Sounds of The Beatles filled the air over the vineyards at Delfosse this past Saturday afternoon and evening October 9th. Abbey Road played for their first time at the east Nelson County vineyard and winery. A special thanks to Kendall Sterling for the pics!

It was a picture perfect afternoon and evening over The Columbus Day weekend to sit outdoors and enjoy the wine, music, and food.

Present: Ms. Emily Pelton, Mr. Natt Hall, Mr. Bennett Saunders, Mr. Alphonso Taylor, Mr. Greg Kelly (Staff: Ms. Maureen Kelley)

Absent: Mr. Erwin Berry

TURMAN TYE BOND ISSUE: Ms. Kelley reported that the attorneys and applicants are working through the resolutions. She noted that Turman Tye River has hired employees and is purchasing equipment for the business. (Note: Turman Tye River has purchased the former Taylor-Ramsey building in Arrington, plans to operate a wood processing facility and has applied for $1.3 million in revenue bonds to allow the company to secure interest-free financing.

MOUNTAIN VIEW BREWERY: Ms. Kelley reported that Mr. Hale and Mr. Bruguiere will serve as a Board of Supervisors’ committee to review the applicant’s request for tax abatement. She reported that County, CVEC, NC Service Authority staff and the applicant have met to determine what options exist to deal with the effluent generated by the applicant’s brewing process. She noted that engineers will continue to work on the issue but said that NCSA feels that the affluent will have to be pre-treated to residential levels.

Mr. Hall asked whether that requirement would make the Business Park location less competitive. Ms. Kelley said that it does make other locality packages more attractive but that the county is working with the applicant. Mr. Kelly said that the applicant seems to feel that there is strong county support for the project and he noted that no one has final numbers on anything yet – not the applicant nor the Service Authority.

Mr. Taylor said that this situation seems to raise the question as to whether there are areas of the county that can support business. Mr. Kelly agreed, asking what the EDA can do with a business that wants more than “sinks and toilets”.

Ms. Kelley suggested that the EDA might want to review and comment on the Comprehensive Plan update. After discussion, members agreed to hold a work session to review and consider the Comp Plan – focusing on items that affect the county’s ability to attract business, including transportation, designated growth areas, areas with infrastructure, etc. They directed staff to arrange for the appropriate attendees and date for a work session.

With no new business or public comment, the meeting was adjourned.

Nelson County, Virginia

This past Thursday afternoon, October 7th, GRASP (Great Aspirations Scholarship Program) officially kicked off their program in the Nelson County High School. GRASP is a collaborative educational opportunity along with the Community Foundation Central Blue Ridge. GRASP is a non-profit organization specializing in helping students and their families, regardless of financial resources, to develop an educational plan for after high school. GRASP’s professional financial aid counselors work in high schools and private settings, without charge to students and families, to assist in overcoming financial and motivational challenges to the goal of higher education.

Wintergreen Real Estate Company in Nellysford is a sponsor of the initiative in Nelson County High School.

“The opportunity for students in Nelson County to have an extra resource to help them seek funding for college or trade school is huge. With the current economic climate and the rising costs of higher education, it is clear that local students can benefit from leveraged financial aid assistance so that they may pursue educational opportunities beyond high school,” says Becky Kohler, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge.

A reception was held this past Thursday night at WREC in Nellysford to officially announce the kickoff in the Nelson County High School.

GRASP strives to provide every high school student with an equal opportunity for continuing education, regardless of financial or social circumstances. Founded in 1983 by Virginia State Senator Walker Stosch and Dr. Raymond Garguilo, it helps students develop educational plans for after high school by placing a financial aid advisor in local schools to work alongside school staff to leverage financial aid opportunities for colleges and trade schools.

After several days of cool and many times cloudy weather, sunny skies and much warmer temperatures are on the way back. A few sprinkles fell across the area late Wednesday and last night. Temps will near 80° this weekend with sunny days. Many afternoons will be well into the 70’s.

The next chance for rain is about a week away.
