There was a fire earlier this week at The Oakland Museum in Arrington, Virgina. This was a good fire. The best kind!

In the fall of 2004 the Nelson County Historical Society purchased the Oakland property for the purpose of establishing a county museum focused on rural life in Nelson County. With a $275,000 purchase price for the 11 acres and the existing house, the Society began the campaign to pay for the Oakland property. The initial contribution of $50,000 from the Nelson County Board of Supervisors, and contributions from Society funds along with donations from many individuals during the last five years, has allowed the Society to retired the loan debt.

Under the direction of a competent Oakland Museum Board the development of the property has also progressed with renovations to the house and the addition of a safe highway entrance and parking area. Just two of the highlighted exhibits at the museum include the development of rural electrification in Nelson County and the impact of Hurricane Camille in the county.

Way to go Oakland!

Oakland – Nelson County Museum of History is open on Saturdays 10-4 and Sundays 1-4.

Nelson County, Virginia
Though spotty showers have been about the area in the past week, moisture is in rare supply right now. Couple that with winds of 45 MPH on Wednesday and you have the perfect recipe for brush and forest fires across portions of Central Virginia.

A closer look at one of the fires Thursday.
A closer look at one of the fires Thursday.

Low humidity levels with very little rain lately have increased the fire threat. Late Wednesday afternoon a significant forest fire started on Horseshoe Mountain in Southern Nelson County. That fire was under control just before dark.

Rain chances are on the increase Friday night into Saturday, but not before gusty winds return again on Friday.

The Lovingston Farm Market (LFM) has been going on all summer long, but yesterday was a special Mildly Wild Wednesday edition of the market. In addition to all the great locally produced fruits, vegetables, and crafts at the LFM, there was a mid-week festival/community get-together that included:

* A wine tasting compliments of Veritas Vineyard

*Gold Leaf Lager Beer compliments of Devils Backbone Brewing Company

*Four types of barbecue, (including goat) raised on Black Eagle Farm and prepared by the Colleen Deli

*Music featuring Nelson’s own Byron Massie

We first told you on Monday about the Nelson County, Virginia duo, Hobojac, and their plans to hit the road in November, along with the release of their latest CD, One Word No “K”. We finally got our hands on the actual CD and it’s very nice. Nice artwork, photography and sounds great! These guys have knocked it out of the park. Andy Waldeck, also of Nelson County, provided additional instrumentation and production of the new CD release.

We’ve been promoting the new songs here each morning in Tommy’s Weather.
