More About Eli Cook:

Eli Cook grew up on the blues: Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, the Wolf, Lightnin’ Hopkins, and Mississippi John Hurt. He first picked up the guitar when he was fourteen, and began his own performance career playing vintage blues, gospel shows, and revivals in Nelson County, Virginia when he was fifteen. (Braving the Blues, Lynchburg News and Advance, Jan. 9, 2003, by Theresa Boyd) His first electric trio, The Red House Blues Band, was formed in 2002 while a junior at Monticello Highschool. Eli was called a ‘blues phenomenon’ by reviewers in near-by Charlottesville: “Featuring fast-fingered guitar and a powerful voice beyond his years, Cook doesn’t need any Robert-Johnson-style pact with the devil to take him to the top.” (Eli Cook’s Red House Blues Band, by Matthew Hirst, C’ville Review, 12/10/2003)

In 2004 internationally reknowned blues bassman Steve Riggs joined Eli’s rhythm section, a veteran of the blues circuit who had played and recorded with Muddy Waters, Jimmy Vaughan, and many others, and under whose tutelage Eli recorded Moonshine Mojo, his first full-length recording, which has become a collector’s item today.

The following year Eli returned his attention to classic acoustic blues. Influenced by the songs of R.L.Burnside, Bukka White, and Son House, he recorded Miss Blues’es Child at The Sound of Music Studios In Richmond Virginia in a single autumn day, playing a borrowed 12-string and his own old Gibson, accompanying himself with a kick-drum or a tambourine tied to his boot. Patrick McCrowel, a talented friend from Greene County, stopped by to sing harmony and pick banjo on a few cuts, spontaneous and unrehearsed. Eli called it “…blue, blue, blues;” reviewers called him “…a young gun with an old soul…storming through banged-up slide guitar romps, tackling the storied form with the mean streak of his generation’s metal men.” Independently released in 2005, Miss Blues’es Child was released internationally by Valley Entertainment on the Sledgehammer Blues label in 2007.

Meanwhile, Eli was putting together a new power trio to play and record his original work: a young, wildly talented local drummer, Jordan Marchini, who was playing for the gothic metal band Bella Morte, and a hard-rock/progressive bassist, Eric Yates, who could execute and elaborate on the complex and difficult basslines Eli’s music required. They began performing and recording in January of 2006, and released the finished album, ElectricHolyFireWater, in January 2007. (Nothing to Be Blue About, The Hook, 2007)

By now, Eli’s musical reputation was spreading. His band, christened ElectricHolyFireWater, opened for legendary guitarist Johnny Winter, Room Full of Blues ,and Shemekia Copeland. He chose African percussionist Darrell Rose to perform with him on The Millennium Stage at The Kennedy Center, electrifying an audience of 300 with his own special brand of African Rhythm and American Blues, and he opened for B.B. King solo at The Paramount Theatre in February of 2007.

Speed Limit Change Takes Effect On Other Parts of Route 151

Nellysford – Nelson County, Virginia
As we first told you back in June of this year, The Nelson BOS voted to lower the speed limit on another section of VA Route 151 between Route 6E and Nellysford. In December of 2007 a portion of 151 north toward Greenfield was lowered from 55 MPH to 45 in response to one of the deadliest years in traffic history along the winding rural two highway in Nelson County, Virginia. An outcry from citizens prompted changes to the highway built decades ago.

Prior to the most recent 45 MPH speed limit change, drivers traveling south on Route 151 toward Nellysford would be in the 45 MPH zone until just past Martin Store Substation, then the speed limit would increase back to 55 MPH for a short distance, only to drop back to 45 MPH as you entered Nellysford.

The newest change now makes Route 151 a consistent 45 MPH from just north of Bland Wade Road near the area of Afton Family Medicine and Five Star Health & Fitness, all of the way south into Nellysford, Virginia

IBEC Apologizes for BPL Delay, Offers Customers Free Dial-Up

IBEC expects "a few more weeks of waiting" as Verizon completes installation of the backbone for BPL.

Nelson County residents who ordered BPL months ago received the following notice from IBEC, the company contracted by CVEC to install the broadband service:

Dear Customer,

IBEC is aware that many of you have been anxiously waiting for our BPL service for several months now. While we are doing everything in our power to get the high-speed service to you as quickly as possible, we had no way of knowing the issues that we would ultimately face with Verizon. We have now resolved those issues, but still face at least a few more weeks of waiting while Verizon finishes up their portion of the installation. Although the circumstances are out of our control, we do feel that an apology is due. We sincerely apologize that your service has been delayed.

We know this is very frustrating and we would like to let you know that we are just as anxious to provide you with our service as you are to receive it. We want to apologize to you again for this extended wait.

In light of these circumstances, IBEC would like to offer you our “backup dial-up service” that is included with your BPL service for free until we are able to activate your BPL Service. The dial-up service will be offered with no hourly usage limits at no cost to you.

Please call 1-888-IBEC-BPL if you would like to start using the dial-up service. We will be happy to help you.

Thanks for your patience,

IBEC customer Service

BPL installation was recently delayed when Verizon halted plans to continue implementing the system’s internet backbone. The move resulted in a stand-off that left customers wondering if the high speed internet service they paid for would ever be installed.

If you are a leaf lover, you better get your looking done within the next few days. In Nelson County, and Central Virginia, peak season is pretty much here. From now on the leaves are falling fast. According to The Virginia Department of Forestry, the peak season for Central Virginia Fall colors is from October 27th to November 10th.

Typical Fall Peak Colors Map Via VA Department Of Forestry

Wednesday, while we were up at Montebello, Virginia at the Montebello Country Store (love those guys by the way – great place!!!) We noticed the brilliant colors along the Blue Ridge Parkway and Route 56 that winds it’s way from Massies Mill, Virginia to Montebello. Many leaves are already falling to the ground, so if you plan to do any looking, we’d say this this coming weekend is about it! From there on it there will be some fall colors, but on the downward spiral!

Get out and enjoy before they are all gone!

BPL : IBEC “It’s A Go!” : Update

Apparently Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) will be activated soon.
Apparently Broadband Over Powerline (BPL) will be activated soon.

Afton
Nelson County, Virginia

In a mass e-mail sent out by IBEC customer service Monday, and in comments posted on our site by IBEC, an agreement has been reached with Verizon for the installation of their lines providing the internet backbone to BPL. We have followed the entire history of BPL / Verizon events here.

Today’s e-mail from IBEC:

From: “IBEC Customer Service”
Date: November 3, 2008 1:30:28 PM EST
To: “info”
Subject: Martins Store BPL Update

IBEC is pleased to announce that the issue regarding Verizon and the backhaul circuits has now been resolved. Verizon has agreed to continue installing the circuits. We will let you know as soon as the circuits are activated. We will then start turning on the first customers a few days after the circuits are online.

Thanks for your patience,
IBEC Customer Service

No time frame was given in the e-mail, as to when service could be expected, but with much of the work already done on both sides, it would seem that BPL service would start relatively soon.

If anyone is activated, please drop a comment here so we can track the progress!
