Nelson County, Virginia

Due to enormous inquires and requests we are re-posting the funeral and obituary information here on Kirstin Dawn Ellis. As you know by now Kirstin lost her life in a tragic auto accident last week. Our thoughts, prayers and wishes of strength are with Kirstin’s family and friends in these difficult days.

Via the Daily Progress on Sunday June 12th.

Kirstin Dawn Ellis, 14, of Truslows Lane, Nellysford, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, as the result of an automobile accident.

She was born on September 25, 1996, in Richmond, a daughter of Keith Andrew Ellis of Nellysford and Melanie Cole Fields of Gastonia, North Carolina.

Kirsten was an “A” honor roll student at Nelson County High School and a member of the Nelson County High School Color Guard. Kirstin also served as manager for the Junior Varsity Soccer Team, Freshman Class President, and was a class clown who was loved by all.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her sister, Ashley Ellis of Nellysford; her paternal grandparents, Tim and Alice Eberwien of Nellysford, and David and Janice Ellis of Midlothian; maternal grandparents, Tammy and David Hogge of Chesterfield, and Joseph and Lori Fields of Powatan; three uncles, Cameron Eberwien of Nellysford, Steven Fields and Austin Jimerson; three aunts, Emma Eberwien of Nellysford, Missy Gershowitz and Andrea Burnham. Kirstin is also survived by a host of friends and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 13, 2011, at Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston, with the Reverend Jim Bushong officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, June 12, 2011, at Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston.

The family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions to the Nelson County High School Marching Band.

Arrangements are by the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston, Virginia, 434-263-4097.

Batesville Store Closed : Everything Being Sold Starting Sunday

2
Photo from www.batesvillestore.com website : The Batesville Store has closed and will begin selling off inventory on Sunday June 12, 2011 after they say state inspectors left them with little choice but to close.

Batesville
Albemarle County, Virginia

Down Greenfield Road and just over the county line The Batesville Store has been operating for decades. Apparently some bad news hit the most recent owners within the past few days. The following message was posted on their website:

Dear Friends of The Batesville Store,

I have some sad news:

The Batesville Store is closed until further notice.

Earlier today two representatives from the state of Virginia showed up at the store without warning, informed us that we were not in compliance with certain state regulations, and gave us basically no choice except to close immediately.

This came as a complete shock to Liza and me. We believed that we had been operating in compliance with all state regulations since we opened in April of 2007, and we received no indication otherwise from anyone representing the state.

In fact, we have been inspected regularly by Warren Ollinger, the representative from the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services who is responsible for inspecting the store, and he has always given us favorable reports on our operation. He never suggested in any way that we would encounter what happened today. The two representatives who showed up this afternoon told us that Mr. Ollinger initiated the complaint and the subsequent review that led to the decision to close us down.

Liza and I intend to explore this matter further. I will let you know by email about any important developments.

We cannot find words to thank you properly for your support for our humble establishment. So I hope a simple “thank you” will suffice for now.

Fondly,

Cid

Then on Saturday (6.11.11) the following constant contact notice was sent out:

MORE DETAILS ON THE CLOSING OF

THE BATESVILLE STORE

AND

HUGE BLOWOUT SALE BEGINS

SUNDAY, JUNE 12

NOON – 7:00 P.M.

Dear Fans of The Batesville Store,

As you know from yesterday’s email, the state has given us no option except to close The Batesville Store.

For the past five years, we’ve attempted to serve the community by keeping this classic, historic country store alive and thriving.Ironically, our success has proven to be our undoing.

Although we have always operated with an eye toward Virginia State Health Department guidelines (and have never been cited for a health code violation of any kind), we were in fact defined by the state as a country store and thus fell under the governance of the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. We were regularly inspected by the Ag Department and were never informed of any significant problems with our operations.

However, the state representatives who suddenly appeared yesterday afternoon and shut us down without warning told us that it was decided (note the passive voice, please) that we do too much business to remain a country store. They went on to say that our only option for remaining open was to convert the store into a restaurant that would comply with all Virginia Health Department regulations.

Our kitchen is basically in compliance with Health Department regulations now. But the legalities of the store’s historic status as well as the limitations of the building itself make it impossible for us to meet the state’s other requirements for operating a restaurant.

We would have to make a host of changes in the facility to stay open legally, but because of a combination of the law and practical realities, we cannot make those changes.

So much to our regret, we are closing The Batesville Store . . .

AND SAYING GOODBYE TO OUR WONDERFUL SUPPORTERS WITH A HUGE BLOWOUT SALE – TAKEAWAY ONLY (NO TABLE SERVICE)

The sale begins tomorrow–Sunday. We will open at noon and close at 7:00 p.m.

EVERYTHING EXCEPT BEER AND WINE IS 50% OFF THE STICKER PRICE

BEER AND WINE . . . BUY ONE, GET ONE OF EQUAL VALUE FOR 50% OFF

When we say “everything,” we mean EVERYTHING.

