Free VPI Reading at Hamner Theater – Sunday at 1pm

0

The Hamner Theater’s Virginia Playwrights Initiative presents two free staged readings on Saturday, June 20 & Sunday, June 21.

There will be a free Staged Reading of “Nobody’s Wife”, by Cindy Dlugolecki on Saturday at 7 p.m. This play was inspired by the work of Philadelphian muralist Violet Oakley, one of the ‘Red Rose Girls’, and the first woman in history to be commissioned to paint murals in a public building.

On Sunday, June 21 at 1 p.m., there will be a free Staged Reading of “The Grove at Illium”; Jane Ann Crum’s play follows a family over several generations, beginning with the establishment of the family farm, The Grove, in the nineteenth century, and continuing to the present day – a play about family, and a search for self.

The Virginia Playwrights Initiative (VPI) is a part of the Hamner Theater’s continuing mission to foster new works for the stage, specifically those by Virginia playwrights. VPI provides a venue for the playwright to workshop, rewrite and rehearse a new script with a company of experienced actors, a director and a dramaturg. The playwright participates in a process of readings, rehearsal, discussion, culminating in a public staged reading.

Following each reading, there will be a discussion open to all. This discussion is an important part of the process, providing an opportunity for the playwright to understand the impact the play has had on the audience. The Virginia Playwrights Initiative is made possible in part by grants from the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the BAMA Fund.

Nelson County, Virginia
With dewpoints already in the lower 70’s Thursday morning, and temperatures expected to be near 90° in the afternoon, the potential for severe weather is developing across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed the area in the slight risk category for severe storms. Their morning discussion included the following for this area:

…MID ATLANTIC REGION…
MORNING WATER VAPOR IMAGERY SHOWS AN UPPER TROUGH ROTATING EASTWARD
ACROSS THE UPPER OH VALLEY. THIS TROUGH WILL PASS ACROSS THE MID
ATLANTIC COASTAL REGION TODAY AND HELP TO INITIATE SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS FROM NYC SOUTHWARD INTO VA/NC. SURFACE DEWPOINTS IN
THE 70S ARE PRESENT THIS MORNING ACROSS PARTS OF VA/NC WHERE STRONG
INSTABILITY WILL LIKELY DEVELOP BY EARLY AFTERNOON. ALL MODELS ARE
IN GENERAL AGREEMENT THAT SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS WILL DEVELOP OVER
THIS AREA. VERTICAL SHEAR PROFILES APPEAR SUFFICIENT FOR THE
DEVELOPMENT OF A FEW SUPERCELLS OVER THIS AREA CAPABLE OF DAMAGING
WINDS…HAIL…AND ISOLATED TORNADOES.

Additionally the local weather service office in Sterling mentions the possibility of strong to severe storms both Thursday and Friday in their Hazardous Weather Outlook:

SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING
MAINLY ALONG AND EAST OF THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS. ONE OR TWO
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ALSO MAY DEVELOP ON THE HIGHER TERRAIN WEST
OF THE BLUE RIDGE. ANY STORMS THAT FORM WILL BE CAPABLE OF
PRODUCING PRIMARILY LARGE HAIL…DAMAGING WINDS AND VERY HEAVY
RAIN.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY

A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS MAY BE POSSIBLE AGAIN FRIDAY AFTERNOON
AND EVENING.

SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT…
SPOTTER ACTIVATION IS EXPECTED THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

We’ll continue watching developments here and update if severe weather starts breaking out.

Area Church Members Feed 10,000 People In About 2 hours : 6.18.09

Massies Mill
Nelson County, Virginia

For the second time in less than a year, area churches have banded together to do the unthinkable. They have packed thousands of meals for needy folks, this time in about two hours. The group met Wednesday afternoon at Grace Episcopal Church in Massies Mill where the assembly line cranked out meals for 10,000 people in about 2 hours. We first told you about the effort back in the Fall of 2008 when area churches had their inaugural event.

Sarah Loken who helped coordinate Wednesday’s event says, “This year we have lots more people.” The event is part of Operation Sharehouse that provides meals for needy people around the world. It’s part of the umbrella organization Stop Hunger Now based in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The idea originated when Grace Episcopal’s Rector, Judy Parrish, attended a North Carolina conference in early 2008 where they packaged around 11,000 meals in just over two hours. “What I like about this effort, is there are no age boundaries. There’s something here that everyone can do from the very young to the very old, and we are all helping people that have very little to eat,” Judy told NCL Wednesday afternoon as the first 1000 meals had just been packaged.

Congrats to everyone from all of the 13 area churches for a tremendously successful effort!
