After 9 grueling miles and 27 unforgiving obstacles that started out on a 33° morning in the mountains at Wintergreen Resort, Team Nelson (TN) conquered! This past Saturday morning TN was in the first flight to hit the course at 8AM sharp. To say we are proud wouldn’t even touch describing it. The team consisted of the absolute most fit, to novices that had never competed in any endurance event. In the end, they helped each other and conquered!

NCL Publisher, Yvette Stafford, got the idea early in 2011 to form a team representing Nelson County. She immediately had 22 people signed up by the time Tough Mudder had sold out the Saturday event. NCL solicited sponsors who made it possible to outfit the team with their own branded t-shirts for the event. Others outside of Team Nelson wanted shirts too. We ordered more! The extra money from those shirts will go to Wintergreen Adaptive Sports. They are big supporters of Wounded Warriors which is what Tough Mudder National supports as well.

We want to thank the Team Nelson sponsors that helped make this happen, you are awesome for helping the team to victory!

Thank these people. Do business with them. We can’t say enough about how great they have been!

We have lots of photos and video from Team Nelson’s trek across the course. So let’s get to it. Scroll down to see it all!

We have a ton of pictures from the course! NCL Photographers Paul Purpura and Hayley Osborne were all over the mountain Saturday grabbing photos. You can view them by clicking on our Facebook image album above. Enjoy!

Paul put together a fantastic slide show of Team Nelson and Tough Mudder. Click the player above to view.

But wait! There’s more! Yvette outfitted herself with a GoPro camera that straps to your chest and videoed the most intimidating obstacles along the way. Nelson 151 sponsored the video segments which are just totally awesome. Our little disclaimer warning, if you are easily offended by naughty language, you may want to pass. They aren’t terrible, but you might hear a bad word here and there. Understandable when jumping into ice water on a 33° morning! Wow!

To see all of the up close and personal videos Yvette shot while on the course at Tough Mudder, just click on the image above from our Nelson County Life Channel over at YouTube!

Thanks to everyone that participated, helped out, and just came to watch and support Team Nelson.

See you there next year!!

Team Nelson did it! They completed a grueling 9 mile course with 27 obstacles at Wintergreen Resort Saturday morning. Temps were hovering around 35° as the team took off across the resort. This is a very preliminary post with many more pictures to follow later this weekend. But we wanted to let you know they made it!

NCL Photographers Paul Purpura and Hayley Osborne were along for the event. We have tons of pictures to go through and Yvette is working on her Go-Pro video that was shot as she took part in Tough Mudder.

It’s here. Tough Mudder, Virginia is happening this weekend at Wintergreen Resort. Yes, you read the caption in Paul’s picture above correctly. 14,000 plus participants will compete in the two day event that runs through Sunday afternoon. That figure does not include friends, spectators, etc.

NCL Publisher, Yvette Stafford, coordinated Team Nelson, a group of 22 participants that will be competing in the event st 8AM Saturday morning. Most of them have been training for the past year or longer for the event.

Photo By Paul Purpura : One of the most feared and craziest obstacles on the TM course is the electroshock. Yep, it's on the course at Wintergreen near the end.

NCL forecaster, Tommy Stafford says the weather be nice and generally sunny for both days, but the mornings up at Wintergreen will start off cold. “We’re talking temperatures between 32-36° around sunrise on Saturday and maybe even a bit colder on Sunday morning. The one saving grace might be some partly cloudy skies moving through that would keep temps up a few degrees. Regardless, it will be cold until later in the morning when sunshine heats things up into the lower 50’s with a SW wind of 5-15 MPH in the mountains.”

We will be updating the event and Team Nelson’s progress on our Facebook page here, and also via our Twitter feed. That’s the way to see the absolute latest updates. Of course we’ll have a huge update later in the day here on NCL. Photographers Paul Purpura and Hayley Osborne are covering it all!

Go Team Nelson!

Nelson County, Virginia

Updated 1.5.12 @ 5:40 PM

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks confirms to NCL that Joshua Lee Hatter, once a deputy with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Department, was sentenced in a Nelson Domestic Court Thursday morning on misdemeanor charges and was bound over to the grand jury on two other felony charges. The court action stems from an October 2011 incident where authorities say he was involved in a domestic dispute. “It’s important that the people of Nelson County know we take an officer breaking the law very seriously. It’s a matter of trust to the public when a person in a position of authority is involved,” Sheriff Brooks said. Brooks immediately fired Hatter in October after formal charges were filed.

