ambulance was requested from Waynesboro First Aid Crew. Upon arrival crews found a single vehicle rollover off the side of the road with heavy entrapment and a single occupant fatality. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Virginia State Police and the Blue Ridge Park Police.”

Emergency crews and law enforcement are working a rollover auto accident on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the vicinity of milepost 22. The crash is believed to be serious.
Expect major delays and possible road closures. Use an alternate route if at all possible.

Piney River
Nelson County, Virginia
Folks in the south part of Nelson County and Northern Amherst County won’t have to drive as far any longer to get some everyday items. The latest Dollar General store opened there this week after several months of construction. The new store is at the corner of Lowesville Road and Route 151 where the old Raines TV store used to be.
The Piney River DG joins the Nellysford store that opened a few months ago.

Albemarle County, Virginia
Hope’s Legacy Equine Rescue has been finding new homes and hope for equines since 2008. Over 160 Virginian horses, donkeys, mules, miniature horses and ponies have benefited from their services in rescue, rehabilitation and adoption. The efforts of this vital community resource are being recognized with a 10th Anniversary Party on August 18th at the Barn at Turkey Ridge, Charlottesville, Virginia.
Many people first heard of Hope’s Legacy when they took in a combined 48 horses from the Peaceable Farm and Nottoway county seizures in 2015 and 2016. “The public hears about these large seizures, but they don’t hear about the daily calls we receive from private citizens,” said Maya Proulx, Hope’s Legacy’s founder and Executive Director. “The human issues you see in the news every day can result in an equine needing help.”
Calls for the Rescue’s services continue to increase, and there’s just not enough space at equine rescues around Virginia, or around the country. To help address that need, Hope’s Legacy purchased 172 acres near Batesville in November 2017, and is building a farm from the ground up. Called Castle Rock Farm, this new permanent home will allow Hope’s Legacy to house 40% more horses.
The 10th Anniversary Party is a fundraising event which will feature a silent auction and raffle, along with a photo booth, music, food and special equine guests. All proceeds will support the 25+ horses and donkeys in residence at Hope’s Legacy, and will go toward the Castle Rock Farm land payment for 2018. Sponsors and major donors include Southwest Airlines, Gray Fox Land and Estate Management and Triple Crown Nutrition.

Founded by husband-and-wife team Kate and Ethan Zuckerman, Blue Ridge Bucha has
been a staple of the local food and beverage scene since 2010. The kombucha brewery will now open its
doors (and taps) to the public starting this Saturday, June 30th from 12:00pm to 6:00pm. Says Ethan, “We are excited to be able to interact directly with customers in our own space. It will be a unique, family-friendly place to hang out that will showcase the high quality products and sustainable local ethos that our company is all about.” The taproom will offer growler fills and compostable cups full of the company’s delicious Certified Organic kombucha flavors, including limited release flavors that will be available at the taproom only. A curated selection of snack and non-bucha beverage options will be available, too–all from local purveyorswithin a 100 mile radius of the taproom, such as Farmstead Ferments Krauts, Trager Brothers Coffee, Gearharts Chocolates, Good Phyte Food bars, Snowing In Space Nitro Cold Brew, and more.
Located on the east side of Waynesboro near Rockfish Gap Outfitters and Basic City Beer, the kombucha
taproom is just two miles from I-64, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the Appalachian Trail. Its convenient
location, kids play area, free wifi, and indoor/outdoor layout make it a hangout spot for just about any
occasion this summer. The rustic, eco-salvaged décor of the new spot is a perfect complement to the
company’s tagline: big flavor. small footprint. Says Kate, “I am so proud of the work Ethan has done in
making this old building come to life again. He’s built most of our brewery equipment from scratch, so
renovating this space on a tight budget using reclaimed materials is a challenge he was up for. We up-cycled our glass pallets and created a homemade wood stain using the tea from our kombucha, which is a fun and unique process that highlights our commitment to reusing resources. We look forward to curating a great experience for visitors, and we have plans to evolve the concept further in the coming months.” According to the Zuckermans, Blue Ridge Bucha has plans to host events, tours, and food trucks in the near future, but has not yet decided on the date for its Grand Opening Party.
