Blood Drive In Honor Of David Blackwell : September 8, 2009 : 10AM-3PM

On September 8, 2009, Blue Ridge Medical Center is sponsoring a blood drive in honor of David Blackwell. David was severely burned over 60% of his body in a house fire. He has been a patient in the DeCamp Burn Center at UVA since August 2,2009. During his treatment, he has required numerous blood transfusions as well as plasma and platelets. Please consider donating blood between 10 and 3 on Sept. 8 at Blue Ridge Medical Center in Arrington. Atlantic Storm Danny May Affect Weekend Weather : 8.27.09

The 2009 hurricane season has been a quiet one thus far and it looks to stay that way in the immediate future. However, A North Atlantic Storm named Danny, (a tropical storm as of late Wednesday night) may affect Nelson County by the weekend. The track and strength of Danny is very unpredictable right now, but current thinking is he will skirt close enough to the Virginia coast line to perhaps increase our chances for rain on Saturday.

Over the past 24 hours Danny has not been extremely well organized, but does warrant watching as we approach the weekend.

There will be a Harvest Fair on Saturday, October 3rd from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Nelson County Rescue Squad building, located 1-1/2 miles off Route 29 on Irish Road in Faber. The sale will include crafts, yard sale, “Once Upon A Time” Thrift Shop, apple butter, silent auction, Farmers’ Market, and bake sale. Breakfast will be served from 7:30 – 10:30 a.m. Homemade Brunswick stew will be available by the quart or the bowl.

This is a multi-level class, for both beginners and those with experience. Check it out and start your weekend out right!

The last full week of August started with milder temperatures and less humidity. Over the next couple of days look for temps to feel typical of an August Summer in Central Virginia with afternoon highs rising to near 90° – inching to the lower 90’s in some locations. On the mountains, look for temps in the upper 70’s to near 80°.

By the weekend temps will cool into the 70’s for afternoon valley highs with chances for scattered afternoon thunderstorms back in the forecast. By early next week for the end of August, some of the daytime highs are predicted to be only in the mid 70s’ for valley highs with the mountains never making it our of the upper 60’s.
