Montebello Post Office On List For Possible Closure

0
The post office in the far SW Nelson community of Montebello is on a list for possible closure.

Montebello
Nelson County, Virginia

CBS-19 (Newsplex) is reporting that Montebello is one of the locations being considered by the U.S. Postal Service for possible closure in the near future.

Their story reads:

The Postal Service is considering closing more than 1 in 10 of its retail outlets.

The financially-troubled agency announced Tuesday that it will study 3,653 local offices, branches and stations for possible closing. Most of the offices that face review are in rural areas and have low volumes of business.

Central Virginia post offices being reviewed include:

– Madison County: Hood, Oakpark, Radient, Rochelle, Syria, Wolftown

– Nelson County: Montebello

– Orange County: Burr Hill, Montpelier Station

Coming under review doesn’t necessarily mean an office will close, although. The post office announced in January it was reviewing 1,400 offices for closing. So far 280 have been closed and 200 have finished the review process and will remain open.

Parts Of Nelson Hammered In Monday Afternoon Storm!

Some people didn’t see a drop of rain Monday afternoon, but that wasn’t the case up on the mountain at Wintergreen Resort. They had a very intense thunderstorm with heavy rains and very intense lightning.

A screen shot Monday afternoon just after the storm of our very own weather station over at The Wintergreen Nature Foundation. The mid-afternoon total was 3.77 inches of rain.

Compare that to far less amounts here at NCL and just down the road at Spruce Creek Park just south of Nellysford.

Water made several deep trenches in this sand trap up at Devils Knob from the Monday afternoon storm.

Things will be much better on Tuesday with less humidity and sunny skies!

Up A Tree In Shipman!

Photos Courtesy of Sherri & David Brooks : A mama bear and her two cubs decided to take up temporary residence in a big oak tree at the farm of Gwen Casale in Shipman.

Shipman
Nelson County, Virginia

Gwen Casale’s seen lots of things as a sheep farmer. But she didn’t expect to see what was up a tree Sunday afternoon. “Our herd dogs have a certain alarm bark when something is threatening the sheep. But it’s very unusual to hear that in the afternoon, generally it’s night,” Gwen told us Sunday afternoon.

Gwen dogs treed a mama black bear and her two cubs.

A wider shot shows just how far the bear were up in the tree at Gwen's.

“Shocked. I know there are bears around here and our neighbors have seen them, but we have never seen them here at our place. She started growling, hissing and pawing until we had to get our dogs inside,” Gwen continued.

Gwen contacted the VA Wildlife people who told her the mama and her cubs may stay there overnight, but would eventually come down.

Photo By Gwen Casale: The moma bear can be seen here looking at Gwen as she snapped this very quick shot. The cubs are just out of view.

We sent our NCL East Photographer, Victoria Mininger to Gwen’s to get some closer shots, but by the time she got there, the mama and her cubs we gone!

Don’t think Gwen or her sheep will mind one bit!

It’s been one busy week for several youth groups from area churches. They have been doing volunteer service projects across the county to help out others. “Youths from area churches have been coming together this week to re-gravel a driveway for a family, patch a roof, paint a house, hold a gospel car wash, just to mention a few things,” said Tyler Lucas who was helping coordinate the effort out of Rose Union Baptist Church.

As part of this past week’s effort the youth groups from Rose Union, Woodlands & Christian Fellowship churches helped coordinate a day long food drive this past Saturday at Blue Ridge Grocery in Nellysford, along with Food Lion and IGA in Lovingston. “They’ve been drumming up donations in front of the store asking people to bring out canned goods that will be taken to the Nelson Food Pantry,” Tyler continued. Earlier in the week the groups went to the Nelson Food Pantry to help spruce up and clean the facility.
