19 year old Austin Griffin has retained the Charlottesville law firm of St. John, Bowling, Lawrence & Quagliana, LLP in Charlottesville to represent him against the first degree murder of Opal Page on May 6, 2009 in Afton, Virginia. We first told you about the crime as it was unfolding the night of May 6th after friends discovered Mrs Page’s body in her home just north of Greenfield on VA Route 151.

“In a video court hearing Wednesday with General District Court Judge, Joesph Serkes, Francis McQ. Lawrence and Rhonda Quagliana of the law firm said they will be representing Griffin,” says Nelson County, Virginia Sheriff, David Brooks.

Both Griffin and co-defendant, Christopher Meeks are charged with 1st degree murder in the case, along with a list of other crimes in connection with the murder.

Sheriff Brooks tells NCL that it may be several more weeks before any additional action takes place in the case as attorneys meet with their respective clients.

Earlier post from this morning
After a Tuesday evening round of strong to severe thunderstorms across Central Virginia, the chance for more severe weather and possible flash flooding exists during the afternoon and evening hours Wednesday. A Flash Flood Watch has already been posted from 12 noon until the late evening hours Wednesday.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Nelson County and much of Central Virginia in the slight risk area for severe weather later in the Wednesday.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed Nelson County and much of Central Virginia in the slight risk area for severe weather later in the Wednesday.

The Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma has also placed Nelson and the surrounding area in the slight risk area for severe weather later in the day Wednesday. Afternoon heating, and plenty of moisture will provide a scenario where severe thunderstorms could develop later today.

Though not a sure bet, the potential for severe weather is better today than the average late Spring day across Central Virginia.

Nelson County, Virginia

It was a night of celebration, remembrance, good byes, and tears as some of the students at North Branch School in Afton graduated from the place they have called home during the past 8 years. One of the most touching parts of the evening happened when Kia Scherr took a few minutes to thank everyone at North Branch for the wonderful experience her daughter Naomi had when she was a student there. 13 year old Naomi and her dad Alan were tragically killed over the Thanksgiving holiday in 2008 in the Mumbai attacks. “Her years at NBS were some of the best,” Ms. Scherr told the crowd Tuesday night. A special memorial scholarship has been setup in Naomi’s name.

Graduating students put on a musical presentation in their final day as students at NBS.

“The students Tuesday night were graduating from 8th grade and going on to various area high school programs,” says Bonnie Holliday, Development Director at North Branch.

As a way of saying thanks. The faculty at North Branch were presented with hand made custom pens. Two former students of NBS, Mack Pearce and Chris Wygand made the pens from an ash tree that once stood tall on the school property.
