Tonight’s a big night in Nelson County Soccer! We told you about their 5-0 win against Buckingham on Memorial Day. Tonight at 6PM they will square off against George Mason High in Regional Tournament Play.

Parent’s have been emailng and posting about this one folks. GM is a big rival! “IF WE WIN THIS GAME, WE GO TO THE STATE TOURNEY FOR ONLY THE SECOND TIME EVER!!! COME OUT AND CHEER ON THE TEAM, AS THEY ATTEMPT TO MAKE HISTORY. The game will be played rain or shine. BRING NOISE MAKERS AND LOTS OF ENTHIUSIASM! Let’s show those folks from northern VA what Nelson County has to offer. Go Govs!” Jace Goodling commented earlier on our NCL website. His son, Clarke Goodling, was named Dogwood District All-District Player of the Year.

Sounds like this is going to a one very serious game tonight!

See you there and good luck Govs!!

For many students in the Nelson County High School Marching Governor’s Band, Tuesday night was a bittersweet occasion. For the seniors, it was farewell as they head beyond NCHS. A big thank you to Wendie Wyant for sharing her pictures with us!

In our May 2009 issue of Nelson County Life Magazine, page 29, our writer Jennie Tal, takes a walk along the path of history at Mac’s Country Store in Roseland, Virgina. The store was recently purchased by Betty Brown.

A few days ago we had a visit from the daughter of the original owner of the store, Mac Giles. Lynn Giles McClain loved the article but wanted to be sure, historically, we had it exactly right. So do we Lynn! She was telling us that as written in our article, Eddie Seaman didn’t actually name the store Mac’s Market, but rather Mac himself did. “My grandparents originally owned the store and used the name Giles’ General Merchandise. After their deaths, my father changed the name to Mac’s Market, probably in the late ’50’s,” says Lynn. The photo above shows Mac standing by one of the Esso gas pumps in 1960. With the changes along the way, it’s easy to see how it can be confused.

The original store had a TV & Radio Service store as well.

Thanks again to Lynn for updating the information and for sharing these great shots of the way Mac’s was back then!

While most of us were grilling out Memorial Day, the boy’s soccer team at Nelson County High School was stamping out a win against Buckingham in their Region B Tournament play. Our Paul Purpura was there to grab the action and came back with some fantastic shots. Excellent pics Paul!

The regional tournament is on May 27th here at home against George Mason.

Unsettled Weather For The Balance Of The Week : Nice By Weekend! 5.26.09

Nelson County, Virginia

Most of Memorial Day weekend went off without rain, though skies looked threatening for the last half of the holiday. Overnight Monday some pretty heavy thunderstorms formed in the southern part of Nelson around Tyro and Massies Mill, eventually moving into the northern sections of the county. Some of those locations had heavy rainfall as the slow moving storms worked across the county.

A stalled frontal boundary will keep chances for thunderstorms and rain showers in the forecast for most of the week, but nice weather returns just in time for the weekend.!

You can listen to Tommy’s Audio Weather by going here.
