Thanks to some quick thinkers a car fire ended up being just a car fire and not something bigger. A vehicle caught on fire at Colleen Exxon Monday afternoon and quickly became a big inferno. Some bystanders pulled the vehicle away from the gas pumps limiting the chances of it spreading.

Nelson Sheriff David Brooks says he’s now confident the gunshot would this morning was self inflicted. “Information and evidence we gathered at this person’s home leads us to believe it was a self inflicted gunshot wound.”
(earlier post) Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks says his department continues their investigation into the events surrounding an early morning shooting of of a Cub Creek Road man. “He showed up at J & K Market early Monday morning with what appeared to be a possible gunshot,” Sheriff Brooks tells NCL. It was unclear at first if the person had been shot or simply beat up. “His left eye was swollen shut and we couldn’t determine is he’d been shot until an exam was performed at UVA. He was unable to answer any questions from officers due to the injury. Doctors there tell us he was shot in the left eye with the bullet lodged in the skull behind the eye, Sheriff Brooks continued.
Deputies have spent the better part of Monday trying to figure out where the exact location of the shooting was. During the afternoon they began searching the person’s home on Cub Creek Rd to see if they could determine anything about the shooting.
Sheriff Brooks is asking anyone that might have information on what happened to contact them at this toll free number: 877 570 8477

You know those crisp fall nights and frost can’t be far away when Wintergreen Performing Arts holds its annual Oktoberfest on the mountain. Our NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura, has made several of these over the years and was back for 2011 this past weekend.
This past weekend's event was a celebration of German culture and food, and beer! 21 different varieties!People attending the event feasted on brats, wursts, German potato salad and kraut, along with American hot dogs and hamburgers. The annual event has become a popular destination for people as summer says so long and fall takes hold across the Blue Ridge Mountains.
People got the opportunity to enjoy the sounds of The Kings of Belmont under the newly completed pavilion at AMV this past Saturday night as the closed out the season for Afton After Hours.

Blue Ridge Medical Center got a nice surprise this week when Devils Backbone Brewing & The Festy’s Justin Billcheck presented a check for over $1700.00 to the program. “We realize the importance of giving back and helping within the county we live and work in,” said Heidi Crandall , Marketing Director for DBBC. The restaurant gave a 25% of its sales on September 13th to the BRMC Dental Program that helps people across the area with dental needs.
Train traffic is back to normal Thursday morning after a truck driving beside the tracks was hit around 6:30 AM. “We got the call about 6:38 AM for a train versus car accident off Cabell Road between Warminster and Fish Pond,” Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets told NCL. WF&R was called to assist other crews from Lovingston and Faber.
Another vehicle found at the crash scene Thursday morning.
Apparently two vehicles, a white truck and a blue one, were being driven along side the tracks when the blue truck hit the train. “The people in both trucks got out without injury and fled the scene,” said Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks. As of 10:30 Thursday morning, the drivers were still at large and had not been located. Sheriff Brooks said the white truck involved had been reported stolen his office earlier in the morning.
The track stayed closed for about 4 hours until the scene was cleared and the investigation completed.

Years ago Wintergreen Fire Chief Curtis Sheets knew there was a looming problem with increased fire potential for people living on a mountain with heavily wooded areas nearby. “Over the last few years we have worked hard to become a safer Firewise Community. Some of the efforts have been assisted through grant dollars,” Chief Sheets tells NCL. Tuesday afternoon representatives from the Virginia Department of Forestry visited Wintergreen to see firsthand the progress that’s been made.
Chief Sheets (center seen through the windshield of an all terrain vehicle) talks to VDOF about the strides made over the past 7-8 years in cleaning up areas to make them safer.
WFD received a grant in excess of $20,000 to help get make the homes and surrounding mountain areas safer in the event of a fire. Much of the emphasis was on landscaping, routine maintenance and cleaning around homes to keep them from being fire prone.
