“Virginia State Police responded to a fatal plane crash that occurred Sept. 14, 2022 in Albemarle County.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m.,  Albemarle County received a distress call from a pilot. Despite efforts to direct the pilot to land at the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport, the private, single-engine aircraft was unable to make it and crashed into a wooded area near Plank Rd. and Stillhouse Creek Rd. The impact of the crash caused the Piper fixed-wing aircraft to catch fire. State Police Aviation assisted ground crews with locating the wreckage.

On Monday, Sept. 19, 2022, the Office of the Medical Examiner notified state police that it had positively confirmed the pilot’s identity. The pilot, Kevin J. Esh, 30, of New Holland, Penn., was the plane’s only occupant.

The aircraft had taken off from Blue Ridge Regional Airport in Martinsville, Va. and was headed to Pennsylvania.

State police notified the NTSB and FAA. The NTSB is now the primary agency investigating the crash.

State police has notified the NTSB and FAA. Both are en route to the scene to conduct an investigation.

BRL in conjunction with our media partners over at CBS19 News in Charlottesville have been able to confirm crews are investing an overnight plane crash in Albemarle County.

Around 11:20 pm Wednesday night a person contacted Albemarle County authorities reporting a very low flying plane in the area Burnt Mill Road. They believed the plane to be in distress and think it crashed within a close range to their home.

Thursday morning Albemarle County Police confirmed to CBS19 News that a small plane had crashed In the Stillhouse Creek Road / Miller Lake area.

There is no word on injuries or other details at this time.

The investigation is now being handled by Virginia State Police.

Sept. 25-29 traffic shift will allow reconstruction of Rt. 151 intersection approach
CULPEPER — The traffic detour planned at the roundabout construction project at U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 151 (Critzer Shop Road) has been postponed a week. The delay will allow the completion of construction necessary to facilitate the detour routes.
The detour will now begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 25, and will be in place until 6 a.m. Sept. 29. The detour is necessary to reconstruct the roundabout approach on Route 151 to meet the elevation of the new roundabout.
During the detour, traffic turning from U.S. 250 onto Route 151 will be detoured to Route 750 (Old Turnpike Road) and then to Route 803 (Goodloe Lane) and back onto Route 151. A section of Route 750 and all of Route 803 will be converted to one-way traffic during the detour.

Northbound traffic on Route 151 will continue to the current U.S. 250 intersection to turn left or right on to U.S. 250. Local traffic on Route 151 between Route 803 and U.S. 250 will be able to proceed north or south on Route 151. Local traffic on Route 803 will need to continue south to access Route 151 and U.S. 250.

During the detour, flaggers at the U.S. 250/Route 151 intersection and U.S. 250 and Old Turnpike Road will direct drivers to the detours. Message boards on the adjacent roads will provide advance notice of the traffic pattern change. Drivers should slow down and use extreme caution when approaching the project work area since the detour may result in more congestion than usual.
The roundabout project will replace the current signal-controlled intersection at U.S. 250 and Route 151. The location has a significant crash history and the roundabout will improve safety and reduce congestion, particularly during high-volume travel times. It will also correct deficiencies in the roadway alignment and manage vehicle speeds, both of which have been identified as contributing factors in some crashes.

The U.S. 250/Route 151 roundabout project isone of six improvements in a “bundle” of projects in Albemarle County. Curtis Contracting Inc. of West Point, Va. is delivering the $28.5 million design-build contract. Four of the projects: modifications to the Interstate 64 interchange at U.S. 29, improvements to the ramp on northbound U.S. 29 at the Fontaine Avenue exit, a connection from Rio Mills Road to Berkmar Drive, and a roundabout at Route 20 (Stony Point Road) and Route 649 (Proffit Road) are complete.

The remaining two, the 250/151 roundabout and the diverging diamond interchange at I-64 and U.S. 250 (Richmond Road) at Pantops, are scheduled for completion in February 2023.

83-hour traffic pattern shift will allow reconstruction of Rt. 151 intersection approach

VDOT CULPEPER DISTRICT

A traffic detour will be put in place at the roundabout construction project at U.S. 250 (Rockfish Gap Turnpike) and Route 151 (Critzer Shop Road) beginning at 7 p.m. Sept. 18. The following is a list of highway work that may affect traffic in the Staunton transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton District consists of 11 counties from the Alleghany Highlands to the northern Shenandoah Valley: Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren.

Scheduled work is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. When traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

“At 3:48 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 30, 2022), Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash in Augusta County.  A tractor-trailer traveling north on Interstate 81 ran off the left side of the interstate and overturned in the median.

The driver, Alex Calhoun of New Cumberland, Penn., was transported to UVA Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

State police issued Calhoun a summons for making an unsafe lane change.

The tanker contained a flammable liquid and was damaged in the crash. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) and county fire department responded to the scene to manage and mitigate the containment and clean up of the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.

STAUNTON – (3 p.m.) Both northbound lanes of Interstate 81 have reopened in Augusta County following cleanup and recovery from an early morning tractor trailer crash. The incident took place about 4 a.m. today (Tuesday, August 30) near mile marker 211 in the Greenville area. The truck’s cargo included a flammable powder, so incident response required hazardous-materials removal before travel lanes could reopen.

