Rockfish Valley Community Center (RVCC) board members, along with Henry Saxon, Regional Service Director from The Boy’s & Girl’s Club of America (B&GC) met Tuesday night to look into establishing a club in Nelson County at RVCC. Other interested folks living in the area attended the meeting to see what the prospects of starting a club might be. Agnes Schrider, owner of Nelson Physical Therapy in Beech Grove/Roseland, and an RVCC board member, organized the meeting. “I think we have a real opportunity here to guide our children. It’s not just because I am a parent,” Agnes told the crowd of about 50 Tuesday night. She has been organizing the effort for most of this summer.

“You need to think about the why. Think about these thousands of young people through no fault of their own find themselves where they are today. And will this community create an opportunity where these kids can get on a trajectory much higher than one that maybe laid in front of them right now,” Saxon explained. He has been a lifelong B&GC participant starting with the organization right out of college and now a Regional Service Director for the organization.

An organization established at RVCC would most likely be a part of an umbrella organization from a nearby club like the one in Charlottesville, though not necessarily a prerequisite to start a club here.

Boys and Girls Clubs of America offers low cost services to youth when they need it the most; after school and during the summer. Studies show that where Boys and Girls Clubs are located, juvenile crime is reduced, scholastic achievement among members improves, attendance in school improves, and most of all, overall attitude among young people is greatly enhanced.

A steering committee is being formed after Tuesday night’s meeting to see what steps need to be taken next.

Many people reported seeing helicopters flying low in Nelson County late last month. The choppers were part of an annual eradication program involving The VA State Alcohol Beverage Commission, State Police and The Nelson County Sheriff’s Department. One of the largest finds by lawmen was on August 24th in Tyro, Virginia. “We found over a hundred plants there in addition to several gallons illegal alcohol,” says Nelson County, VA Sheriff, David Brooks. Sheriff Brooks says Darrell Ramsey of Tyro has been charged with 3 different violations, all felonies. Two involving the growing and distribution of marijuana, another involving a firearm.

Sheriff Brooks says the eradication program is held each summer to find and destroy marijuana being grown primarily in overgrown remote areas of the county.

RVCC-2

Meeting to discuss starting a Boy’s and Girl’s Club in Nelson County at the Rockfish Valley Community Center.

Members of the Rockfish Valley Community Center have been working with a representative of the Boys and Girls Club of America to establish a Boys and Girls Club in our community. As you may know, Boys and Girls Clubs of America offer low cost services to youth when they need it the most; after school and during the summer. Studies show that where Boys and Girls Clubs are located, juvenile crime is reduced, scholastic achievement among members improves, attendance in school improves, and most of all, overall attitude among young people is greatly enhanced.

Boys and Girls Clubs offer programs in five core areas: Education and Career Development; Character and Leadership Development; Health and Life Skills; the Arts; and Sports, Fitness and Recreation. This proactive and innovative approach to the needs of youth has made them one of the fastest growing youth serving organizations in the country. We believe our community has the compassion, professionalism and organizational ability to explore this wonderful opportunity for young people and their families.

On Tuesday, September 1, 2009 at 6pm we would like to invite you to attend a presentation at the Rockfish Valley Community Center to further explore this opportunity. We have invited a representative of Boys and Girls Clubs of America to join us to answer any questions. My phone number is 434. 361. 0100 should you have any questions. Please RSVP at this number and we look forward to seeing you there. Thank you

Nelson County, Virginia

After a cloudy start Monday, the day ended beautifully with the remainder of the week, picture perfect, for the first week of September. After many 90+ degree readings last week, temps for the coming week are in the 70’s and low 80’s for afternoon highs. Monday afternoon, Al Stacey and I flew over the beautiful mountains here in Nelson to get some updated photos of the area. What a beautiful late summer afternoon!

Al is the owner of Gaia Homes, Inc in Nellysford, but few know Al is an experienced/veteran helicopter pilot with over 10,000 thousand hours in the air. He’s flown in some of the toughest conditions known to pilots across the globe. He’s fought fires from the air in Spain, and flown to oil platforms way out in the Atlantic, in gales! Al’s forgotten more about flying choppers than most ever learned!

Congrats to Blue Mountain Brewery and Devils Backbone Brewing Company! Both of Nelson’s microbreweries were recently recognized for their craftsmanship of beers in Blue Ridge Country Magazine. Hat Tip to David Turley over at Musings Over A Pint for letting us know about this! If you are a beer lover and have never read David’s site, be sure to check it out as well. If it’s beer, he’s got it covered!

Congrats again to Jason over at DBBC and Taylor at BMB for making some of the best beer around!

It’s that time of year. Area vineyards are busy harvesting some varieties of grapes. We caught up with Brian Goff and his helpers over at Afton Mountain Vineyard & Winery (AMV) as they were unloading some freshly picked grapes. AMV recently sold to Tony & Elizabeth Smith who have been busy putting their personal touches on the operation that’s been owned by Tom and Shinko Corpora since 1988. The 12 acres of vineyards were planted in the late 1970s by David Mefford and sold about 10 years later to the Corporas. We first told you about the sale and new owners back in late March 2009.

Many other vineyards and grape growers are also busy picking during the past several weeks.

Many area wineries are also releasing some of the latest wines!

Cheers!
