Tye River
Nelson – Amherst County Line
Colleen, Virginia

Last week work was completed on the removal of the Tye River Dam just east of U.S. 29 at the Amherst / Nelson County Line. The mill dam was owned roughly 100 years ago by the late William Knight Smiley of Lynchburg. Years later it was inherited by his daughter Elizabeth “Bess” Quinn of Charlottesville in the 1950’s In 1969 it was abandoned and badly damaged by Hurricane Camille.

“I’m certain that somewhere Bess is smiling today,” says Rebecca Quinn, daughter of the late Bess Quinn. She, her sister, and two brothers own the dam today.

Above workers clear the Tye River of the old dam that’s plugged it up for nearly a century.

Alan Weaver of the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries, points to the construction material used decades ago to build the old dam. “The family that owned it was the Quinn family. So we removed Quinn Dam from the river. The reason for it is to provide fish passage for resident and migratory fish and to restore the stream habitat above the dam. Instead of being shallow and slow moving it will be a natural flowing stream,” says Alan.

Above ribbons of rebar used to strengthen the old dam are tossed on the banks of the Tye to free up the river.

free flowing
Now the river can flow freely as it originally did prior to the dam being built.

To learn more about this and projects like it you can visit The American Rivers website or The Virginia Organizing Project website. Both helped coordinate the dam removal. American Rivers along with USDA’s Natural Resource Conversation Service paid for the work.

You can read more about the restoration project in the September issue of NCL out in late August.

Nelson Farmers Market
Nellysford, Virginia

You read about him in the publisher’s statement on page 5 of the current issue of Nelson County Life Magazine. This past weekend Jerky decided to show his face in public just to let folks know he’s not ashamed over that little carcass incident last month during the thunderstorm.

Jerky, Bev Keith, Sarah & Yvette
Jerky is quite the dog. Like most of us he enjoys having a cup of coffee and a scone before starting his day.

Milly, Jerky, Yvette
Jerky has become a bit of a social dog due to all of his exposure in the magazine. Here Milly Colella of Nellysford stops to ask Jerky for an autograph.

Jerky kid pet
Knowing that his popularity began long ago as a puppy with kids petting him, he never gets too arrogant. Jerky loves kids and always makes time for a pet or a head scratch.

Jerky in Tent
Though Jerky is very outgoing and much the social dog, he was a bit overwhelmed by all of the attention and folks at this weekend’s market. He just decided to plop right down in the middle of the tent and watch! No thunder and no carcasses!

Rodes Farm Sunrise

What a near perfect weekend we had across Central Virginia and Nelson County. Faithful NCL web readers Henri & Elaine Weems caught the shot above and sent it to us. What a beautiful sunrise with the horse’s silhouette in the foreground. Got to see both of them Saturday night at Veritas’ Starry Nights. Thanks for the great photo!

This week will still be warm, but not the 102.8 degrees we saw last Friday. We’ll see plenty of 90’s this week, but I’ll take that! Very isolated thunderstorms are in the forecast for this afternoon. We’ll have some humidity this week, but again not as bad as last week. A series of cold fronts will move across the area this week, but we’ll pretty much remain dry. They will help keep the temps in the 90’s vs 100’s.

I am keeping an eye on a developing low off the coast of Africa that has been showing continued development. If it holds together it could impact our weather over the next 10 days. Just keeping tabs. NWS computer runs & discussion show it in the Caribbean by next week.

“Models continue to develop the low coming off west CST of Africa and move it
into Caribbean next weekend.”

Hot Chickens!
Roseland, Virginia

Hot chicken

What a rock & roll day Thursday was. We had a little bit of everything. Above, Heidi Crandall of Roseland, who’s been shooting a few pics for us from time to time, sent this one in last night. In her words:

“My children asked how the chickens pant- with their beaks open!!”

Wouldn’t argue with that one a bit Heidi!

Yesterday was certainly a day for the chickens and the humans to pant. Like Wednesday, we broke 100 + in many places. We topped Wednesday’s high here at our office in Greenfield at 102! All of the NCL-Weathernet stations (except obviously Wintergreen Nature Foundation on Devil’s Knob at 3500 feet!) topped the century mark on Thursday. (see totals below) Phil D’Ambola of D’Ambolas Restaurant up the road e-mailed in to say he even topped 100 degrees there as well. Not a good day to sit on the deck Phil! Bet this weekend will be a better one though!!

Additionally, as I thought and predicted on Thursday, we saw some severe weather in the area, even a tornado warning to the east in neighboring Albemarle. Late last night up to midnight we heard thunder in many parts of Nelson with lightning lighting up the sky way late.

Today will be a day of transition as we head toward better weather for the weekend. Until the front gets clear of the area we’ll still have chances for scattered storms. Skies will be partly sunny at times. We’ll still have enough sun to make the 90’s again today.

Here are the HOT numbers as of 11:59 PM EDT Thursday night

*NCL-Nelson County Life Magazine : Greenfield / Afton
Thurs High: 102.6 degrees @ 4:08 PM
0.04″ of rain

*NCL-Wintergreen Nature Foundation : Devil’s Knob

The current surface map shows a frontal boundary working through the area today. Scattered thunderstorms.
Current-Sat Surface Map

On the National Forecast Map, behind the front cooler and less humid air works in for the weekend. We can’t rule out some hit & miss thunderstorms today as the front moves through, but conditions will be improving over the next 24 hours.
Today’s Forecast Map

Local forecast
*Friday Early morning fog. Partly sunny, slightly cooler with temps in the 90’s. Widely scattered thunderstorms across 40% of the area early before late afternoon.
*High temps in Roseland, Stoney Creek & Tyro 94 degrees.
*On the mountains above 2000 feet along the BRP, Wintergreen, Three Ridges, Devil’s Knob, and Love, Early morning patchy fog, then partly sunny. Milder with widely scattered thunderstorms.
Highs top out around 82 degrees.
Winds SW in the morning shifting N in the afternoon 4-6 MPH

*Friday night Partly to mostly cloudy & seasonal, early evening scattered showers or a t-storm.
*Lows valley around 63 degrees.
*On the mountains overnight low of 60.
*Winds Light N overnight.

Over the weekend look for sunny skies and temps cooling into the upper 80’s and less humid. Overnight lows, low & mid 60’s. Slightly cooler mountains. Overnight lows at Wintergreen Mountain cooling to around 60 by Sunday night. Daytime mountain highs around 80.

Remember when severe weather or news breaks out, come here. We’ll have all of the latest watches, warnings, and coverage affecting Nelson County, Wintergreen, and nearby counties.

Have a great Weekend!
