The Historical Society of Nelson County Presents Its 21st Nelson County Historic Home Tour and the Virginia Historic Highway Marker Unveiling— “Boyhood Home of the Rev. Dr. W.A.R. Goodwin, Father of Colonial Williamsburg”

Saturday, May 14, 2011
10:30 a.m.—Christ Episcopal Church Goodwin Marker Unveiling and Program
11:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.—Tour of homes and properties in the Norwood and Wingina communities

In the picture above, Christ Episcopal Church was built in 1844–45 on land donated by the Cabell family at New Market (Nor- wood). This historic Episcopal church in the Nelson Parish of the Dioceses of Virginia produced several young men who became clergymen and missionaries. The first minister for the church was Rev. Mr. F.D. Goodwin, grandfather of W.A.R. Goodwin. As a youth growing up in New Market, W.A.R. (Will) attended Christ Church where his mother was Sunday School superintendent, and his father was senior warden. Another minister from Christ Church was the Rev. Dr. William Cabell Brown. While a missionary, he translated the Prayer Book into Portuguese, and later became a Bishop of the Diocese of Virginia.

In recent years, services were held the second and fourth Sundays, until the mid-1990s, when declining membership forced the church to close. For a few years, a portion of the building was used as a U.S. Post Office for the Norwood community. The original pews and pulpit furniture remain in the church.

The building was purchased in 2010 with plans for restoration and to become “Christ Church—A Center for the Arts” for the surrounding communities. The church will be open for the May 14th tour.

North Branch Student Wins National Award

Photos By Marcie Gates : ©2011 www.nelsoncountylife.com : Audrey Wood, a 7th grader at North Branch School, reads her letter that was one of only six picked in a national competition of 69,000.

Afton
Nelson County, Virginia

Just 6 in the country were picked. Audrey Wood of Waynesboro, a student at North Branch School, was one of them. To boot, NBS will be getting a $10,000 Reading Promotion Grant from Target Stores. Audrey picked her school to receive the grant money.

The competition was part of Letters About Literature. The program is sponsored by the Library of Congress and Target Stores.

In selecting Audrey’s letter to J.M. Barrie, author or Peter Pan, judges wrote that her letter had “grace and insight. She began with magic, explained gracefully how the magic of Peter Pan was part of her childhood with her grandparents, and then carried the feeling of magic through to her present life. Her images were lovely,” said Susan Coleman, Director with The Virginia Center for the Book and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. They administer the Virginia state program.

Erin Walton Comes Home To Nelson County This Weekend

0
Mary McDonough who played Erin Walton on the long running CBS television series, The Waltons, will be in Schuyler The Waltons' Mountain Country Story this weekend.

Schuyler
Nelson County, Virginia

By Jennie T. Williams

Many Nelsonians (and, to be fair, many Americans) of a certain age (and, to be inclusive, of pretty much all ages) grew up learning important life lessons from watching The Waltons on television.

Mary McDonough grew up learning those same important life lessons from being a Walton on television.
And now she’s written a book to help us non-Waltons feel even more like part of the family.

Mary, who played Erin Walton on the long-running television series based on the writings of hometown hero Earl Hamner, was cast as Erin when she was just 10 years old. Though the show (which aired from 1971 to 1981) and movies were set in 1930s and 1940s Nelson County, Mary didn’t set foot in the county until 1992 for a Walton’s reunion. And she hasn’t been able stop coming since.
“I love it!” she said.

Mary will be back 1 p.m. May 14 at Walton’s Mountain Bed & Breakfast in Schuyler to sign copies of her new book, Lessons from the Mountain: What I learned from Erin Walton.

Nelson’s Jacob Allen Competing In National Talent Search

0
Nelson County native, Jacob Allen (now living in California) is competing in a national talent search.

Temecula, California

Anyone that’s been around Nelson for very long will no doubt remember Jacob Allen. For years he was part of Hobojac until the duo finally called it quits and each went out own on their own. Today Jacob lives in California and is working on his solo career.

Jacob is now competing in a national talent search. The Texaco Country Showdown Songwriting Competition. His very own song (Southern Love – play here from is ReverbNation page- top selection) is competing against several other musical artists across the country.

Jacob chatted with us Tuesday night and is asking all of his fans back here on the east coast and in Nelson to cast a vote for him online in the competition. Simply go to the contest page here: http://www.countryshowdown.com/Texaco/contestant.php?id=20021 You’ll have to do a quick registration, but that’s it. Then you can vote and support Jacob in the competition that runs until May 31st 2011. “Once they have voted, they are allowed one vote per contestant per day. The concept is simple, the song with the most votes at the end of May wins the monthly competition. There are six of these. The winners of each month are then judged by a group of Nashville judges and the winning song of the six gets a cash prize and a promotional deal with a publishing company!! It is an awesome opportunity for me. Every vote is key,” Jacob told us Tuesday night.

You can also follow Jacob here on his Facebook page to see what he’s up to these days out west!

Let’s send Jacob to Nashville!!

Spring In The Air Along The Blue Ridge Parkway

NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura, nailed the feel of springtime in the mountains perfectly. His photo shows the beautiful lush green colors coming to life in the higher elevations of Nelson County. While the valley portions are in full green, there are parts of the highest elevations that are still coming to life.

After days and weeks of rain, the first part of the coming week looks dry, mild, and mostly sunny. The next best chance for rain is late this week.
