Thanks to Jeff Stone over at Wintergreen Winery for today’s weather photo. This is another really great sunset, think this one is at Three Ridges. We’ve been having some spectacular ones lately, and appreciate Jeff sending this one our way!
The weather over the weekend was pretty much as forecast, warm and dry with no rain.
Today we’ll have chances for isolated afternoon thunderstorms as a cold front works through the area, passing to our south, stalling, then returning as a warm front later in the week. This keeps chances for thunderstorms in the forecast off and on starting Wednesday. If remnants of Fay make her way here, that will interact with the front giving us better chances for much needed rain.
We also continue to watch two other tropical disturbances out in the Atlantic for possible impact on U.S. weather by next weekend.
Temperatures remain pleasant in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s after today’s readings in the 90’s.

Thanks to Ann Strober for this weekend’s weather photo of the sun setting behind the mountains just outside of Nellysford. Ann has become quite the photo taker with her new Nikon!
Also, howdy to Ray Aston who listens every morning! Ray stopped me earlier this week and was wondering what was happening with our audio on Wednesday morning. Any of you with satellite internet know what problems it can be, we’re there! But thanks for listening every morning Ray!
And be sure to make it over to the Hamner Theater this weekend in the RVCC, for their event benefiting SK8 Nelson, that the bunch working to establish a skate park here. You can read the flier above for more info or click here for details.
Continue to remind you about the Crutchfield Electronics Recycling Truck that will be at the Rockfish Valley Community Center on Saturday September 6th from 9 AM to 3PM. That’s a week from this weekend, the same day as the monthly pancake breakfast. You see the information on the left hand side of your screen right under the cover of our magazine, just click on that Crutchfield image to get a larger version of the information. This is a really neat way to get rid of all of those old electronics including, old televisions, radios, air conditioners, to just mention a few!
Unfortunately, we don’t have any good prospects for rain this weekend. All indicators are showing Tropical Storm Fay hooking left and heading away from us in the next couple of days.
Our next, best chance for rain arrives Monday with a cold front that will eventually stall over the region keeping chances for rain in the forecast for most of the first part of next week.
For the immediate weekend ahead, look for partly to mostly sunny skies and dry conditions.

For the past several several days we’ve had those kinds of sunrises and sunsets Henri captured, as skies have stayed mostly clear with warm to hot days and mild nights. So far for the month of August we have only seen .18″ of rain here at the office n Greenfield, and other locations the same. You don’t need a weather guy to tell you that it’s become very, very dry lately.
Look for the dry weather to continue right on into the weekend. Showers return next week, hopefully, by Monday.

Hurricane Camille Historic Marker Dedication
Near Nellysford, Virginia

Connie Brennan, Central District Supervisor, (left) loosens the straps from a cover on Nelson’s newest historic marker remembering August 20, 1969, the date when a catastrophic category 5 hurricane hit the county killing dozens. Ann Andres, from The Virginia Department of Historic Resources, right, helps take the cover off. Just behind the shroud is John Redick, president of the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation.

It was 39 years ago today that Nelson County was hit by devastating Hurricane Camille. Over a hundred people lost their lives statewide, dozens here in Nelson, in the category 5 hurricane that forever changed Nelson County. Yesterday, Peter Agelasto and others unveiled a historic marker just off Route 151 South of Spruce Creek on the banks of the Rockfish River near Elk Hill. (see accompanying story in current August issue of NCL page 41) It was at that very spot near the Rockfish River Bridge that Ed Ewing and his wife were killed in the raging flood waters coming down from the mountains. The marker is in addition to others in the county memorializing the event.
We certainly won’t see anything like Camille in our area today, and it still looks like Fay is not going to affect our weather. The present thinking is high pressure will keep the storm from making into Virginia, rather pushing it to our south and west. We’ll keep you posted if she heads this way.
Look for temperatures to moderate a bit for the rest of the week leaving behind the 90’s we’ve seen for the past two to three days. Chances for rain (excluding Fay if she moved this way) will reappear around Monday.

The summer performing season is slowly winding down as Wintergreen Performing Arts held it’s 3rd Annual Mountain Music Festival this past weekend. Talk about some great music, they had acts from all over the place and many of them performed to a packed house with standing ovations. The Deer Creek Boys from Amherst seen in the photo above, were just one of the performances that had people stomping their feet and clapping their hands!
We started off the week with a hot one as temps neared or slightly crept into the lower 90’s for afternoon highs.
All eyes are on Fay and wondering where she will go. As of early Tuesday the current thinking is that high pressure will keep her from making it into Central Virginia giving us some rain, but I can tell you , nobody has a clue what this storm will really do by week’s end. We’ll have to see which way she takes off over the next day or so.
Otherwise look for partly to mostly sunny skies for the remainder of the week with afternoon temps in the moderating to the low 80’s bay the second half of the week. If Fay makes it up here, that would mean rain by Thursday or Friday.

Oakland Museum of Nelson History Opens
Arrington, Virginia

Oakland Museum Board President, Beth Goodwin, officially opens the museum to the crowd of over 200 this past Sunday afternoon.
After years in the making, Oakland Museum of Nelson County History, opened it’s doors this past Sunday afternoon to a huge crowd attending the ceremonies on the lawn of the museum.

Above, Greg Kelly, with CVEC shows a couple about the history of electric power in Nelson County, Virginia. It is part of an exhibit called “Cuttin’ On the Lights,†showing how electricity came to the county in the 1930s and the impact it had on people’s lives.

Woody Greenberg, (right) VP of The Oakland Museum Board, chats it up with many of the people dropping by for their first look at the newly completed museum.

One of the larger attractions in the museum is a complete room dedicated to the historic hurricane of 1969, Camille. Many never-before-seen color photos taken just after the 1969 flood were unveiled.

Another exhibit on the ground floor shows what the old tavern built in 1838 might have looked like. The museum was originally built as a tavern before it was a residence.

Folks line up out front the listen to music, have a few refreshments and then head inside for a look at the new museum.
The grand opening also included a ceremony marking the inclusion of Oakland on both the national and Virginia registries of historic places. Kathleen Kilpatrick, Director of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources was the keynote speaker.
You can learn lots more information, along with hours of operation by heading on over to the Oakland Museum website by clicking here.
