Many roads have improved since the blizzard that hit Nelson County over the weekend, but many are still in very bad shape. For this reason all non-essential government offices here in Nelson County have been closed.

Nelson EMS Director, Ray Uttaro notified us of the information this morning via our NCL Facebook page.

“Please post ASAP. The Nelson County Government offices are closed today, also all Collection sites and Transfer stations are closed. All Emergency Operations will be available but basic offices are closed.”

No word on Tuesday and beyond, but we’ll keep you posted!

Road crews made tremendous progress Sunday on getting primary roads cleared across the area. However, many secondary roads have not been plowed with many folks still stuck at home. Route 664 heading up to Wintergreen was still littered with abandoned vehicles late Sunday, but the road was passable with many people heading up to grab some of the best skiing in many years. Primary roads such as Route 151 and 29 have a vast majority of the snow removed, though snow pack still remains in spots along those routes. Crews will be out in full force again Monday working to finish primary roads and begin clearing secondary ones.

CVEC also reports as of Sunday evening that all of it’s customers have power restored.

A flurry or two may be seen early Monday morning, but nothing major. Partly sunny skies will be the rule with with cold temps for day time highs.

A more significant weather system is in the extended forecast by Christmas Eve night. More in Tommy’s Weather here.

Slowly but surely people living in Nelson County are digging out. Many, however, are still stuck at home. If you aren’t on a main road, and don’t have some way to get your driveway plowed you can’t get out!

But for those that can, today is a fantastic day up at Wintergreen Resort.

Caution About Carbon Monoxide Gas From Blocked Vent Pipes During Snow : 12.19.09

0

Tiger1

Lovingston
Nelson County, Virginia

Operations Manager, Tim Spicer with Tiger Fuel contacted us today and asked that we post this warning to users of propane devices about this potential hazard.

If you use a propane gas heating appliance such as a furnace, vented fire logs, or hot water heater, make sure the appliance vent on the outside wall of your house does not become blocked by heavy snow accumulation or a snow drift. The vent is typically round, goes from the appliance through the wall of your house 18″-30″ inches above ground. Blockage of the appliance vent can cause the buildup of dangerous carbon monoxide gas in your home. Check your vent during this storm and do not let snow block the escape of dangerous exhaust gases.

Any questions, contact Tiger on the web: http://www.tigerfuel.com/

CVEC Outage Status Report : Updated 7PM : 12.19.09

Updated 7PM via Facebook:
Their post around 6PM Saturday night.

Central Virginia Electric Cooperative Crews have restored service to about 250 members served by the Whitehall Substation and 90 members served by the Martins Store Substation

Earlier Post:
The latest from CVEC as of 3pm:

December 19, 3:00 PM:

The level of power outages have continued to rise as downed trees have damage powerlines. Crews have been hindered by difficult travel on secondary roads and in mountainous terrain. The work is slow, difficult and dangerous as the linemen must first reach and then clear trees that have fallen on powerlines and damaged poles.

There are significant outages on distribution circuits in areas served by the Whitehall and Midway Substations in Albemarle County and there are several outages in the Martins Store Substation in Nelson County. These area had high snow accumulation and have steep terrain.

With over 1400 affected members, crews may be able to restore a significant number of services if all goes well, but it is unlikely that all outages will be clear today