Everything from the deli and bakery. All of our drinks. All of our groceries. All of our baking and cooking supplies. All of our serving dishes and plastic products and cooking equipment. All of our tables and chairs. All of our baskets. All of our t-shirts and caps.

WE WILL ALSO BE OPEN MONDAY AND TUESDAY NEXT WEEK (OR UNTIL EVERYTHING GOES) FROM NOON UNTIL 7:00 P.M.

THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE TO GET
BATESVILLE STORE FOOD OR
A MOMENTO OF WHAT WAS GENERALLY REGARDED AS THE FINEST COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENT IN ALL OF BATESVILLE

Thank you once again for your ridiculously wonderful support since we opened in 2007.

Fondly,

Cid and Liza

We love the folks at The Batesville Store and wish them well. The community won’t be the same without them in business. 🙁

How We Cover Breaking News & Why

2

Nelson County, Virginia
We get lots of emails and questions here at NCL as to how we cover certain news events and why. We thought it good to have a post explaining the thought process behind our coverage. First, we never cover breaking or hard news in our printed publication. That’s by design. We always wanted Nelson County Life Magazine to be a feature, lifestyle, and recreation publication. Period. Having been on TV covering the hard news side of the business, both Yvette and I know all too well how saturated daily lives become with negative news. There are many daily and weekly area newspapers that do that sort of thing. It’s not anything we really care to ever venture back into. Though, we have been asked thousands of times by many of you over the past 6 or 7 years. While flattering to be asked, we left that side of the business to get away from those types of stories.

When people living in Nelson County, or those coming to visit, open the print edition we want them to read about fun, interesting, or sometimes inspirational stories. Not murders, car wrecks, board meetings, or the like. Again, plenty of other places to get that.

However, on our web side, the very thing you are reading now, we found some years ago there was a tremendous void for quick, responsive information during breaking news situations. This might include severe weather, (remember the blizzard!) criminals on the run that could pose a danger to people living here. Major accidents that would close down roads or greatly impede traffic. Because we are such a multimedia organization, and this is what we did for years and years on major market television, it wasn’t a stretch for us to gear up and provide this service. Sometimes it’s hard to do. Emotional. Just like this past week’s accident here in Nelson that took the life of a wonderful young girl just beginning to embark on her future. Our objective when posting those types of stories, is not to drill down into days and days of followup on how something happened, who was responsible, etc. We try to break the stories and follow as they are happening then leave it to other news organizations to do what they do. And we never post names of victims prematurely. Even if the other guys do, we don’t. We have a family too. We are parents. We constantly update the progress of stories on our Twitter and Facebook feeds.

We so appreciate the 10’s of thousands of you that follow us here each each week on the NCL web edition! We hope you have found it helpful and continue appreciating what we do. Look for more improvements and new feature to be rolled out in the coming months!

After The Storm – At Wintergreen

Photo By Paul Purpura : ©2011 www.nelsoncountylife.com : A quck but intense storm hit up top at Wintergreen late Thursday afternoon. The plants loved the drink of water!

Wintergreen
Nelson County, Virginia

Not everyone saw rain Thursday evening, but the people up on Wintergreen Mountain did. Briefly. But, it was an attention getter for sure. The rain was heavy along with some brief pea sized hail, vivid lightning and thunder, but the amounts weren’t very much. Our gauge over at The Wintergreen Nature Foundation showed .10″ of rain from the quick storm.

There are more chances for scattered thunderstorms right into the upcoming weekend.

Regardless, a nice break from the heat for sure!

“Lunatic Farmer”, Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms, visits Pharsalia

0
You might say Joel Salatin is obsessed with dirt. Here, he holds up a clump of grass as he discusses the carbon cylcle at a dinner and talk held at Pharsalia in Tyro. (Yvette Stafford – © 2011 NelsonCountyLife.com)

Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms came to Pharsalia to preach the gospel of the locavore food movement. Before the talk, guests sunk their teeth into meaty Polyface hot dogs complete with all the fixin’s – or as Joel called the condiments, condominiums. Thumbs up on the Rhubarb crisp, by the way.

The air may have been hot and drippy but the salad was crisp and cold. (Yvette Stafford – © 2011 NelsonCountyLife.com)

Then it was on to a fascinating history lesson in which Salatin compared the antebellum farm operation of William Massie’s Pharsalia estate to modern-day challenges facing farmers who desire to nourish the land and keep it fertile, bucking mainstream industrial agricultural practices.

The self-described lunatic farmer’s latest book, Folks, This Ain’t Normal, is due to be released October 2011.

For nine years in a row Bandfair has been held at Cardinal Point Vineyard & Winery. We’ve sponsored and covered several of them in the past. It’s one of the larger fundraisers for North Branch School. The 2011 Bandfair9 was a total success with perfectly cooperating weather. NCL Contributing writer, Marcie Gates, a NBS alumni, put down the pen and picked up the camera this past Saturday to grab a few shots while there.

Members of The Design chill out waiting on their turn to take the stage at Bandfair 2011.