In court Thursday Hatter was found guilty on two misdemeanor charges:

-Misdemeanor assault & battery on a family member
-Misdemeanor destroying a telephone line

He was sentenced to 120 days on each count, suspended to 60 days each, for a total sentence of 120 days in jail.

Two additional felony charges remain in place:

-Felony discharge of a firearm in an occupied dwelling
-Felony abduction

Hatter was bound over to the grand jury on those charges for review and probable indictment later this month.

A remaining felony charge of Felony property damage over $1000.00 was dismissed when the court determined the amount of damage did not meet the 1000.00 benchmark.

Former deputy Hatter has been, and continues to be, in jail custody since his October arrest.

Original Story from 10.21.2011
A former Nelson deputy charged with enforcing the law is now on the other side facing charges. 30 year old Joshua Lee Hatter of Lovingston has been charged with a variety of crimes involving what authorities describe as a domestic dispute.

Hatter has been charged with:

-Felony property damage over $1000.00
-Felony discharge of a firearm in an occupied dwelling
-Felony abduction
-Misdemeanor assault & battery on a family member
-Misdemeanor destroying a telephone line

“He was fired after the incident this week and remains in jail as of early Friday afternoon. We have a duty to protect our community even if it’s one of our own, we took the necessary steps in conjunction with the Commonwealth Attorney’s office to make sure the case was properly investigated. Especially since we know the even greater attention would be given since this was an officer of the law,” Nelson Sheriff David Brooks said by telephone Friday afternoon.

Once Hatter makes bond, he will have several other restrictions placed on him in addition to the secured bond. He must wear a GPS tracking ankle bracelet, have no contact with the victim, no alcohol, and not enter Nelson County pending outcome of the case or changes by a judicial order.

This makes the third arrest involving a Virginia police officer recently including one in Danville and another in Bedford County.

Colleen
Nelson County, Virginia

Blue Mountain Brewery, Nelson’s first microbrewery established back in October of 2007 is expanding once again. This is just weeks after opening their new addition to the existing brewery and restaurant in Afton. It roughly doubled in size with the expansion.

Blue Mountain Barrel House and Organic Brewery is a 10,000 square foot production-only facility for the 10 lines of Blue Mountain beer that will be kegged or bottled in 750ml corked bottles and undergo 100% natural refermentation. These beers will be USDA certified organic and will tend toward the more “specialty” end of Blue Mountain’s beer production spectrum. Beers brewed will include the popular Dark Hollow Bourbon-Barrel Aged Stout and Mandolin, but will also introduce new styles such as an imperial pilsner and a barrel-aged Belgian-inspired ale.

Taylor and Mandi's oldest son, Hayden, gives the new project two thumbs up!

The second project, slated for the future, will be a large production brewery of 40-60,000 square feet will focus on the production of the current bottled beer lines, including Full Nelson and Classic Lager. This brewery will help service the large amount of unfulfilled orders from the current beer wholesaler, as well as begin expansion to out-of-state markets. The eventual capacity for this brewery will be 50,000 barrels annually.

“I had talked with Central Virginia Electric Cooperative [the Colleen Business Park land owner] about locating a brewery here as far back as 2004. The site never left my mind as very ideal, and we’re thrilled to finally be making a production brewery in Colleen a reality,” said Taylor.

Taylor also says baring any potential weather delays they will be brewing beer at the new facility in about 4 months from Thursday’s October groundbreaking.

Congrats BMB!

Preps For Tough Mudder Virginia Continue Here In Nelson

Roseland/Wintergreen
Nelson County, Virginia

Just 2-3 days remain before Tough Mudder, VA gets underway on Saturday at Wintergreen Resort. Traffic signs started going up Tuesday in the vicinity of Route 664. That’s the state highway heading up to Wintergreen. Tough Mudder has leased pieces of property at the base of the mountain to accomodate the large numbers of cars that will be parked. Drivers and riders will be shuttled up the mountain in buses that have been rented. “Traffic coordinators have been on our site most of Tuesday getting things ready for parking this weekend,” said Jeff Stone, owner of Wintergreen Winery. Many cars will be parked in an open field in front of the winery in addition to other leased locations nearby.

This weekend anyone will be allowed on 664 as the event is ongoing, but only properly permitted vehicles will be allowed past the Wintergreen gatehouse. Wintergreen property owners, permitted guests, and properly permitted press vehicles will be allowed up. Certificated early participants in Tough Mudder will be allowed up through roughly mid-morning, then later all others will be required to park at the bottom and ride a shuttle bus.

Additional manpower from the Virginia State Police will be on hand in that part of Nelson to assist with the expected huge increase in traffic.
