Updated 3:30 PM : 12.28.22 : Multiple Deaths Near Schuyler, Virginia – Water Rescue / Recovery

0

Approximate area of the water recovery taking place near Schuyler, Virginia.

Schuyler
Nelson County, VA

Updated at 3:30 pm 12.28.22 with official VSP release / update:

“ At 11:41 a.m. Tuesday (Dec. 27), the Virginia State Police was alerted to a submerged vehicle in the Rockfish River near the intersection of Bridgeport Lane and Johnson Hollow in Nelson County. State police is still working to determine the exact date the vehicle was washed off the road.

At this point in the investigation, it appears that a 1997 Toyota 4Runner tried to cross the flooded Rockfish River at a low river crossing on Bridgeport Lane and was swept away by the strong current. The crossing is on private property.

Two individuals, an 11-year-old male and a 17-year-old male, were located deceased on the riverbank.

Once the vehicle was retrieved from the river, a 30-year-old male was found inside.

The VSP Search and Recovery Team, VSP Aviation Division, Virginia Department of Emergency Management search teams, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources and the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office continue to search for two more individuals believed to have been passengers in the vehicle.

None of the individuals were related. The three that have been recovered have been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for autopsy, examination and positive identification.

The incident remains under investigation.

We will not release the names until the ME has confirmed the identities and next of kin have been notified.

Updated 2:30 PM with additional victims:

BRL has been able to independently confirm that 3 people have been found dead in the water recovery effort near Schuyler, Virginia. Crews are looking for two additional victims believed to have perished. At this time it’s believed there is an adult male, and four children, but two of the victims have not been located as of Wednesday, midafternoon. We know the identity of the adult male and word has swept across social media in Nelson. We will not publish any victim names until Virginia State Police have released them.

And Now The Thaw!

0
Photo Courtesy of Wintergreen Fire & Rescue : Subzero temperatures for the past several days are giving way to a thaw and that’s causing a lot of pipes that froze to burst. This was a unit on the mountain at Wintergreen. It was posted to the fire & rescue page on Monday.

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

Temps below freezing, and some even below zero in the higher elevations, caused lots of frozen pipes. Once the temps stared nudging above freezing that started the bursted pipes.

Frozen and bursted pipes caused more than just water damage. As WF&R posted below, it became necessary to relocate residents from an apartment complex that was flooded from bursted pipes.

A much bigger thaw is on the way this week with temps making it to around 60° by the New Year Weekend.

Power Outages Cropping Up Across The Area Due To High Winds

0
From CVEC Outage App : As of 11:20 AM just under 4000 customers were reported without power through the CVEC app. Friday – 12.23.22 That number has climbed to within a half hour. (Click image above for the latest updates)

Central Virginia Blue Ridge

High winds coupled with a couple of inches of rain or, more in some locations, has setup the scenario for power outages. As of 11:15 AM Friday morning just under 4000 customers were reported without power via CVEC.

Additional outages were being reported on adjacent systems.

On the mountain at Wintergreen a 38 MPH wind gust has already been measured with temps already in the single digits. That’s producing wind chills well below zero.

A screenshot of one weather station at Wintergreen just after 11 AM – Friday 12.23.22 (click on the image above for the latest temperature and wind updates from that station)

Down below our BRL-Maple Brook Farm station had recorded a 30 MPH wind gust as of 11:20 AM.

Winds will continue for much of the day but will eventually ease up some overnight into the weekend. But temps remain extremely cold until roughly Tuesday when we break freezing.

The 13th Annual 12 Days of Christmas on Nelson 151 Returns

0

December 18, 2022 – December 31, 2022

Nelson 151 will host its 13th Annual 12 Days of Christmas fundraiser beginning on Sunday, December 18, 2022 and culminating on Saturday, December 31, 2022. A check presentation will occur in mid-January 2022 to this year’s donation recipients, Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Central Virginia Farm Works Initiative.

Each year, Nelson 151 members come together during the holiday season to raise funds for local charitable and civic organizations and since the inception of this fundraising initiative, 12 Days of Christmas has collectively raised and donated over $30,000 to area non-profits benefitting the Nelson County community.

The broader Central Virginia community is invited to join in celebrating the holiday season while raising funds by visiting member locations on their chosen “Days of Giving” where a portion of the day’s sales will go towards the donations to these organizations.