Motorists using northbound I-81 in northern Rockbridge County and southern Augusta County should be alert for lingering traffic congestion during the late-afternoon hours.

STAUNTON – (1:45 p.m.) The right lane of northbound Interstate 81 in Augusta County has reopened following cleanup from a tractor trailer crash and hazardous-materials spill. The incident took place about 4 a.m. today (Tuesday, August 30) and required the closure of northbound I-81 near mile marker 211 in the Greenville area.

The northbound I-81 detour at exit 200 has been lifted. Motorists should continue to expect significant backups on I-81 and Route 11 in northern Rockbridge County and southern Augusta County until the interstate fully reopens and congestion eases.

VDOT STAUNTON 

(5:30 a.m.) Northbound Interstate 81 is closed in Augusta County due to a tractor trailer crash with hazardous materials spill near mile marker 211 in the Greenville area. The incident was reported to the Virginia Department of Transportation about 4 a.m. today (Tuesday, August 30). Both northbound lanes will remain closed until hazmat cleanup is complete.

Northbound I-81 traffic is detoured at exit 200 (Fairfield) in Rockbridge County. Drivers will follow Route 710 (Sterrett Road) east and then Route 11 north into Augusta County for about 13 miles, and rejoin I-81 northbound at exit 213.

VDOT advises motorists to expect major delays in southern Augusta County and northern Rockbridge County on northbound I-81 and Route 11. Avoid this area if possible.

So Long FP – Nellysford Legend Passes (Updated 8.1.22 With Service Info)
FP Phillips (FP) seen in this October 2008 photo I took of him driving across the parking lot in front of his carwash and Basic Necessities. FP was a permanent fixture around the Nellysford area and known by thousands. FP passed away on Friday July 22, 2022, after complications from heart surgery.

I remember the very first time I met FP. It was either late 99 or early 2000 shortly before moving to Nelson permanently. He was behind the counter of the old Valleymont Grocery he owned in Nellysford. He was working on a crossword puzzle as he often did.

Once we moved here for good FP was still behind that counter working on those crosswords and dispensing wisdom to customers that would come through. From locals to visitors, everyone knew FP. His family has been part of the Nelson backdrop for decades. Wintergreen Hardware, Blue Ridge Pig, and many more, just to name a few places folks would be familiar with today. FP’s siblings, and other relatives are still part of the legacy. FP leaves behind 3 wonderful children of his own as well.

FP could be quiet until you got to know him, then he would open up and tell jokes that would fill the air with laughter. He was major intelligent often discussing history, politics and medical procedures with me right on the parking lot of the car wash.

One of the biggest compliments FP ever gave me was on that very parking a few years after our kids came along. I was at Basic Necessities most days back then. He saw me loading up the kids as I often did once we finished eating. He said, “Tommy you have a beautiful family there. You’re doing it right, being with them. They grow so fast. Don’t forget that.” He’s right, they do.

FP joins a growing list of people now gone. People we’ve come to know over the nearly 2 decades living here. Ones we have been honored to call friends.

Time marches on and losing people that have become so familiar in our daily lives is inevitable. Yet, that still doesn’t make it easy or less sad.

FP, you will be missed. Not seeing you on that tractor hauling hay down 151 or sitting behind the counter at the hardware store is going to be so very odd. But I am so very glad I was able to know you and speak to you often over the years.

Fly high and rest in peace FP.

“CVEC is continuously working to maintain a safe and reliable transmission and distribution system for our members.

Construction of the transmission line to the Wintergreen substation is progressing well and crews must now change out the poles where the Wintergreen tap connects to the main line. In order to do this safely, CVEC has planned two separate outages* that will affect the Wintergreen, Laurel Springs, and Peggy’s Pinch substations.

The first outage will take place on Monday, July 18, beginning at 11:00pm and will last approximately six hours. A second 6-hour outage will take place on Monday, July 25, beginning at 11:00pm to safely replace additional poles and equipment on the main line.

In the event of inclement weather, the outages will take place on Tuesday, July 19 and Tuesday, July 26, both beginning at 11:00pm.

The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a

* Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
Western Connecticut
District Of Columbia
Northern Delaware
Maryland
New Jersey
Southeast New York
Eastern Pennsylvania
Northern Virginia
Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia
Coastal Waters

* Effective this Monday afternoon and evening from 145 PM until
1000 PM EDT.

* Primary threats include…
Scattered damaging wind gusts to 70 mph likely
A tornado or two possible

SUMMARY…Thunderstorms will intensify this afternoon along a
corridor from northern Virginia into southeast New York. The
stronger cells will pose a risk of locally damaging wind gusts.

The severe thunderstorm watch area is approximately along and 45
statute miles either side of a line from 25 miles south southeast of
Elkins WV to 25 miles east of Poughkeepsie NY. For a complete

REMEMBER…A Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch area.
Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for threatening
weather conditions and listen for later statements and possible
warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally do produce
tornadoes.
