Nelson County, Virginia
After nearly 24 hours of snow falling across Virginia, it’s outta here! In Nelson County amounts varied from a foot or so in the valley up to 18″ in some of the mountainous terrain of the county. You can view a neat roundup of other area snowfall totals by going here to CBS-19 and newsplex.com in Charlottesville.

Primary roads for the most part were all clear by sunset Saturday, but many secondary and back roads were still very hazardous, some impassable.

The heavy weight of the wet snow caused lots of branches to break from trees.

Since this was a heavy wet blanketing snow, branches breaking out of trees has been a real problem. Central Virginia Electric and every other power company have been working around the clock trying to get the lights back on for their customers. At its peak CVEC reported 10,000 + customers in the dark across their entire system in all of the counties served. By nightfall only a few hundred customers in Nelson County remained without power. They were the hardest ones, and repairs will go into Sunday and perhaps beyond.

Nelson County, Virginia Just a mess. No other way to describe it. Winter storms continue pounding Nelson County and much of Virgina for this winter season. Just in the past week Nelson has seen its third accumulating snowfall, though this weekend’s is the most substantial so far. A Winter Storm Warning that was in effect for much of Friday and Saturday was canceled around 5PM Saturday evening. Snowfall across the area had pretty much ended by that time.

By dark Friday about 8-10 inches of snow had already piled up after briefly changing to sleet and even freezing rain. CVEC reported several power outages across their coverage territory. Crews were working late Friday night into Saturday to clear the outages. You can view their current status map by clicking here. Other sister power companies were also reporting outages, with the largest in Henry County where 17,000 customers were without power Friday night.

Unlike the December storm, most folks were prepared for this one, at home, and not trying to get home from work as was the case with the December 19th blizzard. Snow is expected to continue Saturday but will begin tapering off in the afternoon and evening with partly cloudy skies after midnight. Snowfall totals will come in short of the 2 feet predicted due to much of the precipitation last night falling as sleet and freezing rain. We update here often, but for up to the minute updates, become a Nelson Mag friend on Facebook over at: http://www.facebook.com/NelsonCounty Another storm, with less impact, is expected to affect the area by Tuesday! Yep, it’s true!

Nelson County, Virginia
As we have been forecasting for the past several days, a major snowstorm started around daylight Friday and is expected to continue until Saturday night when the snow will finally end from west to east.

To make matters worse, winds are expected to pick up after midnight Friday into Saturday, blowing the heavy wet snow and increasing the likelihood of power outages across the region. As of 11:30 AM Friday morning, CVEC had no outages reported and all circuits were functioning normally.

Roads have become slick and hazardous all across Nelson and the surrounding area with several accidents already being worked just before the noon hour.

Look for snow to increase in intensity throughout the afternoon into tonight, with continued heavy snowfall.

Winter Storm Warning : EXPIRED : Major Heavy Snow Expected! : 2.5.10

Nelson County, Virginia
If you haven’t made preparations for the winter storm advancing on Nelson and much of Virginia, you are probably out of time. A major debilitating snow storm will affect much of the area over the next 24-36 hours. A Winter Storm Warning is calling for 20-28 inches of heavy wet blanketing snow across Nelson and much of the state.

A message in red on the NWS site highlighting the severity of impending storm.
A message in red on the NWS site highlighting the severity of impending storm.

Nelson County Public Schools as well as just about every other school within miles are closed today. UVa closed it’s campus for the first time since 2003 due to the approaching storm.

Central Virginia Electric Coop has it’s crews on standby as this storm has the potential to cause widespread power outages since it will be a wet, heavy, blanketing snow. TIger Fuel is also warning people that heat with propane to make sure their vent pipes do not get clogged from deep snow next to the exterior walls of houses.

The snow will begin just before or around daylight and get heavier thoroughout the day and into the nighttime hours Friday. The heavy snow will continue until Saturday evening with a total potential of 20-28 inches. The mountains may well see more than that.

We will continually update conditions here and often on our Facebook page. Not a friend, joing us by clicking here.
