Strong to Severe Severe Storms Likely This Afternoon

0
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of Virginia in the Enhanced Risk area for severe weather this afternoon. Thursday – October 31, 2019

Central Virginia Blue Ridge Area

A potent storm system is developing this Halloween to our west. Conditions are ripe for severe weather this afternoon across a large part of Virginia. The areas just east of the Blue Ridge have a likely chance of seeing some type of severe weather, including very high winds, torrential rains, and even the possibility of tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center has placed almost all of Virginia in and enhanced risk category for severe weather. (Click here to read more of their scientific discussion.)

The local NWS office for our area made mention of the possibility in their morning forecast discussion.

“All the ingredients remain in place for a potentially dangerous
severe weather event tonight.”

Click here to read their entire forecast discussion.

While this is no guarantee of severe weather, the likelihood is high.

Regardless, it will be getting windy the evening into tomorrow morning. Wind Advisories and a High Wind Watch is in effect for many counties as well.

Sadly the time has come, that is if you like those carefree long summer days! Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend. It officially ends at 2AM Sunday morning (November 3, 2019). But for those of us that turn in at a reasonable hour, it’s best to set your clock back one hour before heading to bed Saturday night.

Here’s to that perceived extra hour of sleep we lost last spring!

The Route 250 & 151 intersection remained closed later Friday morning around 11 AM as crews worked to clear and accident there. A large utility truck hauling chicken litter (manure) overturned near the intersection hitting a logging truck in the accident. Traffic is being diverted around the accident onto Goodloe Lane and may eventually be routed up Route 6 West (Afton Mountain Road). Regardless, expect delays in that area for the foreseeable future as the roadway and accident scene get cleared.

Afton
Nelson County, Virginia

Area fire crews responded to a late Saturday afternoon fire in the Afton area along Devlin Road. A storage shed caught fire and was full involved when fire departments arrived.

Smoke could be seen rising from the blaze well away from the actual fire. This is a shot Philip Bubel sent us looking north on Route 151 from the vicinity of Silverback Distillery. Saturday – October 5, 2019

Fire crews quickly got the blaze under control and no injuries were reported as of this post.
