As we first told you here, folks living in Nelson County, Virginia have become quite enraged about not being able to receive Charlottesville local broadcast channels if you are not on cable. Those people who aren’t in a good enough location to receive the signal by regular television antenna (very few can) must use either DirecTV or Dish Network to get television reception. And if you live in Nelson, you see Roanoke / Lynchburg stations vs more relevant Charlottesville stations.

Even the general manager, Harold Wright, of NBC-29 chimed in on the discussion:

The Charlottesville television stations are well-aware of the situation in Nelson County.

Nelson County is listed as part of the Roanoke-Lynchburg Designated Market Area (DMA) because according to the television ratings company, Nielsen, Nelson Co households watch Roanoke-Lynchburg stations 29% of the time, and Charlottesville stations only 11% of the time (2008 County Summary for Virginia).

Nielsen is the sole arbiter of market assignment, and their definitions and analyses are used by the FCC for determining which stations may be carried by cable systems, DirecTV, and DISH.

The statement that those homes using antennas will lose coverage when the analog stations cease broadcasting, Feb 17, 2009, is not necessarily correct. Many digital stations have “maximized” their power and therefore, will provide a stronger signal from their digital transmitter. In the case of WVIR-TV the digital “footprint” reaches about 10 miles farther than the analog footprint.

If you are presently receiving a viewable analog signal from WVIR-TV, then it is likely that you will receive the station’s digital signal. And the good news is, if you receive the digital picture it will be perfect…no snow, and no ghosting.

I am going to emphasize that this is not just an inconvenience or disadvantage but a downright danger for us to be denied access to vital local information because of some stupid policy, esp. given our inadequate broadband access in rural Nelson.

Like Cindi said about her daughter being alone w/ a criminal on the loose, I know that I wouldn’t even have known about the bank robbery on Tuesday if I hadnt been online at work w/ access to Nelson County Life!

Chamber Business Networking Held In Nellysford

The Nelson County Chamber of Commerce and Taylor Made Business Service co-sponsored a networking get together this past week at The Dogwood Restaurant in Nellysford. It gave area business people a chance to mingle with one another in a light atmosphere.

A drawing was held near the end of the event for several door prizes. Above, Ginger Drumheller, of Wachovia Bank in Nellysford, pulls out a business card from a basket being held by Michelle Taylor of Taylor Made Business Service. Ironically, Ginger picked her own card the first time around! Not to worry, she put it back and pulled another!

The driver of a motorcycle is being treated for injuries suffered from this afternoon’s wreck along Rt. 151 near Bland Wade Ln. in Afton. According to witnesses, the motorcycle was headed southbound on Rt. 151 when he locked his breaks as a motorist in front of him prepared to make a left hand turn onto his driveway. The motorcycle then hit a red Nissan pickup truck headed northbound. Skidmarks several yards long, just south of Afton Family Medical Center, could be seen on the pavement. Virginia State Police are investigating the accident as local crews direct rush hour traffic.

PVCC “Ideas” Forum at Nelson County High School

NELSON COUNTY RESIDENTS, BUSINESSES INVITED
TO SHARE IDEAS WITH PVCC AT FORUM

Piedmont Virginia Community College is hosting a Forum on Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m. at Nelson County High School to help determine how PVCC can best serve Nelson County residents and businesses now and in the years ahead.

College representatives will be there to listen to ideas and answer questions. A drawing for a free PVCC class valued at $266 will be held and light refreshments will be served.

“Nelson County is part of PVCC’s service region,” noted Frank Friedman, PVCC president, “so at this Forum the College wants to learn first-hand from residents and businesses about their educational needs and the future educational needs of their children and employees. We’re interested in hearing what types of classes, training and services are desired, either on PVCC’s campus, in Nelson County or through the Internet.”

Friedman noted that a PVCC student and Nelson County resident, Jacob Neal, was named the top community college student in Virginia and one of the top 20 in the nation last academic year. Nearly 300 Nelson County residents took PVCC classes as new or returning students during the 2006-07 academic year. Of those, 85 percent attended part time.

Monday began more or less cloudy with some breaks of sun. Areas to the south had some light showers until early afternoon when skies turned partly cloudy. With the cloud cover temps stayed cool for much of the day only topping in the 70’s valley and low 60’s on the mountains.

Over the next several days right on through the weekend, look for mostly sunny days with mild temperatures during the day and pleasant cool temps at night. No organized rainfall is on the horizon for the next 7 days.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Department has released a surveillance image of the man they say held up the BB&T Bank in Afton Tuesday afternoon, around 12:21pm. The suspect is described as a male (race unknown), approximately 6 ft. tall, last seen wearing camouflage head to toe. The suspect fled on foot, hopping over a barbed wire fence behind the bank.

An aerial and land man hunt earlier in the day turned up no leads. Authorities say no one was injured or hurt in the robbery. Sheriff David Brooks is asking people with any information to call the department at 434-263-7050.

According to Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks, a helicopter is on its way to assist in the search for this afternoon’s BB&T Bank robbery suspect. Though previously described as black, authorities now tell us the suspect could be black or white. He is described as a male, 6 ft. tall, dressed in full camouflage, possibly wearing an orange mask. He may be armed. Sheriff Brooks is asking people to report suspicious activity to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Department: 434-263-7050.

After a hot and sticky weekend, temperatures finally cooled a bit on Monday as a front worked through the area. Today should have been a mostly sunny day, but some stubborn moisture from the SE may wedge in here banking up against the mountains keeping a low cloud deck in place, at least for part of the day. I think this is more a problem south in areas around Amherst and Lynchburg, but the mountains can catch that moisture and hold it in place, so we’ll have to see how the day plays out. Any light showers will certainly be more likely south.

NCL’s Diana Garland was in Lovingston Monday as former Democratic Governor and now U.S. Senate Candidate, Mark Warner, made a campaign stop to meet and greet supporters.