“The past year has blessed the Nelson 151 corridor yet again with a vibrant business environment and as such, it is our turn to give back to the causes that benefit out area and make Nelson County a great place to live, work and play. We look forward providing financial support to Rockfish Valley Volunteer Fire & Rescue which provides vital safety and medical services to our community. We will also bring a new group into the circle of causes that we support with Central Virginia Farm WORKS Initiative, which provides important resources to the community of agricultural workers who are integral to annual harvest and running the many farm operations vital to agritourism.” -Lindsay Dorrier III, Nelson 151 President

The Morning After – Ice!

Ice is everywhere up top in the mountains! John Taylor on Devils Knob at Wintergreen sent us this photo early Friday morning. Pretty much everything is encased in ice from Thursday’s freezing rain. Friday – December 16, 2022

We told you about the freezing rain even on Thursday in this roundup.

Skies cleared overnight Thursday, but freezing fog and black ice became a real problem along highways across the area. Amherst County closed schools again on Friday. And, crews were still dealing with ice taking down power lines in some locations.

Aside from those power and travel woes, the sunshine on Friday made the ice left behind pop!

We get plenty of sunshine for the next few days with temperatures slowly getting colder into early next week then the temps really take a nosedive as we head toward Christmas. There’s also the chance we deal with a winter storm late next week. More as we get closer.

Freezing Rain and Icy Conditions In Part Of Area Closes Schools For Some

Nelson County, Virginia

By Tommy Stafford

Predictions of freezing rain and icing conditions happened around daylight Thursday morning. That caused Nelson County Public Schools to make the decision to close for the day, as did nearby Augusta.

While most of the roads down in the valley portions of the county were ok, it was in the mountains where the roads were becoming slick, spurring the decision to cancel schools.

Sally Walters from Devils Knob at Wintergreen Resort (appx 3500′) sent us this photo around 8:30 Thursday morning, calling it a “Winter Wonderland!”

There were a few traffic accidents across the area likely due to wet and sometimes icing conditions.

All in all it affected the higher elevations more than anywhere else.

Many of our Facebook followers were talking about conditions across the area.

All in all the majority of problems have been encountered in the higher elevations. As the day wears on most places change to just a plain old rain. But some spots in the highest of elevations in the mountains will be very slow, if at all, to get above freezing.

Delay or adjust travel plans since roads may become hazardous during icy conditions

CULPEPER — Crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation are on the roads this morning, prepared to respond to any reports of icing on highways. Rain is falling across the Piedmont region and is forecast to change to freezing rain during the morning commuting hours in the counties closest to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Freezing rain can quickly make roads icy and slick and is extremely hazardous for all drivers, even in four-wheel and all-wheel-drive vehicles.

Ice is likely to form first in areas where pavement temperatures are lowest. These spots include bridges, overpasses, and ramps and at elevations such as the mountain passes on Interstate 64 and U.S. 250 in Albemarle County, U.S. 33 at Swift Run Gap in Greene County, U.S. 211 at Thornton Gap and U.S. 522 at Chester Gap in Rappahannock County.

If travel is necessary this morning, drivers should pay attention to local weather forecasts and road conditions and plan to use extreme caution as road conditions may deteriorate quickly. As air temperatures fall, pavement temperatures will also drop, creating the potential for icy conditions through Thursday morning.

VDOT crews are working across the state to respond to the storm. In the nine counties of the Culpeper District crews have been on duty overnight and will spread salt and sand to improve traction and melt ice when freezing precipitation begins. Since the storm began as rain brine was not used for this event since the rain would have washed it off the roads, rendering it ineffective.

SOME FREEZING RAIN REPORTED IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY – WITH MORE ON THE WAY

STAUNTON – (4 a.m.) A mix of rain, freezing rain and sleet is falling early Thursday morning, December 15, in the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. As of 4 a.m., the northern valley is reporting some icy spots, and freezing conditions are expected to overspread the region throughout the morning. Hazardous conditions are likely for the Thursday morning commute. The Virginia Department of Transportation advises motorists to avoid all unnecessary travel.

Crews from the VDOT Staunton District are on duty throughout the 11-county region to treat roadways with salt and abrasives. Interstates and other major highways are treated first, followed by secondary roads and subdivision streets.

Bridges and overpasses freeze first, sometimes creating an icy glaze even when roadway approaches are just wet. Those who must drive should use extreme caution and always wear a seatbelt.

In addition to freezing rain and sleet, strong and gusty winds are expected on Thursday. Motorists should be alert for downed trees, branches or utility lines. VDOT has tree-removal contractors on standby to help keep roadways clear.

Statewide road conditions and traffic cameras are found at http://www.511Virginia.org. Roads with snow conditions will be marked minor, moderate, severe or closed.

Road condition definitions:

  • Closed – Road is closed to all traffic.
  • Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.
  • Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
  • Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush. Driving with caution is recommended.
