Stirring the pot at the 2011 UVACC Community Day in Nellysford, VAAn employee of Nellysford's UVACC helps out with some face painting this past Saturday morning at Community Day. Though the kids have a great time, there's always plenty of fun for adults too.
Tough Mudder-Team Nelson was organized by NCL Publisher Yvette Stafford. During the months leading up to the October event, sponsors were secured for the team to outfit everyone with an orange team shirt. Additional shirts were sold to people outside of the team who wanted to show their support. Saturday morning that money from the sale of the shirts was presented to WAS for use in their program locally here at Wintergreen.
Way to go Team Nelson!
By the way, a little birdie tells us 6 of the original Team Nelson members have already signed up for the 2012 event! Stay tuned!

Within the past few days the folks from Eades completed a trip to the heart of Bourbon Country. Kentucky! “Our trip to was designed to meet with industry professionals who could help us identify sources for the used bourbon barrels we will need to age our whisky. We also wanted to identify master distillers we can bring into our project to complement the ones we are already working with in Scotland,” said Pat Jones of Virginia Distillery company in Lovingston.

“We were overwhelmed by how generous and collaborative the Kentucky whiskey industry is. They all know each other, share information and work together to make certain Kentucky bourbon is the best it can be,” Pat added.

We also examined different options for warehousing barrels of whisky. There are several different methods that we wanted to see first hand and learn the pros and cons.
We were trying to learn from mistakes others have made,” Pat continued.

This past Sunday afternoon (10.30.11) friends, former teachers and students at North Branch School planted a tree in remembrance of Earl Miller.
Raven Holland Curtis, a long time friend of Earl Miller, takes a turn digging the hole for a memorial tree planted in his memory at North Branch School this past Sunday afternoon in Afton.
“He was my book buddy. A wonderfully nice person,” one former student of North Branch told us. We continue hearing the same sorts of stories all across the county.
Friends and former students place dirt around the tree remembering Earl Miller a previous student at North Branch School. After the tree was planted, friends took turns speaking in remembrance, and singing a couple of songs in Earl Miller's memory. The newly planted tree is now a permanent marker for future generations and students at North Branch School.

On cue the snow fell the night before. Pretty good timing to signal the official end of the Nelson Farmers Market Coop in Nellysford for the 2011 season. We told you about the 2011 kickoff here. Braving gusty northerly winds and cold temps, workers were busy after this past Saturday’s market taking the tents down until next year. Nelson County Life Magazine is one of several sponsors of the music events held each Saturday at the market.
Braving a cold and windy day, workers prep the tents for storage until 2012.
The market was originally founded back in 1997 and has been going strong ever since!

Some arrived as hippy throwbacks to the 1960’s, others as Robin Hood. And the ones less adventurous showed up in customary business or formal dress. Nonetheless, everyone had a fantastic time at the 2011 Opportunity Ball at Veritas. The events helps to raise money for The Nelson County Community Fund that issues grants to numerous Nelson non-profits. We’ve been covering the annual gala for years.
Alyssa Mische (right) of Nellysford, who showed up at Saturday night's Opportunity Ball as Robin Hood, chats it up at the 2011 event.
The Opportunity Ball was first held in 2004 to raise funds to help address the need for basic medical and dental care, improved housing, childcare and even food for neighbors in Nelson County. All of the funds raised through sponsorships, auctions and donations are used solely to benefit Nelson County through grants from the Nelson County Community Fund.
Auction items continue to be one of the biggest draws at the annual Opportunity Ball. There was a wide cross section of costumes and fun at Saturday night's Opportunity Ball. The Opportunity Ball first began in 2004.
The ball included a 5 course meal paired with the perfect wine from Veritas!
