The fall colors in Nelson County are reaching peak, particularly in the higher elevations. Ann Strober of Nellysford sent us some of her beautiful images taken near Crabtree Falls in the southern party of the county.

Brilliant fall colors fill the landscape.

Though many weeks of fall colors remain, rains, wind and impending frosts will take their toll on the colors in the coming days.

Nelson County, Virginia
Most anyone living along the Blue Ridge Parkway will know Lynn Coffey and her successful long run with Backroads Magazine from 1981 to 2006. Lynn’s publication is one that Oakland Museum of Rural History is preserving. We first told you about the gift she is giving that includes all of the Backroads issues from start to finish. NCL also provided entire back issues of the magazine since it was founded.

In our August 2010 printed edition Lynn asked for your help in locating some of the missing issues. Lynn still lacks a few of the old issues and continues asking for your help in finding copies she can donate to the museum for preservation.

Here’s what Lynn needs:
March 1984
October 1985
Feb & Mar 1986
August 1988
July 1991
Jan 1992

If you have any of these lying around or know someone that does, give Lynn a call at: 540.949.0329 for more info and to arrange pickup or mailing expense.

We also hear rumor that Lynn is working on another book that’s soon to be released, a sequel to her original Backroads book released late last year that we told you about in December 2009.

Stay tuned!

It’s been a very tough year for Nelson County High Govs football. This past Friday night the Govs lost another game to Dan River High by a score of 20-41. This puts the NCHS Govs season record at 0-6. In spite of Friday’s night’s loss, the alhletic department at NCHS got some very good news. Danita Harris with Wachovia/Wells Fargo Bank in Nellysford presented a check for $1500.00 to the school.

Thanks again to our NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura for making the trip over to grab these shots!

Update 10.22.10 – The Java Depot and Deli opened for business on Thursday 10.21.10. So drop on by and see them.

Original post from 10.15.10
For weeks the mystery of who will be reopening Java Depot has been a well kept secret. No longer! Edith Fisher of Nelson County recently purchased the restaurant located at the intersection of 664 & 151 across the lot from Devils Backbone Brewing. We caught up with Edith late Friday as Boar’s Head was delivering a new deli case.

Edith tells us that her emphasis will be on serving local customers, but also certainly the many thousands of visitors to Nelson each year.

Java Depot was the most recent operation opening in the old Arrington Depot back in June of 2009. They closed a little over a year later in July 2010.

The historic depot originally opened as Sparrow’s Restaurant back in May of 2008.

We’ll have much more about Edith and her opening in our November 2010 printed issue out in about 10 days, be watching!

Amy Winter is sooooooo very happy about this! 🙂 At least we think so!
