AGRITOURISM WORKSHOP SET FOR INTERESTED ENTREPRENEURS

Throughout Virginia, farms are inviting visitors to tour a vineyard, enjoy hayrides, visit a barnyard, eat ice cream made from the local dairy’s milk, and discover that goats are not dogs with horns. If you have or are considering agritourism as part of your business plan for your farm, you will want to attend the Agritourism: It’s More than a Farm Tour workshop.

Presented by the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, and Virginia Tourism Corporation in partnership with Nelson County-Virginia Cooperative Extension office, Nelson County Economic Development Authority, Central Virginia Small Business Development Center, and Thomas Jefferson Partnership for Economic Development, Agritourism: It’s More Than a Farm Tour is scheduled for Wednesday, January 12, at The Nelson Center, 8445 Thomas Nelson Highway, Lovingston, Virginia 22949 beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding around 4 p.m.

During the workshop, participants will gather information on agritourism possibilities, liability issues, marketing strategies, electronic media as a marketing tool, and customer service strategies. Whether you’re interested in equine festivals, a corn maze, pick-your-own berries, a pumpkin patch, or an enterprise of your own design, this agritourism workshop will help you develop a viable plan.

The workshop is free, but you must register by Friday, January 7, 2011.

To register contact www.cvsbdc.org or call 434-295-8198 by Friday, January 7, 2011.

For more information on agritourism programs, please contact Dr. Martha A. Walker, Virginia Cooperative Extension, by phone at 434-766-6761 or by e-mail at walker53@vt.edu.

If you are a person with a disability and desire any assistive devices, services or other accommodations to participate in this activity, please contact Martha A. Light Snow & Icy Roads Arrive Across Area

Nelson County, Virginia
It waited until just about dark, but some light snow began falling across Nelson County and much of Central Virginia Tuesday evening. Predictions of snow starting earlier didn’t happen as two different areas of precipitation either fell apart before arriving or missed Nelson altogether. Light freezing drizzle also added to hazardous driving causing isolated accidents in Nelson but numerous accidents along I-64 in Albemarle.

Nelson County Public Schools (VA) will operate on a two hour delayed schedule on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 due to the potential for icy roads during the early morning hours.

Look for light snow and freezing drizzle to continue early Tuesday night before tapering off around midnight. Accumulation of 1 inch or less are expected. A Winter Weather Advisory previously issued for the area by NWS in Sterling was dropped, but make no mistake roads in the area are hazardous in many locations. Use caution driving.

Winter Weather Marches Toward Virginia : Maps Updated 9:30 AM EST 1.11.11

The estimated snowfall coverage for Monday into Tuesday via NWS.

Nelson County, Virginia
We’re still watching a winter storm system head toward Virginia that should start affecting Nelson County overnight Monday into Tuesday. As of late Sunday evening, it does not appear this will be a major winter storm for our immediate area. We will likely get snow, but not tremendous amounts. As always, with any winter storm that is dependent on the track of a coastal low, movement east or west by just 50 miles could have a big impact on that.

Image ©2011 Wxrisk.com has put out this easy to understand map of possible snowfall across Virginia. Updated 1.10.11 at 6:15 PM

I highly suggest you follow David Tolleris over at his Wxrisk Facebook page. This guy is good and knows his stuff. One of my favorites I always look to for info comparisons.

Accuweather.com talks more about the effects here, and here on the approaching storm.

Bottom line, as of Sunday evening this doesn’t look to be a major blow to Nelson and Central Virgina. That doesn’t mean it won’t cause travel problems, we’ll have to see.

I’ll be updating throughout the day Monday and Monday night so keep checking back often!

Near Nellysford
Nelson County, Virginia

Gusty winds and dry conditions made for a brief, but scary fire early Saturday afternoon just outside of Nellysford on Truslow’s Lane. Fire crews from Wintergreen, Rockfish Valley FD, Faber and VA Dept of Forrester all initially responded to the fire burning in a field not far from the intersection of Berry Hill Road and Truslow’s Lane.

Crews from Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire Department quickly layout fire hoses to fight Saturday afternoon's fire on January 8, 2011.
Crews from this brush truck wade off into the smoke to put out the flames from the brush fire.
A Rockfish Valley Fire brush truck is directed in to the fifre Saturday afternoon on Truslow's Lane.
A member of The Rockfish Valley Fire Department gets ready to energize the hoses to fight the fire.

In less than 45 minutes the fire was totally under control.

Excellent work from all of the fire crews on the scene!

Hope we haven’t left anyone out that was there helping out. If so, let us know!
