Wingina
Nelson County, Virginia

Authorities are investigating a weekend fatality that happened just before midnight Saturday in Wingina. That’s a few miles east of Lovingston and Shipman in Eastern Nelson County, Virginia. “The car apparently veered off of the road and hit a tree, then burst into flames,” Sheriff David Brooks tells NCL. A body was found inside the car after the blaze was extinguished. The sheriff says the body was sent to Richmond for an autopsy and positive identification before the name is released to the public.

The exact cause of the accident is not known at this time.

Augusta Countiains Still Bucking Property Tax Increase & In Bath County It Worked!

1

Augusta County, VA

We’ve been telling you about the move in neighboring Augusta County, Virginia to raise property taxes after reassessments there ringing so familiar to those we saw in Nelson County saw last year. The fight continues in Augusta with only one BOS member thus far standing with the people over the outrage of the increases.

Apparently when the masses speak up, it does have an impact. SWAC Girl reports in her blog that in Both County last year, the increases were deemed so ridiculous that the appraisal firm was eventually fired and the tax rate rolled back to it’s original rate before appraisal.

It’s interesting that in a time when people across the country are struggling to make ends meet, cutting back in their own households, and reeling in expenses, government somehow doesn’t get the message. They continue to grow, increase spending, and then look to all of us to pay for it.

Note to elected officials, cut government, cut the waste, get your house in order before you come into ours.

Today’s weather photo is a nice one that Ann Strober grabbed for us this past weekend. The beautiful evening sky as Canadian Geese fly off on the horizon. Thanks for the beauty Ann! Actually got to eat a quick breakfast this past weekend with Ann at the RVCC Pancake breakfast!

After this past weekend it makes you forget that we are still very much in the throws of winter with the official calendar start of Spring still more than a month away on March 20th.

Saturday and Sunday were a nice break from the very cold temps we have been experiencing this winter. In the valley Sunday, we topped out at a very nice 73° here at our NCL office. While the mountains reached temps in the upper 40’s to lower 50’s. It was a great weekend to say the least.

Overnight Sunday a cold front slipped through the area dropping our temperatures slightly from the weekend, but mild high pressure takes over again Monday with temperatures still pleasant topping out near 60° in the valley and low 50’s mountains.

We start the week pretty quiet. By Tuesday showers enter the forecast and stay with us until Wednesday night.

By the end of the week temperatures start down again with chances for winter precipitation by Friday night into Saturday.

Be sure to check out Tommy’s audio weather to your right by hitting the play button just under the temperature display! Very cool!

The fantastic weather this weekend is bringing out the crowds and Saturday morning’s RVCC Pancake Breakfast and Community Market packed them in. We just couldn’t resist Happy, the dog above, that’s up for adoption from Almost Home Pet Adoption Center here in Nelson.

BPL Installation Update – February 6, 2009

IBEC has been waiting for the contract crews to return from storm restoration duty in the Midwest. Contract and cooperative crews from Virginia have been away for almost two weeks, which has slowed the scheduled work. That included help with bringing up the BPL network and completing the installation of Customer Access Units (CAU’s).

On Monday, February 9, the contract crews will patrol the Woods Mill and Tanbark circuits to troubleshoot any BPL regenerators that require an adjustment. Normally, the crews would make modifications as part of the normal installation process but they had to “hang the units dry” since there was not Internet traffic flowing through the BPL backbone as it was constructed.

People are surfing on the Woods Mill circuits and new subscribers are coming online in the Afton area. IBEC has been in contact with some subscribers who must complete the setup process by providing the MAC address from their modem and the connected equipment. If you are one of the people who have been contacted, please get back in touch with IBEC to complete the set-up so that you can enjoy the BPL system.

The last injection point to be activated will be the Martin’s Store substation on February 13, the date being confirmed today. IBEC will bring up the BPL Network the week following Valentine’s Day and begin activating customers from then on.

Any customers that are activated and wish to submit feedback or share their experience with subscribers waiting to come online, please send your comments to service@ibec.net and tell us that you want to let others know about your BPL experience.

Thanks again for your patience,
IBEC Customer Service

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
Thursday, February 5, 2009

PRESENT: Mr. Steve Crandall, Ms. Emily Pelton, Mr. Greg Kelly,
Mr. Alphonso Taylor and Mr. Natt Hall (Staff: Ms. Maureen Kelley)

ABSENT: Mr. Bennett Saunders and Mr. Erwin Berry

BROADBAND – Ms. Kelley reported that the committee has reviewed the final
report and identified several issues to be resolved. She noted that the
report has gone back to the consultants and will tentatively be presented to
the Board of Supervisors in March.

LOCAL FOOD HUB – Ms. Kelley reported that the organizing group is looking at
proceeding with the project utilizing private donations and grant funding.
She noted that they will be back in touch with the EDA with a revised plan.

TRANSPORATION SURVEY – Ms. Kelley distributed a draft Rockfish Valley
Transit Survey for review and approval. The survey will be distributed to
the public, WPOA and WPI via several sources and will be used to determine
public interest in the proposed plan. Members approved the survey with
minor clarifying changes.

CENTRAL VA SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER – Ms. Kelley distributed both
the SBDC and the Thomas Jefferson Partnership for Economic Development
annual reports. Members tabled discussion for review of the materials.

PUBLIC COMMENT – Mr. Allen Hale, Board of Supervisors’ Chair, said that the
Supervisors have been very impressed with the ongoing work of the EDA and
then brought them up to date on several ongoing county issues:

– Courthouse Project – contract awarded at approximately $3 million less
than the estimates. The county is hoping to break ground in April. Mr.
Crandall asked whether the contractor could be encouraged to use local
contractors whenever possible. Mr. Hale agreed to meet with the contractor
to convey the county’s interest in utilizing local companies.
– Solid Waste Collection Sites – looks very hopeful that the Cove Valley
Recreation Center will negotiate a sale to the county.
– Budget – all levels of government facing decreased revenues. The county
is facing somewhere around a half-million dollar shortfall not including the
school system, which is looking at approximately an $800,000 shortfall in
funding.
– Mr. Kelly suggested that the EDA, School System and County consider
sharing the expense for a grant writer to identify and obtain grant funding.
Mr. Hale said that he would ask county staff to prepare a report for the
board on the specifics of doing so.
– Mr. Hale said that he would like to see the county find a way to
encourage residents to buy locally whenever possible.

Mr. Kelly suggested that the EDA begin work on a system to promote local
products. Members voted unanimously on his motion that the EDA work to
create a “buy locally” marketing and distribution system to include
web-based assets and schedule of events plus a marketing plan and budget.
The motion included establishment of a committee of Mr. Kelly, Mr. Hall, Ms.
Pelton and Ms. Kelley to work on the project.

Meeting adjourned.
