Media Day @ Walton’s Mountain Museum
Schuyler, Virginia

Patrick Living Room
Patrick O’Brian, with Walton’s Mountain Museum shows off one of the popular attractions there, a replica of the original living room from the television series, The Waltons, which aired from 1972 to 1981.

This weekend The Walton’s Mountain Museum kicked off it’s 2008 season. The last day of February, the museum held a media day for an advanced look at the museum and upcoming events for this year. Everyone was very nice and they had lots of yummy food while we hung out, took pictures, & talked!

Sara @ TWNF 2007
Sara Ott at The Wintergreen Nature Foundation Golf Tourney Last Fall

Seems like I’ve been doing this way too much lately. This morning while eating at the RVCC Pancake Breakfast, I was told that Nelson’s, Sara Ott, died in the past day. Most of you are familiar with Sara and those of us that have come to know her, know this last year wasn’t an easy one for her, but she kept smiling and kept going! My last time to visit with Sara was just a few days ago on the parking lot of Wintergreen True Value Hardware in Nellysford. She was the same Sara, laughing, and already talking about the upcoming golf tourney this fall!

Here’ a few preliminary arrangements sent to us via Ray Ashton in Stoney Creek:

A Memorial service for Sara will be held on Monday, March 3 at the Mountain Inn
at 3 p.m.. A reception will follow at the Stoney Creek Bar & Grill.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either
the Wintergreen Nature Foundation or the Wintergreen Rescue Squad.

We will pass on additional details as we have them.

Please keep Frank, her husband, and their entire family in your thoughts and prayers.

As promised The Red Drum Ramblers take out with Honey Babes from their CD cut in February of 2008 @ Jess & Jen’s.

Have a great Weekend everyone!

Here’s how Jace describes the makeup of The Red Drum Ramblers in his own humorous words!

Hi Tommy,
Wow! That fiddle will blast open your eyelids faster than yesterday’s coffee re-heated over an open flame, eh?!
I caught the initial Red Drum Ramblers offering this morning, and wanted to contact and update you Here’s the scoop: The Red Drum Ramblers are Jace Goodling (fiddle and vocals) and Tim Scruby (pronounced just like it’s spelled, kind of rhyming with Scooby, as in …Doo, but with an “R” thrown in) clawhammer banjo. That’s our “normal” line-up. We are both actually certifiable “Natives” to the area. Tim grew up in Waynesboro and lives just over the county line (on the Albemarle side) in Afton. I grew up in an apple orchard just on the other side of Batesville and have lived the last twenty one years in Afton. (You know the story: grew up, went to college, learned “go west, young man”, and made it seven miles to Afton….been here ever since)
For this recording, we were fortunate enough to have our good friend and excellent musician, Jesse Fiske, accompanying us on guitar and harmonica. Jesse is one of the original members of the band, “The Hackensaw Boys” from Charlottesville, currently touring all around the western part of the United States. Jesse did the recording for us at his house (thus the note, “Jess and Jen’s” on the CD,,,, his girlfriend, Jen Fleish, plays acoustic dog house bass for “Jim Waive and The Young Divorcees”). We’ve actually never recorded an official CD, as in a commercial venture worthy of commerce and trade, so you have the “original”…..and as I mentioned, they’re all “one takes”: something that Monkeyclaus folks probably shudder to think about. HA! But even if there is some demented soul out there that would want to hear more of our music, he’d have to come see us “Live”. In addition to the Nelson Farmers’ Market, we perform at Stone Soup Cafe, a neat little book store/ cafe’ on Main street in Waynesboro. We’re also available for house parties and barn dances. We play “old time” music, NOT blue grass, and we like to stay fairly loyal to the old time mountain music songs as we learned them: ragged but right.
Thanks much,
Jace

Okay, before starting have to help out our buddy Dave Makel over at Trailer Buff down the road here in Greenfield. Dave was listening to our Tuesday cast earlier this week where we were using this track of music to go out of our weather with. (music plays) You’ve all heard me do that before and when we don’t have a featured local musician we use that kind of generic stuff. So Dave tells Yvette Wednesday that he loves the jazz piano style music from that day and it had to be someone very good! Uh, yea, Dave they probably were, but since that comes standard with our music bed on the software I use to do the cast with, I can’t tell you who it is, but I can tell you it’s called: Fifth Avenue Stroll from our Mac Garageband Collection! Seriously, if you liked that one, I think you’ll like the one I’ll go out with today as well. And who says we don’t do special requests!

Also want to say howdy this morning to Keith Smith and his wife Sharon a few thousand feet up at Royal Oaks Cabins on the BRP in Love, VA. Keith just got his internet configured to where he can now listen to us each day. They have a great place up there and we appreciate you joining in to listen.

Somebody left the freezer door open Wednesday & Wednesday night. Man did it get cold! We only touched the 40° mark for an afternoon high in some locations and on the mountains they never made it out of the mid 20’s. As you can see in the photo above, snow showers were all around the area for the entire day with some of them pretty heavy at times like the one we caught in Beech Grove late Wednesday afternoon. They didn’t create any problems, but did remind us winter is still very much around. Overnight last night many areas reached the single digits even before midnight making for a very, very cold night.

If you want warmer weather you won’t have to wait very long. After a cold Thursday we moderate a little Friday and then make it to the 50’s by the weekend. We’re talking lower 60’s by Monday, we just have to hang on a few days. Right now it looks like temps stay relatively mild next week, at least for the first half of the week.

Also want to send out good luck wishes tonight to the NCHS Boy’s Basketball Team. Our faithful NCL web reader, Judy Serkes over at Woods Mill let us know the team – (25-1) – will play against Altavista tonight, Feb. 28th at 7:00 PM at Amherst County High School in the Region B Div 1 semifinal game.
Those guys are doing great so far and we wish them another win tonight. And thanks to Judy who’s apparently become our sports reporter for keeping us up to date!

You Are Invited to the 13th Annual Vince Fiore
Memorial Mardi Gras Celebration!
Saturday, March 1, 2008

Our annual fund raiser puts the fun in fund raising! It is a day and night of costumed foolery, starting on the slopes in the morning and winding up in the evening with our one and only Thrift Store Formal. During the day, we strut our stuff down the mountain with a costumed parade followed by gumbo for lunch on the WAS deck. The afternoon is filled with tubing races and the wildly competitive, utterly silly Synchronized Ski Contest. That evening, dressed to the nines in our choicest thrift store finery, we convene at the Rockfish Valley VFD for the truly tasty Cajun Banquet followed by the Thrift Store Formal.

MG-2H

This special event is in honor of the first student of WAS, Vince Fiore. He was an avid skier, and the fact that he had only one leg did not dampen his enthusiasm for the skiing fast! The funds raised on this day are a major source of the money needed to purchase and repair adaptive equipment, for instructor training and overall administration of the WAS program.Image

The Mardi Gras Celebration is for everyone: our disabled students, our volunteers, friends, families and anyone who wants to support this worthwhile cause with a donation.

We are offering prizes for the top three fundraisers at our Mardi Gras Celebration. The grand prize is a ski trip for two to Breckenridge, CO! The prize includes airfare, ground transportation, lodging and lift tickets. Second and third place winners will receive a complete set of ski or snowboard equipment.

$125 minimum donation gets you a lift ticket, equipment rental, and all the fun activities of the day as well as the Cajun Dinner and formal.

$50 donation for the Dinner and Formal.

$25 donation for the Formal only.
