The first snow of the coming winter season came just a tad early according to the calendar. Late Saturday night into Sunday morning of this past weekend, just under an inch of snow fell in the higher elevations of Nelson County. Overnight lows hit the upper 20’s in the mountains making ideal conditions for the falling snow. Paul Purpura grabbed more shots here right at daybreak Sunday morning.
The light snow wasn't enough to create any problems, but is a reminder that winter is on the way, though it doesn't officially start until December 21st!
After a chilly night – last night, the snow and the cold temps are long gone for the next several days as a warming trend is setting in for the coming week. Look for valley highs in the 60’s and 70’s for the next several days, with the mountains easily making it into the 60’s as we approach midweek. Rain enters the forecast again by Friday.
Charley and Pat Schulte with their Stoney Creek Sweet and Spicy Chili were the winners in Saturday's Cook Off held at The Wintergreen Nature Foundation. In addition to the chili cook-off kids got to enjoy pumpkin carving. That's a nicely carved pumpkin!

The calendar may still say October, but the first snow of the season fell last night up on the mountain at Wintergreen Resort. Our Paul Purpura was out grabbing some of these images. They got between 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of snow. Not a lot, but snow none the less!
Most areas in the valley saw nothing, but on the mountains generally above 2000 feet a nice dusting fell.
“I awoke to the sound of plows this morning, so I knew we must have had a little bit of snow overnight,” Paul told us via instant message this morning when we were coordinating the upload of the photos.
The overnight low temp in the valley only reached 41° while temps in the mountains dropped to 29° by Sunday morning. Just enough to have the snow stick nicely! No where near enough to fire up the lift, but it won't be very much longer! As cold as it was Sunday morning, ironically the coming week will have temps back in the 60's!Though certainly not unheard of, October snows, in particular mid October, are pretty rare in Central Virginia.Certainly a sign of things to come in the next few weeks as we leave behind those carefree warm days of Summer.Last year the weather cooperated just enough for a little head start on ski season, we'll have to see about this year!Usually measurable snowfall does occur until the months of November and December in this region.

-Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the smooth functioning of Rotary clubs.
-Vocational Service involves club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and they inspire others in the process.
–
-Community Service is the opportunity Rotary clubs have to implement club projects and activities that improve life in the local community.
-International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to PolioPlus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries.
Local Rotary Clubs are made up of business and professional men and women who are interested in service to the community and the world who band together for a weekly program and fellowship. Rotary is also open to retired persons who have been in a business or profession.
The Nelson County Rotary Club meets every Thursday at 7:15 am in the Nelson Center in Lovingston, VA.
We first told you about Cheryl Tompkins fight against breast cancer back in our July 2009 issue of Nelson County Life Magazine. We are happy to report Cheryl has successfully completed all of her chemo a few days ago! We caught up with Cheryl at Stoney Creek Pharmacy last week where she was checking out the new cash register system just put in to make things easier for customers coming by. “It takes the flex spending cards and health savings accounts. People who previously couldn’t use those here, can now,” Cheryl proudly told us.
Cheryl pictured in our July 2009 article while undergoing one of her many chemo treatments at UVa in Charlottesville.
Though Cheryl now has radiation treatments to undergo, she has a positive outlook and is already redesigning the paint scheme for her motorcycle. She won’t be back in the store on a regular basis for some time to come, but will begin easing back into it as she recovers from her treatments.
If you see Cheryl, or want to post a comment here, wish her the best, she’s rounded a big corner in her journey!
