It’s official, Nelson’s 2nd microbrewery is on the way to opening in a little more than a couple of weeks. Within the past day or so Brewmaster, Jason Oliver, of Devils Backbone Brewing Company, fired up the system making the first of what will be countless batches of custom beers turned out at the brewery / restaurant along the road leading up to Wintergreen Resort. “We’re checking everything and making sure the system is working correctly as we begin brewing,” says Jason.

We have been following the development of Nelson’s next microbrewery first here, and most recently here. The restaurant / brewery has a tentative opening of mid November. DBBC will join ,already established, Blue Mountain Brewery in Afton that’s been in operation now for about a year.

Project Preggers :: Results are in!

6

Okay. Just because results are in from the Five Star Health & Fitness/Trailer Buff, Inc. study, doesn’t mean we know how to interpret them.

If you remember, Dave Makel of Afton-based Airstream restoration company Trailer Buff had this brilliant (?) idea to use a set of industrial sized calipers to measure my growing pregnant belly.

Dave Makel adjusts calipers for front-to-back measurement. Pinch!

To make this study legit, our caliper measurements would include side-to-side and front-to-back. Belly circumference would also be measured, as well as … uh … my weight.

For truly accurate results, you need precision-minded professionals like Dave Makel and George Luzaich.

So, we began taking measurements twice weekly beginning with week 24 of my pregnancy. We continued all the way up to the end of week 39, just 4 days before Adam’s due date.

My name is Adam and I was born on my due date weighing in at 8 lbs, 1oz. Go me!

To dumb it down, the results of this ground breaking study show that when you are pregnant, your belly gets bigger and you gain weight. Now, time to dazzle you with graphs!

Belly to back measurements. Ooohhh.

Side to side measurements. Or was it the Dow when those banks were getting bailed out?

Circumference measurements. As baby gets bigger, belly gets bigger!

Weight measurements. 40 lbs of baby phat.

Okay. No more graphs. For inquiring minds, half of the baby phat is gone after a month thanks in large part to the miracle of birth!

Gotta go change a diaper 🙂

David Hall of Nellysford, Virginia was smiling ear to ear Tuesday afternoon as the finishing touches were put on the Skyline Fountain being installed in the first pond as you enter Stoney Creek Golf Course at Wintergreen Resort. The fountain, to be officially unveiled, on November 12th, has been a personal endeavor of David’s over the past several months. A fitting marker as people enter Nellysford, and Stoney Creek. “A lot of golfers will be shooting over the pond. Plus, the metal plaques which cite those who gave donations for the Skyline Fountain will be attached to a marker that day,” said David. He has been the fund raising coordinator securing funds for the fountain. Dustin Kennedy, from Virginia Lake Management Company did the actual fountain installation after resort employees did all of the site and prep work a few days ago.

BPL : Verizon Responds To NCL Inquires Regarding Installation

BPL Crews continue to install on their end while waiting on word from Verizon
BPL Crews continue to install on their end while waiting on word from Verizon

Updated: 11:40 PM EDT: IBEC Responds as well, via comments section.

In the continuing BPL saga in Nelson County, Virginia – Verizon officially responded to NCL’s request for information regarding the status of Verizon finishing their side of the system which will provide internet to the BPL interface that IBEC has installed.

This afternoon we got the following e-mail from Harry Mitchell, Media Affairs for Verizon in Virginia:

From: “Mitchell, Harry J.
Date: October 27, 2008 4:43:48 PM EDT
To: “Tommy Stafford”
Subject: RE: BPL – Verizon Halts activation to IBEC-3

Tommy:

The following captures where we are at this point:

Verizon has worked with broadband-over-powerline providers, including IBEC, to provide connection with them at network interfaces for which there are published IEEE connection standards. In this case, a different network interface has been proposed that we have not worked with before and for which there are no published standards for protecting the telecommunications network from damage possible from direct connection to a power grid. We are evaluating the technology the customer wants to apply, but we have an obligation to protect our network, our employees and others in close proximity from any damaging voltage or current.

I’ve reached out to my Wireless counterpart on your other question.

Thanks,

Harry

The additional reference Mr. Mitchell makes about our question is on the wireless side and is not connected with the current situation on BPL. NCL has been told by several property owners that Verizon Wireless has told them, that plans to expand their digital wireless network into Nelson County have been stopped, and they are scrapping plans to build such a network here. However, with the recent proposed merger of Alltel into Verizon Wireless, that would give the company a presence in selected Nelson locations. No official details of abandoning the plan have been released but numerous property owners, some that were already having site work done, tell NCL that’s the word they got from Verizon and / or it’s contractors. That type of system would have given customers another broadband choice using their wireless network for internet.

AT&T continues their build out in Nelson which began late last year.

Ntelos Wireless continues as well, but with some limited opposition in one area just north of Nellysford, Virginia.

More as we know on both fronts.

Snowflakes? Yep, sure enough! You have to look really, really hard, but throughout early afternoon Monday, a band of light snow flurries has been moving over the Blue Ridge Parkway and Wintergreen Mountain. There was a very light dusting on the decks and walkways headed into the condos there. Obviously this is not anything to write home over, but a certainty that winter is on the horizon! Thanks Paul for the shots!

Colder Weather On Tap For Upcoming Week

By Tommy Stafford : Old Rockfish Post Office : Rockfish, Virginia
By Tommy Stafford : Old Rockfish Post Office : Rockfish, Virginia

Colder weather continues to move into Virginia Monday as a mainly dry cold front works through the area. Clouds are prevalent east of the Blue Ridge with breezy northwesterly winds and very cool, almost cold temps. Light snow flurries may be seen along the BRP as mountain temperatures from the low to upper 30’s have been common as the work week started Monday morning. Sprinkles in the valley, as the front passes. Look for the cool weather to continue through mid-week. By Halloween temperatures moderate in the mid 60’s
